CAPS & GOWNS (Undergraduate)
Caps and gowns for Commencement are purchased by the University. Undergraduate students,
your graduation fee covers the cost of regalia.
The regalia may be picked up at GradFest on February 28th, from 11:00 am to 4:30 pm.
To pick-up regalia after that date, go to the Bison Shop, JSAC #1022, from 9:00 am to 4:30
pm, Monday through Friday.
Graduating Seniors Outstanding Achievement Award
Each year Gallaudet University gives special honors recognition to graduating seniors who achieve
3.4 or higher cumulative grade point average (GPA).
If your cumulative GPA is between 3.4 to 3.59, you will graduate with Cum Laude
If your cumulative GPA is between 3.6 to 3.79, you will graduate with Magna Cum Laude
If your cumulative GPA is between 3.8 to 4.0, you will graduate with Summa Cum Laude
Recipients will receive gold stole along with their names and honor awards printed in the
Commencement Program book. Check with Kathleen O’Brien ([email protected]) after
you receive your grade report to ensure your name is on the list to receive your award.
The only exception to the 60 credit hour minimum is for first-degree transfer students who have
earned 40-59 credit hours at Gallaudet. These students will be awarded a degree with the
appropriate distinction only if their GPA from Gallaudet and their GPA from all institutions previously
attended meet the cumulative GPA requirements stated above.

Au.D. and Ph.D. candidates may purchase official Gallaudet regalia. Official regalia can be ordered
at GradFest or through Jostens, www.jostens.com. Please visit Bison Shop for your measurements
to be taken. Please refer to page 8 for further information.
Hooding Ceremony
Most Graduate students receive their hoods at the Hooding and Awards Ceremony on
Thursday, May 10th.
Only Ph.D. students will receive their hood at Commencement on Friday, May 11th.
Au.D. and Ph.D. students who purchase custom regalia will keep the regalia along with the
hood and medallions

CUSTOM REGALIA
Authorized by Gallaudet University, this distinctive set of academic regalia may be worn by any
person who holds a doctoral level degree from Gallaudet or is a member of the Board of Trustees.
This gown is made from royal blue chromspun fabric with plush Fidelio royal velvet trim down the
face of the gown and on the sleeves. The velvet is trimmed in gold bullion piping. The back of the
yoke has two pointed pleats that are layered and centered with a decorative braid. These pleats
continue over the shoulder and extend the full length of the front of the gown as two fully layered
panels. Special tailoring gathers the material to from ta bell shaped, satin lined, sleeve with cuff.
The hood is also very distinctive in that it is separated in the center at the front. It is attached to the
gown on either side of the front opening of the gown with two pewter medallions bearing the
Gallaudet University seal. The outer shell of the hood is royal blue and gold. Hood for the rented
gown is not split and will hang freely around the neck and lay down the back. There are no
medallions with the rented hood.
A six-sided tam is the authorized cap. Made of black velvet, this cap is adorned with a gold bullion
tassel.
You can get measured and order your custom regalia at GradFest on February 28, 2018. The price
can be obtained by contacting Jostens.
Inform Jennifer Little, [email protected], if you order special regalia and are a doctoral
graduate so she can order your hood for you by no later than April 1st.

The Undergraduate group graduation photo will be taken on Thursday, May 10th at 11:00 am in front
of Chapel Hall (inside if it rains) Please wear your regalia.
The Graduate, Au.D., and Ph.D. group graduation photo will be taken on Thursday, May 10th at 2:45
pm in front of Chapel Hall (inside if it rains). Please wear your regalia.

