Live Life with Love by Dr. Parshottam Poddar What we wanted and never got; what we got, we had never thought What we thought, we never got; what we got we never liked it We keep remembering, what we have lost ; And can’t take care of, what we have got……….why Life is a strange puzzle, which no one can solve If we have to compromise in life, it is not a big deal, because People who do so are those who are alive – “No action” is a sign of dead people There are two ways of living life : A: What you like, go get it B. What you have got, start liking it Living life, isn’t easy – One cannot be great if you never struggled Life teaches us many lessons; makes us smile sometimes and makes us also cry But people, who smile in all situations life kneels down before them Let your smiling face hide all your tears – say it all, nothing withholding and without any fear Never get upset with anyone, always make others smile – this is the secret of life, continue living life A poor man walks miles, to find some food while a rich man walks miles, to digest his food Some people don’t have a one time meal – Some don’t have time to eat their meal Some are handicapped, and hence are ill – Some are ill and hence are handicapped Some give up their bread for their near ones – and some give up their near ones for their bread This world is wonder, just think for a moment There was a time, we used to cry on being bruised & now we manage ourselves, even when we are heart-broken Before we used to live with our friends and now we live in memories of our friends Before , getting angry & making up, used to be every now & then, and now once we get angry, relationships end Life has really taught us so much and god knows unknowingly so big : “Life is short, live it with love” Dr. Poddar is a member f the Apna Sapna Club . He lives in Mumbai and visits USA yearly.

Lord Dhanwantari Puja : God of Medicine

October 22nd, Wednesday, 2014

Program-22nd October: Wednesday 5:30pm ;Puja , Havan ,Arti, Dinner Prasad

Sponsorship- Pramukh Yajaman $251, Abhishek $51, Havan $51 For Details Call Temple: 513-528-3714; Sangita Patel 513-791-0855;Acharya Kailash Sharma 513-652-5382, Acharya

Srinath Bhattar 513-488-2986; Dr.Ganesh Yadlapalli 857-719-1500. Dhanwantari is a form of Vishnu. He is depicted with four hands, holding medical herbs in one hand and a pot containing rejuvenating nectar called

Amrit in another hand. His birthday is celebrated two days prior to Diwali. In Hindu mythology according to Vishnu Purana, the Sage Durvasa had a

special garland. Durvasa wore it on his forehead and wandered around. He came across Lord Indra and offered him the special garland. Indra hung

the garland over his elephant Airavata’s brow. Airavata took the garland and dropped it down on land. Watching this gesture of Indra, Durvasa got

angry and cursed Indra that he would lose all his powers and position. Indra begged for forgiveness but Duravasa refused and went way. Indra and

Devas lost their strength. Seizing the opportunity, the Danavas (enemies of Devas) led by king Bali engaged in war with Devas. Devas were defeated

and lost control of the universe. Lord Indra and other gods fled and took refuge with Brahma. Brahma advised them to seek refuge with Vishnu. Lord Vishnu advised Devas to make

peace with Danavas and jointly churn the sea of milk for the nectar of immortality (Amrit). Danvas agreed to churn the ocean for Amrit, so that they

could also become immortal.

The churning of the ocean of milk was initiated with mount Meru as the churning rod and the king of serpents (Vasuki) as the churning rope. As

advised by Lord Krishna, Devas were at the tail and Danavas were at the head end of Vasuki. The process of churning was started. Once the moun-

tain was placed on the ocean, it began to sink. Lord Vishnu took his second incarnation, the Kurma avatar to support the mountain on His back. The

churning process continued. Halahal (poison) was released and it was consumed by Lord Shiva to protect the universe. And Goddess Parvati pressed

her hand on Shiva's throat to keep the halahal in the neck.

As the process of churning continued, several things came out of the ocean of milk. Lord Dhanwantari appeared with pot containing the Amrit. Then

Goddess Laxmi was born. The Danavas snatched the pot of Amrith and ran away. Then Lord Vishnu took the form of Mohini to distract the Da-

navas. Mohini got hold of the pot of Amrith and distributed it to the Devas. The rejuvenated Devas defeated asuras and regained the control on the

universe. The lord of medicine, Dhanwanthari protected Devas and universes.

Karwa Chauth - Indian Valentine's Day For Married Couples Indian festivals are meant for bonding relationships. Lets explore Indian Valentine's day for married couples. Karwa Chauth is

the festival for maintaining the love and affection between Husband and Wife.

Karwa Chauth = Karwa (Earthen pot, a symbol of peace and prosperity) + Chauth (Fourth) = The festival of Karwa, which falls on the fourth day after the full moon of Kartik month (Oct - Nov). Karwa Chauth appears about 9 days after Dussehra and 11

days before Diwali. Karwa Chauth is a unique one day fasting festival of India. This day Indian married women observe a strict fast before sunrise

and end in the evening sighting moon after performing all rituals. They don't even consume a single drop of water in this dura-tion. Karwa Chauth fast is observed for the long life of the husband.

