ERNIE KENT IN FIRST SEASON WITH THE COUGARS:
Veteran head coach and former Fox Sports and Pac-12
Networks basketball analyst was named the 18th head
coach in WSU mens basketball history, March 31, 2014, re-
placing Ken Bone, who served as the Cougar head coach
for ve seasons.
Kent came to Pullman with a 325-254 (.561) mark as a
head coach, having spent six seasons at the helm for
Saint Marys in Moraga, Calif., and 13 at Oregon.
In his 13 years at Oregon, Kent compiled a 235-174(.575) record and a 109-125 (.466) conference mark.
His 109 conference wins rank 17th most in Pac-12
history (including Pacic-8 and Pacic-10 Confer-
ences).
While at Oregon, Kent led the Ducks to seven post-
season appearances, including ve NCAA Tourna-
ment Appearances (2000, 2002, 2003, 2007, 2008) as
well as a Pac-10 regular-season (2002) and two con-
ference tournament (2003, 2007) titles.
COUGARS VERSUS BRONCOS :
Saturday marks the fth all-time meeting between Wash-
ington State and Santa Clara, as WSU has won all four
meetings in the series.
WSU has played at Santa Clara just once, escaping with a
win in overtime during the 2010-11 season. The two teams last met Dec. 11, 2011, as WSU posted a
93-55 win over Santa Clara, marking the last 90-point per-
formance from Washington State prior to this season.
In the last meeting, then-junior Brock Motum led WSU
with a then career-high 27 points.
Then-senior Charlie Enquist recorded his second career
double-double (18 points and 10 rebounds)...he scored a
career rst-half high 14 points.
Enquist went 7-7 from the eld.
Current seniors DaVont Lacy and Dexter Kernich-Drew
are the only two Cougars to have played against Santa
Clara, as they scored 8 and 3 points in that game, respec-
tively.
Just one season prior, Washington State used overtime
to defeat Santa Clara, 85-79, Dec. 19, 2010, at Santa Clara.
Then-junior Klay Thompson hit a 3-pointer with 17 sec-
onds to go in regulation to tie the game and scored 7 of
his 23 points in overtime as WSU rallied from a 10-point
second-half decit to beat Santa Clara.
The other meetings between the two schools came Dec.
28, 1973 and Dec. 31, 1946...please see page 1 in todaysnotes for more information on those games.
ROAD WARRIORS:
WSU opened up with a two-game road trip in the state of
Texas, marking just the sixth time it has opened the season
with a true road game outside the state of Washington and
the rst time since Nov. 19, 1999, a 80-55 loss at Nevada.
Washington State was the only Pac-12 school to open the
2014-15 season on the road.
In fact, in the rst two weeks of the season (Friday, Nov.
14-Sun., Nov. 22), just ve true road games were played by
Pac-12 schools, two of those were WSUs games.
The ve road games dont include the seven neutral-site
games.
The Cougars had already played two road games before
any other Pac-12 school had played on the road or at aneutral-site venue.
Five of WSUs rst six games were away from Pullman,
including three games at the Great Alaska Shootout, Nov.
27-29.
WSU will have played seven games away from Pullman
before it hosts its fourth home game of the season against
San Jose State, Sunday, Dec. 21.
ABOUT THE COUGARS:
The Cougars are currently 4-5 after falling in a hard-fought
battle to Gonzaga, Wednesday, Dec. 10 at Spokane Arena.
WSU is 0-3 on the road, 2-1 at neutral sites and 2-1 at
home...WSUs game against Gonzaga counted as a road
game, although played at Spokane Arena.
Last season WSU nished 10-21 overall and 3-15 in Pac-
12 play, nishing 11th. Nine letterwinners returned for the Cougs, including three
starters in seniors DaVont Lacy, Dexter Kernich-Drew and
Jordan Railey.
Lacy and sophomore Ike Iroegbu are the only two Cou-
gars to start all nine games so far this season.
Lacy leads the team and ranks third in the Pac-12 in scor-
ing with 18.0 points per game, just more than one point be-
low his 19.4 ppg average last season.

career-high 20 points a year ago.
Senior DaVont Lacy nished with 14 points, marking his
fth-straight game in double gure scoring.

juryhe also didnt have a 3-pointer last season against
UTEP, Dec. 21, 2013.
WSU shot .521 from the eld (25-for-48), notching its sec-
ond-highest shooting performance of the seasonsec-ond-straight game of shooting at least .520 from the eld.
The Cougars shot .500 (6-for-12) from 3-point range, their
second-highest 3-point eld goal percentage of the sea-
son and second-straight game shooting .500 or better from
3-point range.
GREAT ALASKA SHOOTOUT WRAP UP:
The Cougars nished fourth at the 2014 Great Alaska
Shootout, Nov. 27-29 at Alaska Airlines Center at Anchor-
age.
