Burn 729am/87.9fm Denise Baddock

Well, a very busy November throughout the Maniototo has drawn to a close, with plenty of activities and events on the calendar to keep most of us busy and entertained. Firstly what an awesome mural now gracing the east wall of the local pool. All those involved in the designing and painting of it need to be complimented and congratulated. It’s bright, colourful and depicts the Maniototo perfectly.

As seen on the front page, we had another awesome day at Naseby for the 2017 Community Cup Challenge. Our ‘Santa’s Grotto’ in conjunction with the late night shopping in Ranfurly, was well attended by 33 families. Upcoming events to keep in mind the Maniototo Rodeo, Maniototo Garden Tour and Omakau races. After the Christmas break we will hosting the Burn Pool Party on January 13th, check out the details on page 6.

Apologies to our listeners at the beginning of the month for our broadcasting and sound quality dipping and fading in and out. The signal and quality of it was compromised due to the blustery conditions at the time causing several wiley old willows in full leaf close to our transmitter site interrupting the path between the station and site. Maintenance was needed to resolve the issue and hopefully you have all noticed the difference, as, with assistance from the Otago Power Arborists from Palmerston. Two willows have been felled and one trimmed. Sincere thanks and appreciation to Brian and Wendy Kearney for allowing this to happen. An hour

Each member tagged took the scarecrows they had constructed with them, at the end of it the creations certainly looked worse for wear, some missing limbs, stuffing and even a head or two.

Congratulations to  Patearoa /Styx   for taking out this year’s cup challenge with 243 points, second  was  Naseby  (231) and  Kyeburn/Danseys  were came third (228.5).

Unfortunately Waipiata/Kokonga did not field a team this year, and Ranfurly’s team due to illness and work commitments disbanded at the last minute, but a ‘Random’ team was made up on the day and thoroughly enjoyed participating.

Next year is the Wedderburn community’s turn to host it. It will be our eighth and final year of competitions.

Hopefully a date in October is a better choice of time in 2018, as November proved hard for team organisers to get numbers together as a lot of people were away or involved in other activities.

Thanks to all the team members who participated. To Marilyn, Eric and members of the Naseby community who organised the event and assisted on the day, Ewan for his sound equipment and technical expertise and all those who attended.

It was another awesome Burn 729am/87.9fm Maniototo Community Cup!

Visit from the vet

Family and community (Whānau tangata) is one of four core principles of Te Whāriki, our early childhood curriculum. These principles are the foundations for curriculum decision making and guide every aspect of pedagogy and practice of our teaching team. Recognising that the wider world of family and community are an integral foundation for learning during the early childhood years is key to our practice.

At Maniototo Kindergarten, we value and build on the knowledge and experiences that children bring with them to kindergarten. We recognise that children learn and develop best when their culture, knowledge and community are affirmed and when the people in their lives help them to make connections across settings.

Welcoming visiting experts to kindergarten is one of the ways in which we celebrate our connections with the community. We especially welcome input from our kindergarten whānau and families.

Recently Louis’ dad and Blue Cross veterinarian, Michael Lilley (below) brought some x-rays to kindergarten for us to have a look at. One x-ray showed a dog’s leg bone which had been broken and another x-ray showed the same leg after it had been fixed with metal pins. A third x-ray showed a variety of utensils from the vet clinic. Michael also brought along the utensils which the children identified in the x-ray.

Children learn through play: by doing, asking questions, interacting with others, devising theories about how things work and then trying them out and by making purposeful use of resources. As they engage in exploration, they begin to develop attitudes and expectations that will continue to influence their learning throughout life.

COUNTRY CRICKET Philippa Pope

The Stewart McKnight Trophy Game between Otago Country and Dunedin was played on Sunday 26th

November at the Oturehua Domain.

It was good to see plenty of Maniototo (and Oturehua) lads in the Country side – Reuben and James Pyle, Sam Pringle and Sam Blakely. Otago Country have only ever won the trophy once since its inception. This year they scored a good innings total of 260 in 50 overs. Hopes were high over lunch but the thunder and lightning eventually led to a downpour early in Dunedin’s chase and the game had to be abandoned. Players from both sides were glowing in their praise of the wicket. It is greatly admired as a ground by all levels of the cricket fraternity as a venue.

The guests were also glowing in their praise of the lunch – so well done to all those who helped Julie and her team. (Almost $500 was raised for the swimming pool account). Big thanks to Peter Ryan too for giving a lot of his time to getting the irrigation pump operating again, after the winter floods rearranged the creek bed and damaged the pump.