Karwa Chauth Festival nurtures a strong bond between Husband and Wife. Wife shows her love and care for her hus-band by observing nirjalahaar vrat (No Food and No water). Husband gifts her new clothes, jewelry etc. As per rituals, mother-in-laws gift sargi to their daughter-in-laws (food before observing fast). Married ladies also give Baayna / Baaya (gifts) to their in-laws. Hence, Karwa Chauth festival strengthens the relationship between a mar-ried lady and her in-laws. Women get together and do puja and eat sargi early in the morning and then do puja in late afternoon. They open

the fast after seeing the moon through a sieve.

Wedding Vows : Hindu Weddings A Hindu Marriage is all about rituals and customs. Each ritual has a deep meaning. Any Indian marriage is incomplete without these vows and is deemed complete once they are conducted. The seven vows or the seven steps are of great mythological importance where the couple takes round the holy fire and every single round has its own significance. Let us all know about these seven vows. These seven vows make bride and groom learn to live together with love, duty, honor and devotion forever. These have special significance for the bride and groom for the peace and welfare of the world. Indian marriage is the icon of purity and the interaction of two isolated community and culture. Except some minor differ-ences, Hindu marriage ceremony consists of the same customs.

Indian Hindu wedding vows: 1. Wellness: The couple requests to the almighty to shower blessings in the form of pure and nourishing food with a re-spectful and noble life. Man pledges to provide food and welfare for the family. He takes responsibility of raising liveli-hood. Woman takes charge of maintaining household. 2. Strength: With the second step, Bride and Groom pledge that they will co-operate in every situation and grow mental, physical and spiritual strengths so that they can share their happiness and enjoy life together. Couple promises to stand by each other's side with courage and strength. 3. Prosperity and Intimacy: Couple pledges to stay together and pray to the almighty to bring prosperity in their lives. The couple pleads for wisdom, wellness and wealth in order to live a content and satisfied life. They pledge to remain spiritu-ally committed and the bride assures the groom that by the virtue of true love and devotion she will remain a noble wife. 4. The love: With the fourth step, couple promise to take care of their elders in the family and not to disregard and forget them. The groom thanks his would-be wife for bringing auspiciousness, happiness and sacredness in his life. In return, the bride takes an oath to serve and please her husband in every way possible. Together, they also pledge to take care and respect their elders in the family. Together they pledge to strengthen and maintain the family relationship. 5. Descendants: With the fifth step, bride and groom request to the almighty that they get the best gift of nature in the form of children. They make a promise to be responsible parents and provide the children with fine education and funda-mental values of life. 6. Health and Longevity: With their sixth step together, the bride and the groom pray to divinity for disease free and healthy life for their families and themselves so that they can lead a harmonious and balanced life together. The groom promises that he would fill joy and peace to his wife's life; while the bride provides assurance that she would participate with her husband in all his noble and divine acts. 7. Quality: With the seventh step, couple prays to God that their relationship will be filled with respect, confidence, ma-turity, honesty and understanding. Wife and husband are the two wheels of the life chariot. No one is superior to each other. Have a blessed married life !!!!!!

Tulsi Vivah Legend Contributed by Meena Mehta

Tulsi Vivah is an age –old ritual tradition of Tulsi Devi’s marriage to Lord Vishnu in the form of Shaligram

and specially, to Lord Shri Krishna the eighth Avatar of Lord Vishnu. This holy marriage is the merging and

oneness of the soul and God.

This ceremonial marriage of the holy Tulsi plant is performed on Kartik Shukla Ekadashi- the eleventh lunar

day of the bright fortnight of Kartik month, known as Prabodhini Ekadashi as well as DevPrabodhini Ekadashi.

The wedding day varies from region to region but it is performed until the Kartik Purnima. The Tulsi wedding

day signifies the end of monsoon season which marks the completion of ‘Chaturmaas’ (the four months) and

then it’s the beginning of the Hindu wedding season.

Tulsi means incomparable. She is venerated as a goddess and has received an epithet Vishnupriya, the beloved

of Lord Vishnu. The legend behind Tulsi Vivah and its rites are told in the scriptures such as Padma Puran,

Skanda Puran and more.

According to the scriptures, the holy Tulsi plant was a woman named Vrinda (Brinda) – a synonym of Tulsi.

Vrinda was a beautiful daughter of powerful Asura named Kalnemi. She was married to the demon-king Jalan-

dhar, who due to her piety and staunch devotion to Lord Vishnu, became mighty powerful and invincible. Also

he had Lord Vishnu’s protection as a blessing for Vrinda’s devotion.

