WHAT MAKES A DAD
GOD TOOK THE STRENGTH OF A MOUNTAIN, THE MAJESTY OF A TREE,
THE WARMTH OF A SUMMER SUN, THE CALM OF A QUIET SEA,
THE GENEROUS SOUL OF NATURE, THE COMFORTING ARM OF NIGHT,
THE WISDOM OF THE AGES, THE POWER OF THE EAGLE’S FLIGHT,
THE JOY OF A MORNING IN SPRING,
THE FAITH OF A MUSTARD SEED, THE PATIENCE OF ETERNITY,
THE DEPTH OF A FAMILY NEED,
THEN GOD COMBINED THESE QUALITIES WHEN THERE WAS NOTHING MORE TO ADD,
HE KNEW HIS MASTERPIECE WAS COMPLETE, AND SO HE CALLED IT…

June 21, 2020 – Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson
It came to us as quietly as a cat’s paws on carpet, and minus any warning. They called it “Corona,” and later more technically as “Covid 19.” Either way, we just called it “the virus.” It truly is “an invisible enemy,” both to our bodies and minds. Chief among our latter reactions has been fear. Despite our so-called “victories” through mitigation and masks, that fear lingers in many minds this summer. That is because of what it could do to ourselves and those we love.
In that light, I ask you, could there be any more appropriate Gospel passage than the one we read and hear this weekend? True, there is a difference in time and meaning between the original setting and now. Our Lord wanted to take the fear out of the Apostles’ hearts as they faced their brand new task of preaching. That job would be very frightening for most people, but especially for uneducated fishermen who never had to do it. They knew that the very message Our Lord wanted them to convey might involve their own deaths if the listeners concluded it was blasphemous. They remembered that charge once being brought against their Master, who excelled at preaching.
Switch to the here and now, twenty plus centuries later, when Jesus addresses you and me as potential victims of this insidious virus. He tells us what to really fear: those who can kill the soul. We hear Him stress the point with a memorable figure: “So, with a Father who has the hairs of your head counted, do not be afraid!” (Emphasis added.)
Along with the comfort the Lord’s words bring comes a serious caution worth remembering. “Whoever denies Me before others, I will deny before My heavenly Father.” How would we ever deny Jesus in our ordinary lives? Consider the Catholic in a cocktail party conversation with a party goer who puts him/her on the spot with a question about abortion, and the weak Catholic answers, ”Well I’m personally against it, but I wouldn’t urge anyone to rethink their opinion.” In a very real way, that’s denying Christ. The same holds for the many other “hot button” issues where we know the Church takes an unpopular stance.
I take Our Lord’s words about denying someone “before My heavenly Father” as something that will happen on Judgment Day. That obviously outranks a virus on my fear index. Yes, covid has brought changes to our lives that we might not like. Testing can be trying. Masks may be maddening. But we have a powerful and loving God who is, in the confidence of Jeremiah whose words we hear today: “The Lord is with me like a mighty champion.” To that we can add a supportive quotation “There is no need to nervously pace the deck of the ship of life when the Great Pilot is at the wheel.” With such conviction our fear scurries away as quietly and quickly as the virus arrived. Good riddance to both.
Reading I: Jeremiah 20: 10-13 In the midst of the prophet’s gloomy mood, there comes this passage, expressing his deep confidence in the Lord’s strength and protection. He is “like a mighty champion.”
Reading II: Romans 5: 12-15 Adam, one man, brought sin into the world. Jesus, one new man, brought God’s grace into the world. By Him, all people can be saved.
The Gospel: Matthew 10: 26-33 This passage, part of Christ’s “Mission Discourse,” speaks of appropriate versus inappropriate fear. In their somewhat frightening new task of preaching, the Twelve listen as Jesus allays their fears. He tells them to “fear no one.” even those who might kill you in body but not the soul.” 09-033