The Primary School year 7 and 8 team have had 3 wins out of 3 on the Oturehua ground this season so far! We are now away for the last 3 games of the pre-Christmas season.

Upcoming Games: Dec 9th Maniototo A 12 noon Dec 16th Maniototo A 12 noon

The domain is looking (and playing) like a million bucks at the moment. Thanks to all those who contribute to grass cutting etc.

There were little ‘extras’ at the contributing businesses such as tailored menus, port and wine tastings, face painting and, of course, Santa’s Grotto run by Burn 729am/87.9fm.

Every purchase made went into the draw for one of two gorgeous hampers created by donations from local businesses to the total value of over $500. Congratulations to Carmel McDonald (purchase made at Maniototo Paint and Hardware) and Suzy de Louw (purchase made at Maniototo Four Square). Congratulations ladies!

The Maniototo Business Group would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Here’s to a busy visitor season for local business!

Hayes Engineering Rebecca Reid

Ingenious, innovative, inspiring

MARVEL at a fully operational turn of the 20th century workshop where millwright and engineer Ernest Hayes invented labour-saving devices for farmers under the slogan ‘durability before cheapness, first cost last cost.’

This enduring family business, E. Hayes and Sons, became famous for their perfected wire strainer design in 1924 but also turned out windmills, standards and gates, rabbit smokers, cattle stops, spinning jennies, wheel clamps and more.

Nine Hayes children were brought up at this site, once known as Echo farm, where a series of fascinating mud brick buildings, gardens and quirky Hayes contraptions are revealed.

Ernest’s wife Hannah, initially pedalled her bike through Central Otago’s desolate landscape in her long skirts to get orders for the business – a tale that stops many of today’s visitors to the Heritage New Zealand cared for property in their tracks.

Come and visit, take a guided tour of the workshop, ‘Big house’ and gardens, re-wire with a Hayes roast coffee, browse the gift shop and taste some delights from Hannah’s Kitchen.

To see the workshop come to life, roll up at one of the following operating days over summer: January 7, February 4, March 4, and April 1, 2018.

Cost $20 per person, children under 15 and Heritage New Zealand members free.

For contact details see advert on page 13.

walkways meet further up the Sowburn at the Gallaway Bridge (approx. 2 kms) and provide the opportunity to easily walk both the east and west sides.

East Side WalkStarts at the ‘top’ bridge and finishes at Dykes Dam (approx. 2.5km). Much of this walk is on what was once an old water race built by the gold miners. Chinese gold miners also lived on this side of the Sowburn and there is evidence of their shelter.

West Side WalkAlso starts at the ‘top’ bridge. It is a slightly steeper gradient but provides magnificent views over the Maniototo Plain. At the Gallaway Bridge, join the East Side Walk to Dykes Dam for wonderful swimming holes.

The weather played its part on the day, with temperatures in the mid twenties, the course was in immaculate condition, the food on offer top notch, some great scoring and loads of fun in the sun had by all. Sadly, no one managed to win the 4 x 4 vehicle on offer for a hole in one on No2.

MANIOTOTO EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT Keep an eye out for a new publication in your letterbox which could save you and your family’s lives.

The Central Otago District Council is a member of the Otago Civil Defence Emergency Management (CDEM) Group which is a consortium of local authorities, emergency services and other key

stakeholders working together to help build resilient communities.

The Council is responsible for delivering emergency management activities within the district that contribute to the joint initiatives of the group. CODC shares an Emergency Management Officer with its neighbouring authority Queenstown Lakes District Council.

A new publication will be sent to households and available at selected outlets which will include evacuation information, zones and routes, assembly points, inundation and flood zones, civil defence centres and tactical site maps. All information is specific to the Maniototo.

Keep this resource in your emergency kit. In times of emergency, the Central Otago District Council will provide as much information to our community and visitors as possible through a variety of channels, including our website  www.codc.govt.nz and on Facebook  www.facebook.com/centralotagodistrictcouncil.  Maniototo’s Burn (729am/87.9fm) radio station is a great way to stay in the loop and to hear the latest local information.

Create your family’s emergency plan and ensure your survival kit is up-to-date so you are prepared no matter what.

Trade You, Trade Me ... Trade It For Always ... That’s The Way It Should Be ...

