CLIMATE CHANGE
Why businesses need and want to respond
to climate change?
Is there a competitive advantage or otheropportunity in being proactive? Any
examples of such companies?

GWP = GLOBAL WARMING POTENTIAL
GWP is a relative measure of how much
heata greenhouse gas traps in the
atmosphere. It comparesthe amount ofheat trapped by a certain mass of the gas
in question to the amount of heat trapped
by a similar mass of carbon dioxide, CO2.

GREENHOUSE GAS PROTOCOL
It is an internationally accepted accountingmethod for measuring and reporting greenhouse
gas emissions
Used by companies, governments and non-
governmental organizations Tracking of the six main greenhouse gases

CALCULATING GHG EMISSIONS
(activity data) x (emission factor) = GHG emissions
Activi ty data e.g. kWh for electr icity, km/miles for
transportation, m2 for space, fuel type and amount like
liters/gallons),
Emission factors converting activity data from a businessinto GHG emission values (usually in kg or ton of CO 2
equivalent)
Long-haul air travel GHG emission produced by one
passenger travelling 1000 km by airplane would be:
1000 km x 0.11 kg CO2/km = 0.11 tons CO2

CARBON FOOTPRINT
A carbon footprintis a measure of the impact our
activities have on the environment, and in particular
climate change.
It relates to the amount of greenhouse gases produced in
our day-to-day lives through burning fossil fuels for
electricity, heating and transportation etc.
The carbon footprint is a measurement of all greenhouse
gases we individually produce and has units of tonnes (or
kg) of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO 2).

How to reduce GHG emissons?
Discuss in small groups (5 people) and useinternet with ipads for 15 minutes and try to find
practical examples of ways how companies have
reduced their GHG emissions in different
businesses.
Think about energy use, transportation,
renewable energy sources, operational
efficiency, material inputs, upstream GHG
reductions from suppliers and contractors and
downstream reductions (e.g. from customers) Present your example to the others
