Saying Farewell to Carolyn Cernea
On June 21, 2019 Carolyn Cernea was met by her numerous cats at the rainbow bridge. She was greeted and ushered in as a hero. Her love of animals, especially cats, took most of her waking hours. CC took excellent care of her “PetSmart Rejects” (meaning they didn’t get adopted because they were too afraid). Carolyn was President of the Orange County Humane Society at one time. More recently she was Correspondence Secretary and a very active member of Cause 4 Paws. She participated in fundraisers, selling raffle tickets, collecting prizes at local businesses and whatever else she could do to help cats. We remember when she went all over downtown Fredericksburg at the Heritage Festival with a sandwich board, selling Raffle tickets. Whenever there was a Cause 4 Paws event, CC was there.
CC would always greet everyone she met with her great big smile and a formal greeting. If she was calling you on the phone the greeting was something like this. “Is this the remarkable, beautiful Mrs. Miller, who I am speaking to?” After all she was an English Major in College and it showed throughout her life. If she was writing a newsletter or naming a cat, CC had a special flare for words. Some of her cats were named: “Millard Fillmore”, “General Zachery Taylor”, “Silky”& “Moonbeam” and several other US Presidents. She enjoyed Poetry and wanted it published where people would read it to enrich their lives. All of her correspondence was in longhand, using snail mail. (She really didn’t like email.) She did wonderful things for people. She was always leaving surprises, like flowers and pumpkins in the fall by the driveway, or potted pansies in the spring by the front door, or sometimes a bag of cat food would just show up and it was CC who had stopped by. She had dinner parties and Easter Teas, making sure to use fine china and lots of flowers. She loved taking people out to eat at restaurants. Sometime she would order and eat her dessert first!
Her long-time friend, Vickie, sent us a letter recounting what an influence Carolyn had in her life. Once CC took Vickie to lunch at Pinkadilly Tea, Smythe’s Cottage. Vickie loved the lunch so much she enrolled in culinary school and became a professional cook!
CC touched and changed so many lives in different ways. She will be missed by both people and furry friends of this world. She was a wonderful person who always signed her letters so cute. “Love CC and 14 unemployed cats”

Happy Tails
Fuji is my husband Johan’s shadow. She is always interested in what he is doing and begging him to play. She is a very easy going cat and tolerates the silly hats we sometimes dress her in!
She’s so Cute!
Priscilla is doing wonderfully! She has such a sweet temperament and loves
playing with her little mouse toys around the house. She is very cuddly and HAS to be on my husband’s lap when he works
on the computer!

More Happy Tails!
This smush faced picture of Pickles is my favorite. We had the window open and she wedged her head
between the glass and screen. She wasn’t stuck, she just looked
ridiculous!
This is Micah. He loves to cuddle and is definitely a lap cat.
We are having our busiest kitten season EVER!!! Thank you SO very much for your support!

WHY CATS CRAVE, LIKE AND NEED MEAT
Unlike dogs and other omnivores, cats are true (so-called “obligate”) carnivores: They meet their nutritional needs by consuming other animals and have a higher protein requirement than many other mammals. Cats get certain key nutrients from meat—including taurine, arachidonic acid, vitamin A and vitamin B12—that can’t be sufficiently obtained from plant-based foods. Without a steady supply of these nutrients, cats can suffer from liver and heart problems, not to mention skin irritation and hearing loss.
As such, a cat’s ideal diet is made up mainly of protein and fats derived from small prey such as rodents, birds and small reptiles and amphibians. Some cats munch on grass or other plants, but most biologists agree that such roughage serves only as a digestive aid and provides limited if any nutritional value.
Of course, providing your domestic cat with a steady stream of its preferred prey is hardly convenient or humane—and cats can wreak havoc on local wildlife populations if left to forage on their own. So we fill them up on dry “kibble,” which combines animal products with vegetable-based starches, and meat-based canned “wet” foods, many containing parts of animals cats would likely never encounter, much less hunt and kill, in a purely natural situation. Most cats adapt to such diets, but it is far from ideal nutritionally.
Veterinarian Marla McGeorge, a cat specialist at Portland, Oregon’s Best Friends Veterinary Medical Center, argues that the problem with forcing your cat to be vegetarian or vegan is that such diets fail to provide the amino acids needed for proper feline health and are too high in carbohydrates that felines have not evolved to be able to process. As to those powder-based supplements intended to bridge the nutritional gap, McGeorge says that such formulations may not be as easily absorbed by cats’ bodies as the real thing.
Some would vehemently disagree. Evolution Diet, makers of completely vegetarian foods for cats, dogs and ferrets, says that its meatless offerings, on the market for 15 years, are healthy and nutritious, and, if anything, have extended the lives of many a feline and canine, even reversed chronic health problems. Claiming that most mainstream pet foods contain artery-clogging animal fat, diseased tissue, steroid growth hormones and antibiotics no less harmful to pets than to humans, its website posts testimonials from loyal customers who claim happy and long-lasting pets who look forward to their meals. ….Scientific American
The risk of feeding cats a vegetarian or vegan diet include inadequate total protein intake, imbalance of amino acids such as taurine or essential fatty acids and deficiency in vitamin and minerals. These dietary problems can lead to serious and sometimes irreversible medical conditions, according to Jennifer Larson DVM, PhD, board certified veterinary nutritionist and professor of clinical nutrition at the University of California, Davis Veterinary School. The Fool Who
Wants a Cat
(J. Luke Migliacci)
It wasn't very long ago,
Just about a year or so,
When I convinced my
husband that
He'd hardly notice one
small cat.
He made his position
very clear
"She's your
responsibility, dear.
This kitten's yours,
remember that.
I'm not the fool who
wants a cat."
She’s mine to care for
and to feed; I see to her
every need.
.
But when it's time for
love and a pat,
She immediately
becomes his cat.
He loves "my cat" and
it's plain to see
That she loves him as
much as me.
At any designated time
You'll find her in his lap
not mine.
I suppose I could
remind him that
He's not the fool who
wants a cat.
But in fact it pleases
me,
Because love is better
shared by three.
