“...come away by yourselves to a lonely place and rest awhile.” (MARK 6-13) Do you spend time, every day, alone and in
silence listening to how God is calling you? If not, you are missing out on a wonderful opportunity to develop a more personal relationship with Him. Unless we talk and more importantly, listen to God every day, how else will we know how He is calling us? Consider making a retreat this year, spend some “alone” time with God.
Dear Friends,
I certainly hope you're able to gain some needed rest and renewal this summer. Many of us feel guilty for taking time off to reenergize and recharge ourselves. How sad!!! Rest is not only essential for the health in the human experience but also one of the Ten Commandments: "keep holy the Lord's day" or Sabbath as our Jewish brothers and sisters call it. Rest is so essential to the human experience that Jesus Himself urges His disciples to "come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest for a while" as our gospel this Sunday instructs. Verona, West Orange and the surrounding West Essex area is so pretty with parks, trails, and even our own lake across the street. And the State of New Jersey is such a gem! Our beaches, mountains, hills and other natural attractions bring folks from all over, yet we often don't take advantage of it ourselves. Reflecting on the glory of God in nature can teach us so many beautiful things. Whether or not your means and circumstances allow you take a vacation please don't short change yourself, or God Himself by not resting! Summer just makes it easier. But don't take my word for it. Back to this Sunday's gospel: " come away by yourselves for a while and rest"!
Peace, blessings and fraternal regards, Rev. Joseph A. D’Amico

Who is RCIA for? 1. Persons in need of Baptism 2. Persons baptized in another Christian tradition who desire to become Catholic 3. Persons baptized Catholic in need of First Communion and/or Confirmation How did a person become Catholic before RCIA and why the change? At most parishes, the person was given individual instruction by the parish priest, or someone delegated by him. There were a number of limitations to private instruction. The priest was the only member of the Catholic community with whom the inquirer had contact, apart from any supporting family and friends. Private instruction did not ensure that the inquirer had a lived experi-ence of the Catholic faith, or was exposed to authentic Christian charity as lived in a parish community. If you or anyone you know is interested in becoming Catholic or completing the Sacraments of Initiation, please have them contact Linda Rachel by phone 201.953.9289, email John Rachel at [email protected], or leave their name and number at the Pastoral Center 973.239.5696.
Save the Dates Kinderfest—Friday, September 28, 2018 Oktoberfest—Saturday, September 29, 2018 Mark your calendars! Our Lady of the Lake will be hosting our very successful events again this year. Thank you for your support!
The Our Lady of the Lake Parish Choir is a dedicated group of parishioners who sing for the 10:30am Sunday mass as well as for major feast days. The choir rehearses on Thursday evenings from 7:30-9pm in the church and is open to all individuals high school age and older. Here are some great reasons to join the choir:
-A sense of pride in contributing to the liturgical life of the parish. Remember, the more you put into the liturgy, the more you get out of it!
- A chance to take a break from a busy week and make beautiful music with fellow parishioners.
- An opportunity to participate in an annual Parish Christmas Concert with professional soloists and instrumentalists.
-Singing in a church choir is an excellent experience for high school students and looks great on a college application!
-Full-time and Part-time singers are welcome. No musical training or audition is required. Instrumentalists are also welcome. If you are interested in joining the choir, please contact music director Henry Gehman at 973-239-5696 ext. 218 or at [email protected].

Stewardship of Treasure
Notes from Newark By David Strader
One of the hardest jobs for a volunteer at St. John’s Soup Kitchen is passing out the pastries in the morning. There’s just too many choices. So last week I was a little anxious as I stood behind the tray of baked goods. “What would you like, sir?” “I’ll take that one.” “What would you like, sir?” “I’ll take that donut.” “How about you, what would you like?” “Let me see...let me see...I’m not sure...I’ll take that one,” said the man, vaguely pointing. “This one?” “No, the other one, the cupcake!” Since there weren’t any cupcakes, I was at a loss. “How about this muffin?” “NOT THAT ONE!!” Ooookay. Time for a reset. We finally got the selection straightened out and I went on to the next fellow of about 150 in line. It occurred to me later that life is often like that. We have too many choices available to make consistent, rational decisions. What am I going to do tonight: watch TV, read a mystery, finish a theological essay on Christian doctrine, or pray the Liturgy of the Hours? They are all good things, but jumping from interest to interest makes it hard to achieve any progress in anything. I give thanks to God for the anchor in my life that is St. John’s Soup Kitchen. And I give thanks to all of you, the members of OLL who have supported this ministry consistently for over 3 decades. Donut anyone?
