"COME FURTHER UP, COME FURTHER IN!" -- C. S. Lewis
I want to try to help the parish understand what I am up to with
the changes in the liturgy at the parish Masses. In the first place,
I hope that I am not up to much. I think that the changes are
generally slight. The liturgy at Saint Rose remains very much
with the mind of the Church. I simply want to do what the Church
directs. My goal is simply one of emphasis: to emphasize the
Glory of God! When it is game day, for example, we put on our
jerseys, make special foods, chant our cheers, wear distinctive colors, etc. that
we would not do at other times. That's because it's all about our team. When we
come to worship God, it's all about God! We need reminders of how awesome
God is. We call this the transcendence of God: that God goes beyond even our
wildest imaginings. We inherit much of what we do from our Christian and
Jewish ancestors in faith. Incense, for example, is a sign of transcendence. It is
a sign of our prayers rising to God; of the sweet fragrance of God's presence
that lingers; of the mystery of God -- the cloud that shrouds the presence of God
on Mount Sinai, for example. Chant also points to God's transcendence: it
elevates our speech. On the human level, for example, can you imagine reciting
the "Happy Birthday" song to somebody? That just won't do. Even if you can't
sing, you just have to sing it! Everything in the liturgy is for God, not for us. It is
the one thing we can do for God. The Church tells us how to do it. And we are
blessed beyond belief when we do: Jesus comes to us, Body, Blood, Soul, and
Divinity!
Faithfully,
Fr. Baker
"¡LLEGAR MÁS ARRIBA, IR MAS ADENTRO!" - C. S. Lewis
"Cumpleaños Feliz" a alguien? No se recita, se canta. Incluso si no sabes
Fielmente,
P. Baker

During this Advent, Saint Rose Radio 99.3 FM is available 24/7 to help your spiritual journey to
Christmas and into the New Year. Rather than listening to sports or regular talk radio or music
which is not edifying, check us out while driving around town or at home or on line. Jesus is waiting
for you to listen to Him and His church this Advent and Christmas season. Remember also to
spend some time in adoration, go to confession and think of something to give Jesus, after all it is
His birthday we are celebrating so give him a gift of your time or charity to someone in need. God
bless and have a blessed Advent and Christmas…your friends at Saint Rose Radio.
HAITI
Thank you for your generosity in supporting this ministry. Fr. Andre has begun the construction of
the new building for 2 classrooms. Yes, this is going well. He asked the men of the parish to
“invest” in the school through SWEAT EQUITY. Each man donates a full Saturday of work on the
construction. The work consists of mixing the concrete to pour into handmade wooden block
forms. The forms are moved into the sun to dry. Once dried, the blocks are stacked until there are
enough to build a wall. The base on the building is made of stones and concrete. Re bar is laid
atop the stones to provide stability. Cement is hand mixed and construction begins with the first
row of blocks and vertical re-bar is added. The most difficult and labor-intensive work is mixing the
concrete and cement with a hand operated mixer. As the walls go up, the men use handmade
ladders. Rafters go on top and tin roofs are added. Windows are placed in the walls throughout the
construction. They remain as openings for air to circulate. The windows are not as large as one
might think for the tropics. The classrooms remain open to mosquitoes which might transmit
Malaria, Dengue, Chikungunya and Zika viruses. The current classrooms are 45 years old and
have survived hurricanes and heat. If you would like to contribute an end-of-the-year contribution,
we welcome such. Just mark your contribution for HAITI CLASSROOMS. Over the next 5 years or
sooner, we need to replace all original classroom buildings.
