Feathertop
Yet again this has been a challenging yet very rewarding excursion for students at KTHS. The walk itself was arduous and made more so by the soar-
ing temperatures. You may remember I kicked it off by talking about the snow they had before the hike; what a change a week makes! Talking to staff,
students and parents this has been one of those activities that they will remember for life. Walking for 7 days up and down hills carrying a 30 kilogram
pack helps everybody to bond because you are all in it together. I have to admit I was nervous about them going given the fire conditions and
increasing hot weather but you cannot fault the professionalism of the staff who attended. Due to the conditions, preparations and route changes were
made. Tess Demaria was in constant contact with the Rangers letting them know where they were in case they had to get out and obtaining weather
and danger updates. The weather conditions were being constantly assessed and accounted for in the days walking with allowances for access to
driving tracks.
An awesome experience well done to everyone involved.
Cambodia
Last week Jessie Rose McDonald returned from Cambodia. This was a life changing experience where students
from Kerang and Cohuna participated in a cultural immersion program in Cambodia visiting orphanages, helping
build houses and handing out family packs. While away it gives you an appreciation of just how good we have it
in Australia. I take my hat off to Jessie for having the courage to do it as the only representative from KTHS and
would encourage as many Year 12’s next year to get on board.
Speech Night
Congratulations to all involved with our Speech Night, students, parents and staff. What a great way to
acknowledge the achievements of all students at KTHS. A special mention to Jessie Rose McDonald our DUX,
and all the Special Award recipients on the night. This year we added a new category which was 100%
attendance and I am pleased to say four students had 100% attendance. Let’s see if we can double it for 2020.
Nights like this do not just happen and I would like to acknowledge the tireless work of all staff to put the night together.
Mobile Phones Reminder
One of the big changes for 2020 is the Directive by the Minister of Education to ban mobile phones at all state schools. He has made this determination
because of the disruptions to learning and cyber bullying. At KTHS students will be required to turn their phone off and place it in their locked lockers
where it will remain for the whole day. As the phone cannot be used at school we would prefer that the phone stay at home. At KTHS we look forward
to working with students and parents to make this directive happen.
For any student who would like to set up their lockers prior to school the school will be open 2:00pm to 3:30pm Tuesday 28th of January
First day back for students is Wednesday 29th January.
Have a safe and Merry Christmas.

Kerang Technical High School Mobile Phone Policy
Rationale for Staff, Parents or Guardians, and Students
To explain to our school community the Department’s and Kerang Technical High School’s policy requirements and expectations relating to students using mobile phones and other personal mobile devices during school hours.
SCOPE
This policy applies to:
All students at Kerang Technical High School and, Students’ personal mobile phones and other personal mobile
devices brought onto school premises during school hours, including recess and lunchtime.
DEFINITIONS
A mobile phone is a telephone with access to a cellular (telecommunication) system, with or without a physical connection to a network. : For the purpose of this policy, “mobile phone” refers to mobile phones and any device that may connect to or have a similar functionality to a mobile phone such as smart watches.
Kerang Technical High School understands that students may bring a mobile phone to school, particularly if they are travelling independently to and from school or to extra-curricular activities.
Mobile phones must not be used whilst on school grounds.
Mobile phones must be switched off, and locked securely in
the student’s locker during these times.
The invitation to use any Electronic devices in class is up to the discretion of the teacher of that class and should be documented.
All contact between families and students should be directed through the main office.
The policy also applies to the use of electronic devices by students
during school excursions, camps and extra-curricular
activities. It is up to the discretion of the Principal in
consultation with the trip coordinator whether devices are to
be taken.
The use of headphones is not permitted in class unless under the
instruction of a teacher when being used for educational
purposes.
Where a student has been granted an exemption by the Principal, the student must use their mobile phone for the purpose for which the exception was granted, and in a safe, ethical and responsible manner.
There will be more information to come.

2019 Speech Night Presenta-
On Wednesday evening Staff, Students,
Parents and School Council Members filled
Thornely Hall to present our 2019 Achievement
Awards, VET and VCE Awards. The 2019 Year 12
Group attended their final evening as students,
with our Dux Jessie-Rose McDonald accepting
the accolade and delivering a thank you speech
to the staff that supported their school journey
and fellow students.
The holidays are coming,
so it’s a good time to think about getting safely to and from your holiday destinations.
Prepare your car – by having it serviced, check tyres, brakes, and lights. And pack some emergency
gear, such as a torch, blanket, water and a First Aid Kit, just in case.
Get a Good Night’s Sleep before you travel and don’t leave packing to the last minute.
Plan for your trip so you will have regular breaks and someone to share the driving.
If you drink any alcohol or are drug affected, please don’t drive, give the car keys to a driver who
isn't affected.
Keep the kids busy with games, colouring in or movies and have them properly restrained.
If you're travelling with pets, make sure they are restrained.
If you are towing a trailer or caravan, do a tow, light and brake check.
Don’t get Distracted when you are driving – no phone use. As the driver, you are responsible for eve-
ryone’s safety in the car.
Driver fatigue – Listen to your body – Don't leave too early in the morning because your body clock be-
lieves you should still be asleep. If you are yawning, rubbing your eyes, restless, or drowsy, it could be symp-
toms of fatigue – it’s time to pull over and have a break. Have a 15 minute rest every 2 hours.
On a long trip, especially in holiday season, there are Driver Revivor Stops which provide a tea or coffee, so
please make sure you take advantage of them during your trip.
If you are feeling tired, yawning, pull over and have a break. Micro-sleeps can kill.
Cheers Meg

DROUGHT COMMUNITY SUPPORT INITIATIVE (DCSI) IS NOW OPEN FOR APPLICATIONS
INFORMATION FOR MEMBERS, STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS
The Australian Government have awarded the St Vincent de Paul Society National Council of Australia and The
Salvation Army $15 million each in drought relief funding under the Drought Community Support Initiative -
Round 2 (DCSI). The project ends on 30 June 2020.
The Government have identified eligible Local Government Areas (LGAs) across New South Wales,
Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and Victoria. These have been divided between the Society and The
Salvation Army so that there will only be one provider in each LGA. A list of LGAs by provider is attached for
your reference. The eligible LGAs have been specified by the Australian Government, based on information
provided by the Bureau of Meteorology.
Eligible applicants to the DCSI can receive a one-off cash payment of $3,000 into their bank account. To be
eligible, an applicant must:
Derive their primary income from being a farmer, farm worker or farm supplier/contractor
Live or work in an eligible LGA
Be experiencing hardship as a result of the drought
Be over 18 years of age
Be an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident.
The National Council have established a Drought Response Team (DRT) in the National Secretariat office in
Canberra to distribute the assistance.
We are now asking Members, staff and volunteers to help us get the word out to potential applicants. Please
let farming community members know about the assistance and ask them to apply by going to our online
application form, which can be found at www.vinnies.org.au/droughthelp. The application form is easy to
complete and should take approximately 10 – 15 minutes using a computer, tablet or mobile phone. Applicants
will receive a confirmation email telling them when they can expect to receive payment. We also invite farming
community members to call us on 1300 846 643 (1300 VINNIES) if they need assistance with the form or are
unable to apply on-line.
People who are located in LGAs serviced by The Salvation Army are asked to go to the website w
ww.salvationarmy.org.au/drought or call 1300 551 030.
The current drought has been impacting some communities now for 8 years, and we are thankful that the DCSI
funding will continue the work that the Society has been delivering for drought affected communities. Thank
you for your support of the DCSI program and I look forward to your assistance, as we fine tune our systems
over the coming weeks. In the meantime, please continue to pray for rain.
