Step I Learning about school life in the UK
Look at the four pictures about the lives of British high school on Page1 and describe them in pairs.
![Page 15: 1. Welcome to the unit 2. Reading 3. Language points 4. Word power 5. Grammar and usage 6. Task 7. Project](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062511/551492ec550346b2598b53ee/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)

We can see huge campus and low buildings in this picture. This is the biggest difference from schools in China.
There are rows of lockers by the classroom for students to put their books and other belongings.
![Page 18: 1. Welcome to the unit 2. Reading 3. Language points 4. Word power 5. Grammar and usage 6. Task 7. Project](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062511/551492ec550346b2598b53ee/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Fewer students in a larger classroom sit in two lines and face to face, eager to answer questions.
When classes are over in the afternoon, students in the UK take part in different outdoor activities, which makes their school life more interesting.
![Page 19: 1. Welcome to the unit 2. Reading 3. Language points 4. Word power 5. Grammar and usage 6. Task 7. Project](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062511/551492ec550346b2598b53ee/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Step II Comparison

In the UK In China
Huge campus & low buildings
Lockers for every student
Small class sizes
A lot of outdoor activities
Most schools in China do not have such equipment.
40-60 students sit in several lines facing the blackboard, not very active.
We have large campuses but taller buildings, at least three storeys.
Some schools provide chances for students and encourage them to do outdoor activities; some schools burden students with too much homework, making students have no time to go out.
![Page 23: 1. Welcome to the unit 2. Reading 3. Language points 4. Word power 5. Grammar and usage 6. Task 7. Project](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062511/551492ec550346b2598b53ee/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
Step III Writing
Work in groups of four.
Each student chooses one aspect.
Write a short passage comparing schools in China and the UK from the chosen aspect.
Present in a group.
![Page 24: 1. Welcome to the unit 2. Reading 3. Language points 4. Word power 5. Grammar and usage 6. Task 7. Project](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062511/551492ec550346b2598b53ee/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
We can see huge campus and low buildings in this picture. This is the biggest difference from schools in China. Schools in China usually have a large enough campus to make sure students have enough space to study and play in. But most school buildings are taller, at least four storeys.
![Page 25: 1. Welcome to the unit 2. Reading 3. Language points 4. Word power 5. Grammar and usage 6. Task 7. Project](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062511/551492ec550346b2598b53ee/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
There are rows of lockers by the classroom for students to put their books and other belongings while in China students bring what they need for lessons to school and then take something necessary back home after school. Most schools do not have the equipment in the classroom.
![Page 26: 1. Welcome to the unit 2. Reading 3. Language points 4. Word power 5. Grammar and usage 6. Task 7. Project](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062511/551492ec550346b2598b53ee/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
There are fewer students in a class in the UK, no more than 30 per class. There are usually more students in our country, perhaps 50 to 60 per class. Some schools are beginning to limit the number of students in each class.
![Page 27: 1. Welcome to the unit 2. Reading 3. Language points 4. Word power 5. Grammar and usage 6. Task 7. Project](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062511/551492ec550346b2598b53ee/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
When classes are over in the afternoon, students in the UK take part in different outdoor activities, which makes their school life more interesting. It is similar in some urban schools in China. Schools there lay emphasis on students’ overall development. However, in some schools, students are burdened with too much homework. They have no time to relax after a whole day study in the classroom.
![Page 28: 1. Welcome to the unit 2. Reading 3. Language points 4. Word power 5. Grammar and usage 6. Task 7. Project](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062511/551492ec550346b2598b53ee/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)

In the UK, it is rare to see tall buildings on UK
school campuses, while in China the buildings are
quite tall. In the UK, there are lockers for
students’ belongings but in our classroom there
are not. In the UK students are active and eager to
answer the teacher’s questions. In most cases,
teachers treat students as their equals. In China,
however, it’s difficult to do so because of the large
number of students. Chinese students have to
study for lots of exams, making them have no free
time to

develop their interests in different areas. British
students are lucky, as they have more free time to
develop their potential and communicate with their
peers.
In a word, students and teachers in both countries
have established a good relationship with each
other. Therefore, students feel comfortable with
their teachers both in and out of class.