COMMMENCEMENT HOUSING
Arrangements for on-campus housing during Commencement will be handled by the Office of
Residence Life and Housing. Graduating students may reserve on-campus housing for family
members and friends. From May 9-12, 2019, the check in is at 10:00 am on Wednesday, May 9th
and check out at 10:00 am on Saturday, May 12th.
The cost will be $40.00 for each person, per night for guests who are 13 years or older.
The rooms/suites will occupy either 1, 2, or 4 person(s). Linens will be included.
Reservations will be on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Room Reservations
When reserving room(s) for family and friends, students or guests complete reservation form
online at www.gallaudet.edu/residence-life-and-housing/commencement-housing
If you wish to pay by credit/debit card, you will receive Residence Life and Housing email
with online payment instructions after we receive your completed reservation form.
Cash is accepted in person only.
All reservation forms and full payments must be submitted by May 1, 2018 to receive
confirmations on room reservations.
Booking confirmations will be communicated to the contact persons via e-mail on Tuesday, May
8th.
To check in on-campus housing
Guests will not be permitted to check-in before 10am on Wednesday, May 9th and must check-
out no later than 10:00 am, Saturday, May 12th. Permission for early arrival will not be granted.
Keys, access cards, linens, towels, blankets, and pillows will be issued when guests check into
their assigned on-campus housing. Other personal articles are the responsibility of the guests.
Guests will not be given a key without a reservation.
No refunds for room reservations will be given for late arrivals, early departures or
cancellations. There is a cancellation fee of $25.00 per room/suite if cancellations are made
after May 1, 2018.
Graduating students may continue to stay on campus until 10:00 a,, Saturday, May 12th.
Students may accommodate their guest(s), space permitting, in their suites at the same charge
per person.

ON-CAMPUS HOUSING FAQs
When can I reserve rooms for commencement?
We are accepting requests on a first come, first serve basis from now until May 1, 2018.
Do you offer a group rate?
No, we do not offer group rates. The charges will be based on the number of people who are
registered as guests.
Is there a limited number of commencement guests?
No, but each person must be assigned to a bed in each room/suite except children who are 2
yeas old or younger.
Can we stay with the graduating student in a suite?
If there are available beds in the suite, then this is possible.
Can I register my child(ren)?
Yes, you can. All families with children will be assigned to Carlin Hall, Clerc Hall, and LLRH6 due
to private bathrooms being available. There will be no charge for children under the age of 12.
Will I get a suite with private bathroom?
Yes, all commencement guests will be assigned to Carlin Hall, Clerc Hall, and LLRH6. If there is
an overflow requests then assignments will be made in residence hall(s) where only community
bathrooms are available.
Will linens be provided?
Linens are included in the cost for the visit. Linens include pillow, pillowcase, two sheets, blanket,
and a towel. However, they will not be exchanged on a daily basis.
What amenities are included in the room?
There are suites with 2 to 4 twin-sized beds, desks, chairs, closets, dressers, and nightstands.
We do not provide microwave, refrigerator, hanger, hair dryer, iron, or ironing board.
Will I have access to Wi-Fi?
Yes, you will get instructions on how to register for Wi-Fi in the Booking Confirmation e-mail.
Can I choose a specific residence hall?
Guests will be assigned to a specific residence hall according to availability of the suites/rooms
along with the needs of each group.
Do you have special housing accommodations for guests with medical or disability
needs?
Yes, we do. Please be sure to let us know the specific accommodation you need on the
Commencement Housing form. The accommodations, include but are not limited to, suites with
bathtubs, wheelchair accessible rooms, showers with railing, and being assigned to lower floors.
Where can I get a parking pass?
Parking passes can be purchased at the Department of Public Safety office. To inquire more

ON-CAMPUS HOUSING FAQs
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept credit and debit cards (Visa, MasterCard, and Discover) and cash, in person only. If
you prefer to pay with cash, payments must be received by May 1st or room assignments will
not be given.
When will the charges be made on the credit/debit cards?
You will receive an email from our office with online payment information if you wish to pay
online. In order to be guaranteed a room(s) in our residence halls, all Commencement Housing
forms must include payments made in full. All charges made by debit/credit cards will be made
immediately when payments are made online.
Is there a cancellation fee?
Yes, if you choose to cancel your request for Commencement Housing any time after May 1,
2018, the cancellation fee is $25.00 per room/suite and it will be deducted from your form of
payment. The remaining balance will be refunded to you at the address as indicated on
Commencement Housing form. No refunds for room reservations will be given for late arrivals or
early departures.
When can I check in and check out?
Graduating students, you will remain in campus and check out by 10:00 am on Saturday, May
12th. Graduating students without on-campus housing, you can check in after 2:00 pm on
Monday 7th and check out by 10:00 pm on Saturday, May 12th. Commencement guests, you
can check in after 10:00 am on Wednesday, May 9th and check out before 10:00 am on
Saturday, May 12th.
What if I lose my room key and/or Access card?
You can report the lost key and/or Access card to the residence hall front desk and a
replacement will be given to you. The cost of replacement would be $50.00 for the lost key and
$25.00 for Access card. Payments for the replacement(s) must be made upfront prior to getting a
new replacement(s).
Where can I get my meals on campus?
The MarketPlace at Jordan Student Academic Center (JSAC) will be open for breakfast and
lunch. Hanson Dining Plaza (cafeteria) is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You can
purchase your meals with cash or credit/debit cards. There are also a variety of local restaurants
that are within walking distance.
Am I allowed to bring my dog(s)?
No, Gallaudet University does not allow any kind of pets inside the building unless it is a service
dog. According to the handbook, visitors with service animals may bring their service animals on
campus without formally registering their service animals but the guests are responsible for
ensuring that their service animals have up-to-date immunizations and vaccines in compliance
with District of Columbia vaccination requirements at the time of their campus visits.

