WelcomeWelcome to Norfolk & Norwich Festival 2018.

The Festival is a wonderful time to celebrate our city and county, to bring communities together to experience great art and performance, and to welcome artists and visitors from across the UK and around the world. I joined the team in January and from the word ‘go’ have been busy meeting partners, supporters, artists and audiences, who have all let me know how much they value the spark of creativity that the Festival brings to Norwich and Norfolk.

Our programme is broad and rich. From world-class classical music, through some of the best British theatre, circus and dance, to participation events for children and young people, there is something for everyone. We’re proud to be presenting world premieres alongside celebrated productions not previously seen in Norfolk. The Festival is a great opportunity to seek out your favourite artists and events but also to take a chance to experience something new.

This year the Festival has been put together by all of our team. My predecessor William Galinsky, Artistic Director of the Festival, laid the foundations with major commissions andpartnerships and the team, along with our principal programming partners Britten Sinfonia, Serious and Writers’ Centre Norwich, has given flesh and life to the programme. I’ve joined as we put the finishing touches in place and I have quickly immersed myself in the excitement and challenge of delivering one of the UK’s most dynamic arts festivals. Norfolk & Norwich Festival is only possible with the continued support of Arts Council England, Norwich City Council and our valued sponsors and funders. Many individuals make contributions as donors, volunteers or board members and we value these contributions highly. In particular, we thank the artists whose

work we share and you, our audience, who the Festival is for and who – through your participation and attendance – trulybring the Festival to life.

Festival JourneysWith so much going on throughout the Festival it can be difficult to decide how to spend your time, so we’ve created some journeys to help you get the most out of our diverse programme. Check out our website in the run up to the Festival to see more featured journeys.

Let’s Dance

We have incredible dance on offer at the Festival this year, from cutting-edge contemporary to a unique take on a traditional South Indian dance form. World-renowned choreographer Hofesh Shechter returns to the Festival with his ‘heart-stopping’ show Grand Finale (p35), which is animated by six musicians live on stage. Gandini Juggling’s stunningnew show Sigma (p36) blends the movements of juggling and classical Indian Dance, with a backdrop of multimedia projections and a striking percussion score. Inclusive dance companies Stopgap (p10) and Flex (10) bring two fantastic free shows to our outdoor spaces. If you feel like having a boogie yourself this May, come along to The Adnams Spiegeltent where you can discover your inner Sevilliana Dancer at the Ragroof Tea Dances (p44), or get down at one of our late night gigs (p47)!

See It First

Don’t miss out on being the first to experience a number of critically acclaimed artists and performers during this year’s Festival. Vibrant and innovative theatre creators, Improbable bring the debut of The Paper Man (p32); a darkly comicexploration of football, fascism and the tenacity of the human spirit. Experimental acrobatic circus company Barely Methodical Troupe return to the Festival this year, and are

New to the Festival?

The best start to anyone’s Festival experience will be the Festival Launch (p7) when giant dolls promenade through the city and the streets will be filled with drummers who end theshow suspended above the crowds on a giant mobile. For another truly uplifting show, head to Norwich Theatre Royal for Ladysmith Black Mambazo (p14), the legendary South African a cappella choir who shot to global fame after featuring on Paul Simon’s Graceland album.

Norwich is a UNESCO City of Literature and this strand of the programme (p45) has everything from time travel and Lego™ cities (p51) to leading tennis coach Judy Murray(p53) and king of crime writing Jeffery Deaver (p55). The Adnams Spiegeltent is iconic, glamourous and heaps of fun, so why not enjoy visiting it with a show that is all of these things– Le Gateau Chocolat’s Icons (p46). And finally, the closing concert of this year’s Festival sees Britten Sinfonia performing one of the most popular and recognisable pieces of classicalmusic, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 (p27).

When Robert Trevino stepped in at short notice in 2013 to conduct a performance at Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre, he became an overnight sensation. Lauded for the colour and detail of his direction, he has since earned a reputation for his revelatory interpretations of Mahler’s symphonies, so this is a chance to hear him at his very best.

The grandeur of Mahler’s Fifth Symphony, with its soaring trajectory from melancholy to elation, is the perfect partner for the emotional candour of Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No .2.

Made famous in the 1945 film Brief Encounter, its sumptuous slow movement is almost impossible to resist.

World Premiere

Created by Vera Chok, Sophia Clist,Colin Grenfell, Steve Harper, Jess Mabel Jones, Anna-Maria Nabiyre, Adrienne Quartly, Lee Simpson and Steve Tiplady

What do we do when fascism comes to town?

In 1938, Austrian football star Matthias Sindelar humiliated theNazi regime by refusing to throw a match. A few months later he was dead. Accident, suicide or execution? Inspirational little guy or yet another man and his ego?

Who cares?

Middle aged, white British, football addict-in-recovery, Lee Simpson wants answers. He hires some women to make a show about football, Nazis, and our future.

In a paper world of light and shadow, violence and dance, four performers work together on what sets them apart.

Founded 21 years ago, Improbable are firmly established as one of the UK’s most innovative and acclaimed theatre companies.

Tuesday 15 May, 7.30pmNorwich Theatre Royal

Choreography and Music by Hofesh ShechterPerformed by Hofesh Shechter CompanySet & Costumes designed by Tom ScuttLighting designed Tom Visser

After the success of Political Mother at NNF15, we welcome back internationally celebrated choreographer Hofesh Shechter with his latest work, Grand Finale, a spectacularly bold piece featuring ten dancers and six musicians.

At once comic, bleak and beautiful, Grand Finale evokes a world full of anarchic energy and violent comedy. Filtering this irrepressible spirit, Shechter creates a vision of a world in freefall: part gig, part dance, part theatre and wholly original.

Marco MartinsProvisional Figures

Friday 25 May (Preview) & Saturday 26 May, 7pmThe Drill House, Great Yarmouth

This exciting new piece of theatre by award-winning Portuguese film and theatre director Marco Martins is inspired by the stories of Portuguese immigrants who began arriving in Great Yarmouth in the mid-2000s. Now, more than 10,000 Portuguese have made Great Yarmouth their home, significantly changing the face of the town.

Relating their personal stories, Provisional Figures gives voice to this community, their motivations for leaving their homeland, their quest for a new identity and the challenges and successes that follow. These deeply human experiences invite audiences to reflect on the profound social changes brought about by the recent arrival of European migrants to the town and explores notions of our British and European identities at this particularly complex time in political history.

Saturday 26 May, 7.30pmNorwich Playhouse

Conceived and devised by the company Director Tim EtchellsDevised with and Performed by Jerry Killick, Richard Lowdon and Claire MarshallCreated with input from Robin Arthur and Cathy Naden

Real Magic creates a world of absurd disconnection, struggle and comical repetition. To the sound of looped applause and canned laughter, three performers take part in an impossible illusion – part mind-reading feat, part cabaret act, part nightmare game show – in which they are thrown back again and again to moments of hope and defeat. A compelling performance about optimism, individual agency and the desire for change.

About UsOur vision is to use the power of the arts to make our part of the world a truly great place to live, work, learn and play.

We have been an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation since April 2012 and are one of 10 Bridge Organisations with a mandate to develop arts and cultural opportunities for children and young people in the East of England.