Mario wanted to swap his automobile for a different one. So he put a message on his Facebook page advertising his interest in swapping his car for someone else’s and eventually chose to trade automobiles with Luigi. Luigi lived in Christchurch and his car (“Knight Rider”) was worth about $3,000, but this did not deter Mario who lived in Cromwell and whose car (“The Delorean”) was worth closer to $8,000. And so the swap was made.

A few days later, Luigi called Mario to advise him that Knight Rider was security for a $10,000 debt that his mum owed to a finance company. Mario’s registering the change of Knight Rider’s ownership had automatically alerted the company, who had in turn issued a letter to Mario’s mum, demanding full and immediate repayment of the loan. Furthermore, under the terms of the loan, the company had the right to seize Knight Rider and if they chose to do so, Marion would have no recourse against the company, Luigi or Luigi’s mum.

Fortunately, Luigi was prepared to reverse the swap and Mario’s parents’ lawyer was able to convince Mario that doing so would be a wise move. Mario got The Delorean back and lived happily ever after.

So here are a few basic rules of thumb to follow when acquiring a second-hand vehicle:

1. Always, always, ALWAYS……get your lawyer to do a thorough PPSR search

2. If the vendor doesn’t provide you with a vehicle’s registration number – BE WARY!!!

3. Make sure the stuff you’re buying actually exists – i.e. go and look at it

4. If you have even the slightest quiver of an inkling of suspicion – RUN AWAY!!!

5. If it sounds too good to be true......IT IS!!!

POLICE UPDATE:It is almost the start of the holiday period and I thought it would be a good time to remind ourselves to be safe out there on the roads and around home.

Alcohol and driving:The start of the holiday period also means the end of the working year for some and, with that, social events like Christmas parties and work functions.

A timely reminder that there should be no reason for you to drive if you think you had too much to drink.

All the licensed premises in the Maniototo area should have a courtesy coach available. If you are not sure whether you have had too much alcohol to drive, be safe and take the courtesy coach home or arrange to be picked up.

It is encouraging to see that most people are starting to realise that it is not OK to drink and then drive, although there are still a few out there who are rolling the dice.

You will eventually get caught!

Seatbelts:It is satisfying to see that most drivers are wearing their seatbelts, although there are still some who think that it is not necessary when driving only a short way. Make them click, no matter how short the journey!!

Speed:Every year during school holiday periods and long weekends, the speed tolerance gets lowered to 4km/h. This will again happen over the coming holiday period. Drive to the speed limit and the conditions and get there safely.

School Buses:In the previous edition of Positively Maniototo there was a small information advertisement relating to speed around school buses. Remember the saying: “It’s 20k either way”.

You have to slow down to 20km/h when passing a stationary school bus dropping off or picking up children. It is not good enough to slow down to 50km/h or even 30km/h.

Suspicious Behaviour:During this time there is also an influx of holiday makers in the Maniototo area. Be vigilant and look out for any suspicious activity or vehicles in the area, especially if you know someone is away.

Stay safe out there and have a great Christmas and New Year.

STAY POSITIVE!Merry Christmas and here’s to a brilliant 2018 from the team at Positively Maniototo. Thank you everyone for your contributions (content, editing, delivery and distribution) over the year. You all rock!

Summer is rapidly approaching – tailing mostly finished and weaning just around the corner. FECRT (faecel egg count reduction tests) are a great tool to ensure that the drench that you are using is working effectively and to help make educated decision.

FLY!! Those green and brown flies are rapidly making their presence known! A fly lifecycle from egg laying until adults who can lay eggs is only 15 days (during winter maggots pupate and burrow into the soil until temperatures increase and the lifecycle can take a lot longer), there are lots of options for control and prevention and it is always better to be organised and prevent a problem.

Remember it is barley grass season – they can be found in feet, noses, eyes, ears and throats and make for very unhappy dogs. Check dog’s feet, between their toes and ears on a regular basis especially after exercise in long grass, and if you have a long haired dog clipping them is a great way to reduce barley grass infections.

Enjoy the coming holiday season, time with family and friends and the warm weather. We are looking forward to seeing you all in the New Year.

RSA news The Maniototo RSA would like to thank members, Ranfurly Hotel proprietors Barry and Leonie, the hotel staff and all those who supported us in providing prizes and buying raffle tickets at our recent fund raising evening at the hotel.

Special thanks must go to Ewan Mason and Heather McKinley, Lorraine Cheyne and Joe and Margaret Lockhart for providing special prizes for a seperate raffle.

