Sorbitol, Maltitol, XylitolBy 1931, Deutsche Hydrierwerke(DHW) in Rodleben/Germanypatented and initiated the world’s firstproduction of fatty alcohols based onthe evolving technology of catalytic, high pressure hydrogenation.
The experiences of DHW inhydrogenation technology during thenext decades resulted in furtherproduct developments: in 1965, DHWstarted the production of its firstliquid Sorbitol starting from vegetableraw materials. By developing specialreactors using the spray dryingtechnology, DHW launched in theforthcoming years a comprehensiveseries of spray dried Sorbitol.Recently, new polyols such as Maltitoland Xylitol have been added to thesugar alcohols range offering thus abroader product portfolio to ourcustomers and to the market. Allproducts, liquid and spray driedSorbitol, spray dried Xylitol and liquidMaltitol have become indispensableas a sugar substitute in modernnutrition and in diabetic products. They are used in numerous otherapplication fields including qualityfoods, confectioneries, personal care, pharmaceuticals and in someindustrial applications.
In 1991, DHW was incorporated inthe worldwide network of researchand production facilities of ouroleochemical group. With the creationof Ecogreen Oleochemicals in 2001,DHW reinforced its position as aglobal producer and supplier ofunsaturated fatty alcohols, primaryfatty amines, sorbitols and othersugar alcohols as well as of a newrange of speciality fatty esters andethers.
Longtime R&D experience combinedwith additional synergies from globaloleochemistry allows DHW topresent itself as a strong and reliablepartner for industrial cooperation.Starting from vegetable based raw
materials DHW in Rodleben offerstailor-made oleochemical derivativesto be used in the production ofnutritional products, cosmetic andpharmaceutical goods as well asadditives for industrial purposes.
Progress from nature

Sugar alcohols belong to the group ofpolyhydric alcohols and are producedby a catalytic hydrogenation of naturalcarbohydrates. They are naturallypresent in smaller quantities in fruitsas well as in certain kinds ofvegetables.
DHW sugar alcohols comprise the products Sorbitol, Xylitol andMaltitol.
Sorbitol is a hexavalent sugar alcohol and is derived from the catalytic reduction of glucose
Xylitol is produced by catalytic hydrogenation of the pentahydric alcohol xylose
Maltitol is obtained of natural disaccharide maltose after catalytic hydrogenation
DHW offers tailor-made Sorbitols and Xylitol as spray dried products withunique advantages in their usage for a number of applications. Maltitol andSorbitol are available as 70 % aqueous solutions.

By means of the specifically developed spraying technology, unique application benefits can be achieved by the
formation of a specific particle structure.
Properties of Sorbitol, Maltitol and Xylitol
Functional properties
• Sweetening powerXylitol has the same sweeteningpower as sugar. Sorbitol andMaltitol solutions are slightly lesssweet
• Cooling effectSorbitol and Xylitol have – causedby their negative solution heat andtheir good solubility in water – apleasantly sweet and cooling taste.Maltitol is pleasantly sweet only
• CariogenityNon-cariogenic effect whencompared to sugarSorbitol and Maltitol are significantlyslower degraded to acids. Xylitol isnot fermented by most of themicro-organisms in the oral cavity
• DieteticsSorbitol, Maltitol and Xylitol areexcellent dietetics for diabeticsbecause of their insulin-independent processing in thehuman body and their toxicologicalharmlessness
• MetabolismSugar alcohols are metabolized andassimilated partially only. Largequantities reach the large intestine, and are fermented there by theexisting micro-flora. Whenconsuming large quantities (20 gand more), possible side effects likeflatulence or a laxative effect mayoccur
• Caloric valueBecause of their slower absorption, sugar alcohols have a lower caloricvalue. In the EU, 2.4 kcal/g are fixedfor all sugar alcohols
Application advantages
• Excellent compressibility and tablet formation
Sorbitol
- harder tablets under comparable conditions
- comparable tablet hardnesses at lower pressing pressures
- reduced stress on the tabletting machines
- less dust, less cleaning
Xylitol
- direct compression without the addition of binders possible
• Fabrication of tablets can becarried out without additionalgranulating processes
• Improved appearance of thetablets by smoother surfaces and a more uniform colour distribution of coloured products