Senior DaVont Lacy was named to the all-tournament
team as he averaged 16.3 points in three games.
He was named Outstanding Player of the Game in the Cou-
gars nal game, scoring 31 points, 26 of them in the second
half and overtime.
WSU fell to UC Santa Barbara in the rst game, 71-43...UCSB fell to Colorado State in the tournament champion-
ship.
Sophomore Josh Hawkinson was named Outstanding
Player of the Game in game two, a 76-74 victory over Rice,
as he scored 27 points.
In the third game, WSU came back from 12 down at half-
time and won in overtime for the rst time since the 2010-11
season, an 89-84 win over Missouri State.
Freshman Ny Redding had 21 assists in three games, lead-
ing all competitors in the tournament in assists per game.
HAWKINSON LIFTS COUGS TO EXHIBITION WIN:
Sophomore forward Josh Hawkinson averaged just 1.2
points and 1.6 rebounds per game last year as a freshman,
but scored 24 points and grabbed 18 rebounds in WSUs
exhibition win over Azusa Pacic, Friday, Nov. 7.
Hawkinson was 10-for-11 from the eld and 2-for-2 from
3-point range, while 16 of his boards came on the defensive
end.
Senior DaVont Lacy added 22 points for the Cougars, 17
in the second half.
Four newcomers saw action and three of them scored
(freshmen Ny Redding - 3 points and Trevor Dunbar - 1
point, junior Aaron Cheatum - 2 points).
Lacy leads the league with 26 3-pointers made this sea-
son and is second in the league with 2.9 3s made per game.
Lacy is 11th in the conference for free throw percentage
with an .800 (48-for-60) clip...hes made more free throws
than any other Pac-12 student-athlete this season.
Sophomore Josh Hawkinson is third in the league in re-
bounding with 9.6 boards per game...hes 12th in the Pac-12
in scoring with 14.3 points per game.
Hawkinson is tied for eighth in the league with 1.7 blocked
shots a game and seventh in free throw percentage with a
.840 (21-for-25) clip.
Freshman point guard Ny Redding has been a surprise forthe Cougars, moving into the starting lineup.
He leads the team and ranks seventh in the Pac-12 with
4.8 assists per game, ranking second-highest among all
Pac-12 freshman for assists per game.
Redding ranks sixth in the league with a 2.3 assist/turn-
over ratio...hes tops amongst all Pac-12 freshmen.
LACY MARKING UP RECORD BOOKS:
Senior DaVont Lacy is making his mark on the WSU re-
cord books.
In the rst round of the 2014 Pac-12 Tournament, Lacy be-
came the 34th Cougar to reach 1,000 career points, ending
the season in 32nd with 1,023 points.
He is the ninth-fastest Cougar to reach the milestone as
he accomplished the feat in 85 games.
Lacy has since moved up to 18th on the list with 1,185points and is 37 points away from Ron Bennink (1953-55)
in 17th.
If Lacy were to average the same amount of points as
last season (19.4) and stays healthy and plays at least 31
games, he would nish his career with at least 1,624 points,
which would put him fourth in WSUs record books.
If he sticks with his career average of 12.6 ppg, he will
nish with 1,395 points which would put him at 11th in the
WSU career record books.
If Lacy stays at 18.0 ppg, he would nish with 1,596 points,
which would put him at fourth in WSUs record books.
Lacy is also climbing up the record books for career
3-pointers made and is on pace for the record, currently in
sole possession of seventh place with 207 made 3-pointers.
He is currently 1 away from Isaac Fontaine (1994-97) in
sixth place with 208 made 3-pointers.
Lacy is just 35 3-pointers away from tying Klay Thompson
for the school record...if he were to stay healthy during his
senior season, Lacy would need to average just under 2
made 3-pointers per game to reach the record...hes aver-
aging 2.9 right now.
BLOCK PARTIES:
Junior Junior Longrus has moved onto WSUs career list
for blocked shots, currently ranked 20th with 47 blocks in
his career.
With a 0.7 career blocks per game average, Longrus is
on pace to nish with 85 blocked shots in his career, which
would put him at 12th on WSUs all-time list.
HAWKINSONS TRANSFORMATION:
Sophomore Josh Hawkinson is averaging 14.3 points, 9.6
rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game in WSUs six games this
season...hes playing 30.9 minutes per outing.
Hawkinson had just his rst and second career double-
doubles in WSUs second and third games this season...he
had 14 points and 13 boards in the teams loss at TCU and
career highs with 26 points and 15 rebounds in the home
opener against Idaho State...he had his third double-double
against Idaho, Dec. 3 and fourth at Gonzaga, Dec. 10.
Last season Hawkinson averaged just 1.2 points and 1.6
rebounds a game in 6.4 minutes an outing, while compiling
just 4 blocks the entire season.
He is scoring 13.1 more points and grabbing 8.0 more re-
bounds this year than last year and has already played 98
more minutes than he did all of last year.
