FROM OUR PASTOR / DE NUESTRO PÁRROCO
Dear friends,
Along with the rest of our Diocese, we should intensify, as in-dividuals and as a parish, our love of Jesus in the Blessed Sac-rament. During the recent snow days, the Church celebrat-ed the memorial of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, who became a Catholic because she was so moved and impressed by the devotion to the Blessed Sacrament that she witnessed in some of her Catholic friends. Saint Elizabeth, a co-patron of our Diocese wrote this after her conversion, a passage worthy of our attention today:
“There is a mystery, the greatest of all mysteries: not that my adored Lord is in the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar—his word has said it, and what is so simple as to take that word which is truth itself?—but that souls of his own creation, whom he gave his life to save, should remain blind, insensible. He has given the free, the bounteous heavenly gift [so that we] shall approach his true and holy sanctuary, taste the sweetness of his presence, feed on the Bread of Angels. My poor soul is lost in wonder at his forbearing mercy.”
“Jesus then is there. We can go receive him. He is our own. That he is there is as certainly true as that this Bread removes my pain, my cares, and warms, cheers, soothes, contents, and renews my whole being. Merciful God, I do possess you. Kindest, tenderest, dearest friend, every affection of my nature absorbed in you is still active, nay, perfected in their opera-tions through your refining love. Hush my soul, we cannot speak it, tongues of Angels could not express our treasure of peace and contentment in him. Let us always whisper his name of love as the antidote to all the discord that surrounds us. The harmony of heaven begins, while silent from all the world, we again and again repeat it—Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus.” (From the writings of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, as quot-ed in Magnificat magazine, January 2022)
Reflect on these truths. Continue to find more of the love of Jesus, in the Undiscovered Treasure of the Eucharist, in this New Year.
With my prayers,
Fr. Matthew ZuberbuelerPastor
P.S. This week as we focus on the need to rebuild our culture until it is a Culture of Life, please consider what you do to wit-ness for life and to support people in challenging situations. I am sure that mothers in need have come to pray before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament and have found help and support in Him. It should be so that they would also find life-affirming accompaniment to keep and love their child in any one of us as well.
Queridos amigos,
Podemos ir a recibirlo.

During this first year of our 3-year preparation for the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the Diocese of Arlington, Bishop Burbidge asks us to Remember that the Eucharist is the source and summit of the Catholic Life. Don’t let the Real Presence of Our Lord in the Eucharist be the Undiscovered Treasure in your life. In this space, we
will feature excerpts from Eucharistic Miracles by Joan Carroll Cruz.
Eucharistic Miracles:
The Miracle of Lanciano, Italy. In the 8th century, a priest-monk was celebrating Mass in a monastery named for St. Longinus, the Roman centurion who pierced the side of Christ at His crucifixion. The monk was known for his great knowledge of science but had been suffering from recurrent doubts regarding transubstantia-tion. After the words of consecration, the host became flesh and the wine became blood which was divided into five pellets. Although the miracle was certified early on, a scientific study in 1970 concluded that the flesh was human heart tissue of the same blood type (AB) as the blood sample. These relics can still be venerated today in the Church of St. Francis in Lanciano.