Winners were Joe and Margaret Lockhart (Christmas hamper), John McMillan (wool jersey) and Charlie Mulholland (deck chair).

Funds raised are going towards installation of two new flagpoles at the cenotaph. We are humbled by, and grateful, for the support we receive from the Maniototo community and we thank you all very much.

Naseby StoreAfter nearly three years running Naseby Store, it is with mixed feelings that I advise the Store has been sold and will have a new owner as of 15th December.

A huge welcome to Paul Bishop, welcome to the Maniototo, to Naseby community and to Naseby Store.

It was always my plan to run it for two to three years and it will be four days short of three years when Paul takes over. I have loved being a shopkeeper and will definitely miss the daily contact with so many people. My plan is to join Eric in retirement, maybe ……

Paul has exciting plans for the space and I wish him every success in his venture.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many many people who have been great customers over the last three years and urge them to continue to support our precious Naseby Store.

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and wonderful holiday season.

Marilyn Swinbourn

A Word from paulHi, I’m Paul and I’ll be your new Naseby store owner/operator! Originally from England, I have been living in Mosgiel for the last 14 years, working for the Dunedin City Council.

However, the clear, dark skies of Naseby have encouraged me to pursue exciting opportunities in following my passion for astronomy whilst also contributing to a unique community. I anticipate that, by autumn 2018, I will be operating guided night sky tours to the public to showcase the splendour that Naseby’s night sky has to offer … so watch this space!

I’ll be taking over the store on Dec 15th and I look forward to meeting you all soon – please call in for a chat.

CLACHANBURN COMMENT November has been hotter and drier than usual and we are all looking for a decent rain. The heat has brought on the flowering and the roses are in full bloom, earlier than in some years.

Here, in a large garden, we try to stay ahead of the game, and by that I mean to look ahead and say to ourselves, for example, the roses will be flowering soon so we must weed the garden and make sure it is up to the mark before visitors will be walking around that area. Also be observing the roses for white fly, aphids and mildew, so far so good.

Likewise in a large garden it is hard to keep on top of every weed, so I was very interested to hear Fiona Eadie, who is the head gardener at Larnach’s Castle, talk to our local Garden Club last season. She focused on garden maintenance, and was explaining her method of 123, which I had never heard of as such, but here it is – your main garden which for most of us is around the house let’s call it number 1 and weed it, then move to number 2 garden, and then back to number 1, and then progressively move on to another garden but always back to 123. Her point is that if you have say 10 different gardens, and always go from 1 to 10, and nothing in between you will never get on top of all the weeding, but by concentrating on the ones closest to the house, and then moving outwards, and then coming back before moving outwards again that in time you will.

Since her talk we have been following this principle and we think we are achieving what she was talking about. Then by following up the weeding with mulch will help keep the weeds down and keep moisture in the ground too.

Knowledge shared is knowledge gained. Today, a gardening group from Australia visited and gave me their latest newsletter with this sub title, and how true it is. One of the best things about garden visitors is sharing a little knowledge and gaining a whole lot more.

Margot has raised the height of the lawn mower to prevent the grass from burning off, and uses the grass clippings as mulch around the shrubberies, but always keeping the grass away from the tree trunks and plants. She spreads it thinly as she goes.

May I remind you of the Garden Club‘s Open Day on the 28th December and this year it is on the Strath Taieri, in and around Middlemarch, and is always a terrific day out. See page 13 for more details.

Happy Christmas wishes to all readers.

TRAVELLING WRITING DESK Naseby Museum

The Reverend James McCosh-Smith, M.A, B.D. was the first Presbyterian minister in the Mt Ida Parish, remaining there for thirty-six years when old age forced him to retire to Blackstone Hill area. His parish included Styx, Upper Kyeburn, St. Bathans and Oturehua. The Reverand once stated he covered an average of forty miles (70km) every week and had to have a quiet reliable horse as he composed the majority of his sermons while driving. His wife, Jane, accompanied him as often as family duties allowed. Both were highly regarded by all denominations throughout the district and further afield. One of Rev. McCosh-Smith’s passions was astronomy. He was involved with setting up a site, in Naseby, for Lieutenant Crawford of the British Expedition to view the transit of Venus 9th December 1874, unfortunately it was cloudy on the night.

Rev. McCosh-Smith graduated from Aberdeen University and it appears that he was also well regarded there by his friends as they presented him with a travelling writing desk (January 1871) prior to him and Jane leaving for Naseby. Some of their descendants are still in the Maniototo. The writing desk is on display in the museum.