Jalandhar was born out of the anger of Lord Shiva and therefore can only be defeated by Lord Shiva. Because

of Lord Vishnu’s protection, Lord Shiva - the destroyer in the Trinity -could not defeat him. So Lord Shiva re-

quested Lord Vishnu - the preserver in the Trinity - to find a solution. Lord Vishnu disguised himself as Jalan-

dhar and tricked Vrinda when Jalandhar was at war with Shiva. Under the circumstances, even though she rec-

ognized Lord Vishnu, she missed her prayers to the Lord and Vrinda lost her chastity.

Jalandhar was no longer protected, he lost his power and was killed by Shiva. Vrinda cursed Vishnu to become

black in color and to be separated from his wife, Lakshmi. The Lord accepted the curse.

The curse was later fulfilled when He was transformed into the black Shaligram stone by the river Gandaki (in

present Nepal) and in His Rama Avatar, was separated from Sitaji, who was kidnapped by the demon-king

Ravana. Vrinda then drowned herself in the ocean, and Lord Vishnu Himself transferred her soul to a plant,

which was henceforth called Tulsi. According to another legend holy Tulsi plant grew from her ashes.

Lord Vishnu blessed her that His worship will be incomplete without Tulsi leaves. Therefore in all Pooja Sama-

gri and in all Bhog Samagri of Lord Vishnu and Shri Krishna Seva a Tulsi leaf is offered into each Samagri.

Otherwise, it is considered that Shri Krishna does not accept the Seva. Shri Krishna spent His childhood and

performed all Bala Leelas in Vrindavan amongst the gardens and gardens of His favorite Tulsi plants.

As per a blessing by Vishnu to marry Vrinda in her next birth, Lord Vishnu, in form of Shaligram and /or

Shri Krishna, married Tulsi Devi on Prabodhini Ekadashi. To commemorate this event, the ceremony of Tulsi

Vivah is performed. Holy Tulsi is the symbol of spiritual purity (sātviktā). Another legend narrates that Laksh-

mi slew the king Jalandhar on this day and remained on earth as the Holy Tulsi Plant.

Shobha Patel : Dialogue from an egoistic stance is tainted from the start So make sure whatever you say comes from your heart Our ego has selfish motive and puts its own interest first EGO tends to twist argument, puts dispute in every word Do self check of your intention, is it positive and pure? To make the crucial conversation meaningful for sure

Do have that dialogue, even it is the hardest thing to do It would improve relationship and in long run benefit you

UNITED WAY AND HINDU SOCIETY OF GREATER CINCINNATI In Greater Cincinnati area most of the companies are in the midst of raising funds for United Way from their employees. Beginning last year, I have been allocating 70% of the money I donate via United Way to organization “Hindu Society of Greater Cincinnati”. (I

am glad this one was added to United Way list of Non-Profit Organizations) . But I have found that awareness about this in our community is not there.. None of my friends or colleagues in office knew that they could do this.

It will be great if you can send this to Temple’s distribution list and encourage them to contribute to “Hindu Society of Greater Cincin-nati” via United Way donations. On an average, folks in my office ( I work for Citigroup, around 100 full time Indian employees. ). Donate $150—$200 to United Way and even if 50-70% of that is allocated to “Hindu Society of Greater Cincinnati” that will help raise substantial amount for the organization. This can be used for Marg Project Donations too. Regards Sushil V. Tundalwar Ph No 513-612-0934

Diwali This is perhaps the most well known of the Indian festivals. It usually

takes place eighteen days after Dussehra. It is colloquially known as the "festival of

lights", for the common practice is to light small oil lamps (called diyas) and place them around

the home, in courtyards, verandahs, and gardens, as well as on roof-tops and outer walls. In ur-

ban areas, especially, candles are substituted for diyas. The celebration of the festival is invaria-

bly accompanied by the exchange of sweets and the explosion of fireworks. As with other Indi-

an festivals, Diwali signifies many different things to people across the country. In north India,

Diwali celebrates Rama's homecoming, that is his return to Ayodhya after the defeat of Ravana

and his coronation as king. In Gujarat and North India, the festival honors Lakshmi, the goddess

of wealth. In Bengal, it is associated with the goddess Kali.

Navratri and Dussehra festival days are meant for making our life

useful, fruitful, purposeful and meaningful. These are celebrated throughout India and where ev-

er Indians reside. in India the spirituality is used as applied spirituality for making the life in

this world heavenly instead of thinking and praying for going to an imaginary heaven outside

this world after death in the name of god. These festivals play a crucial role in our social, spir-

itual, psychological, economical, industrial, commercial life. We could use spirituality as ap-

plied spirituality for achieving the above goals through bringing people from all walks of life

together for economic prosperity, social bondage, development of arts, culture, music, dance,

literary works and rituals, commencement of new industrial ventures, investment, develop-

ments, and so on.
