Dr. Peter Liao is a board-certified General Surgeon who has a special expertise in minimally invasive endoscopic and general surgery. At the University of Maryland, he taught residents in General Surgery, Flexible Endoscopy and Advanced Laparoscopy. At Union Memorial Hospital, he was Director of the Minimally Invasive Bariatric

program, an instructor in General Surgery, and a preceptor to rotating medical students.

Dr. Jane Lingelbach has over a decade of open and minimally invasive vascular surgical experience since completing her surgical training at Harvard. In addition to serving the Baltimore-Washington community as a private practice Vascular Surgeon at the Washington Adventist Hospital since 2002, Dr. Lingelbach has been

with MVP for over five years and is the Director of the Chevy Chase Treatment Center. Her areas of expertise encompass all areas of vascular surgery with nearly a decade of practice in minimally invasive vein care.

Since completing his surgical training at Harvard in 2002, Dr. David Whittaker has served the U.S. Military Medical Corps with distinction, including one year of service on the U.S.S. Theodore Roosevelt. He is currently a Board- Certified General and Vascular Surgeon with a full breadth of experience in traditional open

surgeries and advanced minimally invasive technologies. He has nearly a decade of experience with minimally invasive vein care. As an innovator and thought leader in the field, Dr. Whittaker holds several patents for cutting-edge vascular medical technology.

Since he founded MVP in 2006, Dr. Jonathan Calure has performed more than 20,000 Closure (a.k.a. Venefit) Procedures. As one of the first surgeons in the region to perform the minimally invasive procedure, he is now recognized as a national leader in the technique. His practice, MVP, is regarded as a Center of Excellence for Vein Care

and has trained other doctors both from within the U.S. and internationally. He is Board Certified in Cardiovascular and General Surgery.

Dr. Jon A. Hupp is a board- certified Vascular Surgeon who ran a highly regarded private practice for over 25 years. He completed his Surgical Training and Vascular Fellowship at Harvard’s Massachusetts General Hospital and moved to the Annapolis area in 2002. He has performed thousands of open,

minimally invasive, catheter-based and ultrasound-guided vascular procedures.

Dr. James Laredo is a board- certified General and Vascular Surgeon who is the Director of MVP’s Vascular Lab. He’s one of a few physicians in Maryland, Virginia and DC to be credentialed as both a Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) and Registered Physician in Vascular Interpretation (RPVI). He earned his PhD in Physiology and

MD degree at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

According to Stanford Hospital in California, approximatelyhalf of the U.S. population suffers from vein disease. In the past, painful vein stripping surgery was the “gold standard” for treating patients who were diagnosed.

What Causes Vein Disease?Understanding Superficial Venous Insufficiency.

Superficial venous insufficiency, or venous reflux disease, develops when the valves that keep your blood flowing out of the legs and back to the heart become damaged or diseased. This can cause blood to pool in your legs, leading to symptoms such as pain, swelling, swollen limbs, leg heaviness, fatigue, skin changes, skin ulcers, and varicose veins.

Varicose veins, best known by their distinctive blue/purple color and their bulging appearance on the skin, afflict up to 20% of the adult population.

Meanwhile, small “spider veins”, or telangiectasias, are a form of vein disease, and are often the first sign of venous insufficiency. This circulatory disorder may present itself in many forms from spider veins to ulceration.

Sclerotherapy Treatment A Common Treatment for Small, Super Varicosities.

MVP’s sclerotherapists use an extremely fine needle to inject a sclerosant medication directly into the targeted “spider vein” and its branches. This causes the treated veins to collapse, and has the visual effect

of causing the vein to disappear.

Venefit™ (formerly known as the VNUS® Closure procedure) is an alternative treatment option to traditional vein stripping surgery. This procedure utilizes state-of-the-art technology to treat venous reflux disease in the superficial venous system, often the underlying cause of painful varicose veins.

The Closure procedure is performed on an outpatient basis. Using ultrasound, the physicians position the Closure catheter into the diseased vein through a small opening in the skin. The tiny catheter delivers radiofrequency (RF) energy to the vein wall.
