From the Principal… Winter has definitely found our little town of Bendemeer! It is
fantastic to see our students wearing school jumpers and jackets
to stay warm. Please ensure all clothing is named as we have had
some stray jumpers and jackets left at school.
Reports were sent home on Monday 24 June along with a Parent/
Teacher interview note. Please take the time to read your child’s
report as well as book a time to have a discussion with your
child’s teacher about their educational journey.
Over the past few weeks we have farewelled and thanked Mrs
Urquhart for her time with us. Mrs Urquhart is in the middle of a
different kind of educational journey as she learns about how to
be an effective classroom teacher. She definitely walked away
with a number of strategies for dealing with the multi-stage
classroom. Mrs Urquhart enjoyed her time with us and we wish
her all the very best in her journey to becoming a qualified
teacher.
Mr Cavanagh, Director Educational Leadership, popped his head
in last week for a visit. He sat in on the 3–6 class during the
morning session and fascinated the students with a few tricks. Mr
Cavanagh took some time to talk with Mr Goodall and Mrs Swain
about how our school is operating and then enjoyed a delicious
wrap from the Pioneer General Store (Thank you Tiarni!). He read
some newsletter articles the students were working on and then
taught them a song while playing his guitar.
Thank you Mr Cavanagh for your visit; we look forward to seeing
you again in Term 3.
Recently I spent a day visiting Manilla Central School at our Term
2 Primary Principal’s Association meeting. Each of these days
provides me with the opportunity to network with colleagues,
update my knowledge on recent events and changes within the
department and have a sneak peek at other schools to see if I can
adopt any ideas for our school.
Thank you to Steph and Mick Bridge for their help in organising

and delivering our new cubby house. As you all may know, the
students and some of our community members collected cans
and bottles throughout 2018 to fundraise for the cubby. We also
received a donation from New England Credit Union and our
P&C to support the purchase. Although it has been a long
process we can now confirm the cubby has arrived! We will be
running a design competition through school as the cubby
needs to be painted. If you anyone interested in submitting a
design please contact the school for a sheet. Entries Close
Friday 26 July 2019.
As the term winds down to an end we still have two major
events – our NAIDOC Day on July 4th and our Athletics Carnival
on July 5th. If you require additional information about either of
these events please contact the school on 6769 6532.
With the term nearly over I ask all parents to ensure their
children get plenty of rest over the holiday period. Stay safe and
healthy. School will return Tuesday 23 July for Term 3.
Happy reading,
Krystal Magann

National Tree Day
Students will walk from school to the river bank on
Friday 26 July to participate in Schools National
Tree Day.
Tamworth Regional Council have been kind
enough to donate 60 drought tolerant plants that
students and community members will plant along
the riverbank to assist with the rehabilitation
program.
All parents and community members are invited to
join us and assist on the day.
Visiting our school?
Please report to the office.
The gate into the playground
is for student entry.
Parents and visitors are
asked to enter via the bottom
gate and sign in
at the office.
New Cubby Delivered!
The long awaited cubby house that students have
fundraised for has finally arrived.
Thank you to Mick and Steph Bridge for their assistance
with sourcing the cubby, and with its installation.
Attendance Concerns
Bendemeer Public School is currently focusing on
increasing our student attendance rates. Students who
have exemplary attendance receive awards at our end of
term assemblies.
A Home School Liaison Officer has recently noted that
there are a number of students who currently have a
concerning attendance rate.
It is important that students attend school each day
possible and arrive by 9am. Students who arrive after
9am need to be signed in by a parent on a green late slip
at the office window.
We realise that from time to time, students will need to
be absent from school due to illness or other
unforeseeable reasons, however it is important to
contact the school via phone; or note on return.
If you know in advance of any reasons your child may
need to be absent from school, please inform the teacher
or Administration staff by phone or a note.
Parents and Friends are invited to attend our Term 2
Awards assembly this Thursday 4 July at 2:30pm.
Class achievements will be awarded, Library
consistent borrowers will receive an award and
special prize, and we will celebrate students who
have had exemplary attendance rates since the start
of the year.

The 2019 CWA Country of Study is Papua New
Guinea (PNG). During Geography lessons students
have learned about Australia and our closest
neighbour Papua New Guinea.
As a take home project, over a five week period,
students were asked to research a variety of aspects
of PNG and prepare a presentation to present to the
class. These were marked by Mrs Urquhart and
presented with confidence during week 7.
Students will now work with Mrs Magann to
compile a presentation for the CWA Country of
Study day in early September.
On Thursday 6 June 2019 I went to a girls soccer gala day in Tamworth at Gibbs Street Sporting Fields. When I got there, I found my coach Mr Gadd and he showed me where to go and to get ready. Then I met my team mates and we began to practise kicking the soccer ball to each other for a warm up.
After that, we got into playing our games of soccer. We played games against different teams and it went until 2 o’clock in the afternoon.
After all the games, I was so tired and I was glad to be finished.
By Abby Mahlenhoff, Year 4
On Thursday 20 June,
students braved a frosty
start to a glorious morning
along the McDonald River,
all in the name of science.
As a part of their science
unit on living and non-living
things, students scooped,
sieved and sorted
specimens into containers
to count and tally living
creatures found in the local
waterway.
Freshwater shrimp, guppies
and yabbies were some of
the creatures found.
Students drew, labelled and
completed their studies
back in the classroom.

Abby Mahlenhoff recently
competed in a North West
girls Schools Soccer Gala
Day in Tamworth.
Abby joined a team made
up of girls from small
schools across our region
and coached by Mr Stephen
Gadd, Principal of Nundle
Public School. Below is
Abby’s recount of her day.
When Bendemeer Public School ‘did it for the farmers’ they did a lot more than just raise money.
On 13 June, the school’s 16 students – and the 11 families they are drawn from – joined with the local community to raise donations for Tamworth’s ‘Doing it for the Farmers’ and celebrate rural life.
One of the day’s highlights was a question and answer session with students quizzing Country Women’s Association members about life on the farm
Principal Krystal Magann said it was an opportunity for students to learn about the challenges their community, about 40 kilometres north of Tamworth, was facing. “It was really important to talk about how this drought is impacting people, and understand how they got through previous droughts,” Mrs Magann said.
Rural life was at the centre of the day of activities, with students building scarecrows and decorating and planting herb pots.
In keeping with the theme of the day, the students and staff raised more than $200 for RuralAid and six bags of grocery items for distribution through ‘Doing it for Farmers’.
The school organised for Centacare New England to be part of the day so locals affected by the drought could chat about how they were feeling in a casual informal way.
The farmers’ day reinforced the generosity of the students, families and staff of the small school. This year they had already raised almost $460 for cancer research by hosting a Greatest Shave/Crazy Hair Day.

The excitement continued long after the day had
finished, with the news of our efforts and fun day
spreading fast. Our story was featured on the NSW
Department of Education’s website and social media
pages with great engagement, and Tamworth’s Northern
Daily Leader also featured our story on Saturday 15 June.
