CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
According to the concept of management, business
management provides people in the whole world with a
general background to the elements and characteristics of
business. Regardless of the educational goal of a person
be it in accounting, finance, business marketing,
engineering, art etc. There is every certainty that he will
end up in having some close connection with business
therefore, Independent observers may classify such
Institutions. Independently owned business such as patrol
services station, restaurant etc.
Business could be classified into the following industries:
1. Retailing Industries
2. Wholesaling and services Industries
3. Manufacturing and services Industries
1
4. Non project public enterprises.
Most of these Industries do one important thing providing
the needs of the society. The needs of the society have
gone much further than the basic needs of food, clothing
and shelter. Our needs are complex therefore, complex
business Institution are needed to fulfill the needs of the
society. The Individual in the society decides what
enterprise makes effort to fulfill such needs.
Our approach in the study of business course is to
provide an instant into how business is one entity and the
consumers are another entity both needing to work
together to make their ambitions become a reality, any
individual business under Nigerian system has two major
objectives which is services and project. These objectives
apply whether the business is a mammoth organization as
the general motors in America the largest world single
business enterprise providing employment for 728,000 men
and women throughout the world or a small neighborhood
2
grocery store at sure leer Lagos. Every business must
satisfy human wants if it is to continue to exist.
The primary objective of a corporation is service, if
service is given, profit will flow (RALPHC).It is wise for us to
know through this study that the mobile telephone that is
commonly used among business enterprises in Owerri
metropolises is known as global system, for mobile
communication (GSM).
It is on this note that the researcher has the intention
of knowing how business enterprises see the effect of
mobile telephone on these issue and many others hinge
the motive of this study. The researcher has not been
encouraged by the answer of existing Indigenous literature
on these issues. However, he made effort to proceed, if
only Nigerians will believe that the effect of this study will
have tar-reaching and positive impact if accepted and
implemented.
3
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The major problems the researcher wish to identity
and pose to solve in this study are:
1. The bad attitude from people using mobile
telephone
2. Problems created by the introduction of mobile
telephone in the society that is the evaluation of
the positive and negative impact on the part of
business
3. Wrong ways of acquiring mobile telephone
4. Unsatisfied services by the companies rendering
the services.
5. Wrong ways of using mobile telephone by drivers
while driving.
1.3 PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
The major aim of this study was to find out the
impact of mobile telephone in the development of small
4
scale business in Owerri metropolis specifically, the study
attempted to:
1. Examine the concept of mobile telephone
2. Identify the role of mobile telephone in business
development
3. Examine the various wrong ways of acquiring
mobile telephone
4. Identify the merits and demerits of mobile
telephone.
5. Evaluate the impact of mobile telephone in the
development of small scale business in Owerri
metropolises.
1.4 RESEARCH QUESTIONS
For us to find solution to the problems, we will
make use of various research questions.
1. What are the concept of mobile telephone
5
2. What are the roles mobile telephone plays in
business development.
3. What are the various wrong ways of acquiring
mobile telephone?
4. What are the merits and demerits of mobile
telephone
5. How can mobile telephone have impact in the
development of small scale business in Owerri
metropolis?
1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The significance of this work can not be overlooked,
since it emphasis on the impact of mobile telephone in the
development of small scale business. It will enable the
researcher to add his little contribution towards the
consumption of mobile telephone. It will help the public to
know the impact of mobile telephone. It will also help the
reader to be on the better position to say what mobile
telephone is all about.
6
1.6 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
This study is focused on the impact of mobile
telephone in the development of small scale business in
Owerri metropolis. It therefore includes psychological
concepts such as motivation, learning and prejudice
CHAPTER TWO
2.0 REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
This chapter reviews related literature on the impact
of mobile telephone in the development of small scale
business in Owerri metropolis. The researcher reviewed
some textbooks, journals, seminar papers and other write
ups relating to the topic. It is grouped under the following
sub-headings.
1. The concept of mobile telephone
7
2. The role of mobile telephone in business
development
3. The various wrong ways of acquiring mobile
telephone
4. Demerits of mobile telephone
5. The impact of mobile telephone in the
development of small scale business in Owerri
metropolis.
6. Summary of literature reviewed
2.1 THE CONCEPT OF MOBILE TELEPHONE
Presently, communication has become a device for
modern life and for the development of the world (Elippo:
1976:448) Based on this; experts on science and
technology took a great research to make communication
easier for people of the world.
Therefore, mobile telephone is a device used by
government, individual and organization to pass
8
information from one place to the other. It is a wireless
machine that connects people worldwide and makes
communication and life easier for people (Ogunji J. A 2003)
2.2 THE ROLE OF MOBILE TELEPHONE IN BUSINESS
DEVELOPMENT
For one to understand this study there is need for us
to know and be conversant with the role of mobile
telephone. As the researcher earlier stated, mobile
telephone serves as a device for easy communication
(J.R.GIBB). It is of no doubt that one can easily pass
information across the country with a small wireless
machine called mobile telephone. In this aspect, we can
now look at the role of mobile telephone as:
1. It serves as a mechanism for easy communication
9
2. It creates opportunity for people of the world.
3. It serves as a device for individual and business
development.
4. It helps to transact free and fair business.
It is beyond all reasonable doubt that all these points made
above are some roles of mobile telephone. It is
indisputable that the weight of a nation is based on their
ability to provide high technology, especially mobile
telephone.
2.3 THE VARIOUS WRONG WAYS OF ACQUIRING
MOBILE TELEPHONE
Many people acquire mobile telephone through so
many bad ways some who could not afford to buy mobile
telephone go about stealing other peoples money in order
to buy mobile telephone, some even snatch other people’s
mobile telephone from them in order to meet up with
10
others. Many young girls prostitute because of mobile
telephone.
