The West Tennessee War Eagles of the GDFL (Gridiron Development Football League) opened their season here in Brownsville April 3. The War Eagles came out soaring with a 28-12 routing of the Memphis Blast. Head Coach Trent Boykin was pleased with the team’s performance and preseason win over a division rival. There was a nice crowd on hand to witness this extraordinary event at John B. Hooper Memorial Stadium. Former Tomcats play-ing for the War Eagles included: Jocoby Bond, Larry Fouse, and Chris Covington to name a few. Bond and Fouse put on an exceptional show in front of their home crowd.
“A win is a win, and it felt good to get a win,” Head Coach Trent Boykin stated postgame. “A lot of credit goes to the play-ers, and it’s good to get this thing up and running on the positive side.”The guys had great enthu-siasm, and they played hard.” Boykin said his
team responded well in its first action against an established franchise.
“(Our players) were thinking too much at first, but then they just started playing,” Boykin said. “We got to most of our offensive plays, and our defense gave us a lot of red-zone chances.”We got really good play out of quarterbacks Antwoine Beard and Lydale Wells, and our running backs, wide receivers, defen-sive line and secondary played well.” Boykin said the defense inter-cepted three passes and gave the offense sever-al short fields that led to scores.”We weren’t out-manned out there,” Boykin said. “All of our mistakes are correct-able, and the biggest things we need to fix in practice this week are three fumbles and a few things on the offensive line.” Players Boykin said excelled Saturday included running backs Latrell Billingsley, Kenny Coleman and Jocoby Bond; receivers Josh Person and Justin Mood; defensive lineman Tray Vardiman, Larry Fouse, Devin Jones and Terry
Franklin along with defensive backs Keith Wardlow, Marshall Hych and Jermiah Bullock.
Those who missed this event missed a fun-filled evening of entertainment for the entire family. The Easter egg hunt prior to the game provided
an added bonus to the youngsters in attendance, while other enjoyed the Haywood Junior High step team and Haywood High Marching Tomcat band as halftime enter-tainment to accompany an exciting hard-hitting football game. In talks
with General Manager Ken Williams, this may not be the only visit the War Eagle make to Brownsville. He men-tioned the possibility of offering Brownsville the War Eagles’ first play-off game if they were to make the postseason.
The War Eagles will be back in action this Friday at Milan. All War Eagles regular season home games will be played in Jackson at Lambuth University.