GENERAL FAQs
GradFest
Should I bring my cash, credit, and/or debit card to GradFest?
Yes, if you want to obtain an Alumni membership, purchase memorabilia, or photos.
Do I have to pay for my cap and gown?
Au.D. and Ph.D. graduates will have the option of purchasing custom regalia to keep. Otherwise,
the University will cover the cost of rentals for Au.D. and PH.D. students. The University will also
pay for the non-returnable regalia for Undergraduate and Graduate students.
Is there a difference in the look of the custom vs. rented regalia?
Yes, the custom regalia is custom tailored for the individual. It has a split hood which will be
buttoned on with Gallaudet medallions. It has decorative figure not included on the rental regalia.
The rental regalia does not include decorative features and the hood drapes around the neck
freely. Samples will be available at GradFest.
Commencement
How many tickets can I get for Commencement?
Seating in the Field House is limited so each graduate will receive 5 tickets for non-reserved
seating. Tickets can be picked up at Campus Activities front desk during the week of May 7th to
May 11th. The location of overflow seating will be announced at a later date.
Can I get “additional” tickets for Commencement?
Requests for additional tickets are not guaranteed due to the number of students graduating and
available seating at Field House. You can sign up for additional tickets at GradFest or e-mail
If I don’t need 5 tickets, can I give my tickets to another student?
Yes, each student is entitled to 5 tickets. If you know you will not use all of your tickets, you can
return them back to Campus Activities front desk so we can have accurate attendee count.
Tickets will also go to students who signed up for additional tickets.
When and where do I pick up my cap and gown for Commencement?
Non-returnable regalia may be picked up at GradFest on February 28th from 11:00 am to 4:30
pm. To pick up regalia after that date, go to Bison Shop, JSAC #1022 from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm,
Monday through Friday.
When will I receive the custom regalia that I ordered?
Custom regalia will be mailed to you directly from Jostens. All orders for custom regalia must be
made by the Josten timeline for you to receive it in time for Commencement. Please refer to
www.jostens.com/college or (800) 854-7464
What time can my family arrive at the Field House?
The doors at Field House will open at 12:15 pm.

How do I request International spoken language interpreting requests?

How can I make VISA letter requests for International guests/family?
You can sign up to make requests at GradFest with Danilo Torres. After GradFest, you can send

Are there assigned seats?
No, guests will be seated in the bleachers.
What if my guests, with medical or disability, requires special accommodations?
You can communicate the request with Olusegun Aluko at GradFest. After GradFest, you can
send an email to [email protected] no later than May 1, 2018. Special
arrangements will be made for guests with special needs along with one companion, if advance
notice is given to allow for accommodations.
What if my family and/or friends showed up for Commencement unexpectedly, will they
still be able to attend?
Overflow seating will be available for your guests. The location of overflow seating will be
announced at a later date.
Will there be refreshments after Commencement?
Yes, the University will provide a reception in honor of the graduates, their families, friends,
faculty, and staff in Jordan Student Academic Center (JSAC) immediately following the
Commencement Ceremony.
Will there be any arrangement for childcare?
No, we do not have any resource or service for childcare.
After Graduation
What services are available to alumni?
Career services re available to alumni within the first twelve months following graduation. Contact

When will I get my diploma?
Diplomas and one official copy of transcript will be mailed after Commencement, to students who
have completed graduation requirements as of May 2018 and paid all of their outstanding debts.
Students who completed their degree requirements as of August 2018 will receive their diplomas
around April 2019 through mail. Confirm your mailing address with the Registrar’s Office before
Commencement.
Note: University policy states that the University will not release diplomas or transcripts
to students with any outstanding debt.