2.4 DEMERITS OF MOBILE TELEPHONE
As mobile telephone has merit, it also has demerits
because anything that has advantage must have
disadvantage (J.Bally) some of the demerits of mobile
telephone includes:
1 It is used as a thing of bragging
2 It is used for evil communication
3 It causes lots of accident for motorist as the drivers
will be driving and at the same time answering
telephone calls
4 The cost of acquiring and maintenance is too high
5 It leads to stealing as everybody will like to have it.
11
2.5 IMPACT OF MOBILE TELEPHONE IN THE
DEVELOPMENT OF SMALL SCALE BUSINESS IN
OWERRI METROPOLIS
Form the beginning of this study, the researcher has
been pointing on mobile telephone which all of us use for
communication. It is obvious that we can not articulate this
study without emphasizing on the impact of mobile
telephone in the development of small scale business in
Owerri metropolis. Since the starting of this very research,
there has been some critical questions, which was outlet in
this study, they include:
1. Does the introduction of mobile telephone affect
the development of business in Owerri
2. Does business enterprise see mobile telephone
as a necessity
3. Does mobile telephone serve as a mechanism for
easy communication in business?
12
All these questions are to be used to know whether
mobile telephones which we are using have a positive or
negative impact in the development of small scale
business. As the researcher has earlier said, the
capability of any organization to be on going concern is
based on their ability to collect and analyze data to a
useful in formation.
Therefore, after the questionnaire has been made, we can
be able to say whether the mobile telephone has negative
or positive impact in business development. One can easily
understand that in Owerri, mobile telephone is seen as a
major means of transacting business. One can easily
transact business outside Owerri with the use of mobile
telephone.
A business organization in Owerri can order for goods
at Lagos through the use of mobile telephone and it will
reach them. As the researcher has earner said, the capacity
of any organization in business development is based on
13
their ability to have a high level of collection of data to
useful information. All these can not be done by face to
face negotiation alone, but can be best and easily done
through the use of mobile telephone.
2.6 SUMMARY OF LITERATURE REVIEWED
Based on the literature reviewed by the researcher, it
was summarized that the use of mobile telephone has
improved business development in Owerri since effective
management is based on the ability of a firm to collect,
process and analyze data to useful information.
14
CHAPTER THREE
3.0 Research Methodology
This chapter deals with the methodology and
procedure of the study it is presented under the following
sub-headings:
1. Design of the study
2. Area of the study
3. Population of the study
4. Sample and sampling technique
5. Instruments used for data collection
6. methods of data collection
7. methods of data analysis
3.1 Design Of The Study
In order to avoid biased and to have a fair
representation of the opinions of the population’s
parameter the researcher used survey design which helps
in getting the opinions of the entire population.
15
3.2 AREA OF THE STUDY
A research is not carried out in space, rather it is
carried and in an identified places. A detailed area or
location to be covered will be stated. This research was
centered on the evaluation of the impact of mobile
telephone in the development of small scale business in
Owerri metropolis. The population spread on this study is
made up of business development in Owerri municipal
council, Owerri West, Owerri North and Nekede Owerri.
The choice of these populations is based on the fact that
the impact group that identified most with the current
development in business through mobile telephone and so
this study would be rather incomplete without their
substantial involvement and contribution.
Since this study is centered on the impact of mobile
telephone in the development of small scale business in
Owerri metropolis, we can not fail to ascertain data from
16
the municipal council of Owerri in order to arrive at a point
of evaluation
3.3 POPULATION OF THE STUDY
The population of this study was made up of the entire
small scale business in Owerri metropolis meanwhile, the
total population of the business enterprises is made up of
four hundred (400) consequently, for the benefit of proper
presentation, validity and reliability, the researcher choose
two hundred and fifty (250) respondents using systematic
sampling technique which is reutilizing or internal sampling
technique.
3.4 SAMPLE AND SAMPLING TECHNIQUE
It is not economical to collect data from the entire
population so; the researcher used random sampling
17
techniques. These techniques will help to make
generalization of the population.
ODOH M.O. 1992; 153 stated that stratified random
sampling technique is the process in which heterogeneous
population is divided into certain sub-groups or strata in the
population for the aim of obtaining a greater degree of
representatives. Hence, decreasing the probable sampling
error in the sample, in proportion to their number in the
population itself.
3.5 INSTRUMENTS USED FOR DATA COLLECTION
The structural questionnaire will be used to elicit the
required information, therefore, the respondents are to be
asked similar question in order. This questionnaire will
embody the following type of questions.
Open- Ended Question: Those requiring the respondents
to construct his own reply.
18
Dichotomous Question: Those regarding the respondent to
choose one of the two possible answers
Multi choice Question: Those in which will suggested
alternative possibilities are exhausted for the respondent to
choose.
Scale response Question: Those requiring the
respondent to tick.
3.6 METHODS OF DATA COLLECTION
From the information gathered, the researcher
engaged on the descriptive design method of sourcing the
relevant data. The purpose of this design is not only a
collection of data purpose, but the discouraging of meaning
in the data collected, so facts and events can be
adequately process, understood and interpreted and for the
result, information for the research made was derived from
the primary and secondary sources. The primary source of
data collected was from the questionnaire while the
19
secondary source is from academic texts, publications,
newspapers, journals, articles etc
3.7 METHODS OF DATA ANALYSIS
Chi-square was used for data analysis. The alternative
hypothesis (Hi) was rejected and the null hypothesis (Ho)
was accepted
20
