3 Uplifting and Cutting Edge Voice Workshops

offering you a positive alternative to traditional Voice Pedagogy.

1) The Moving Voice ‘Behind Every Moving Voice is a Dancing Body.’

Discover how Movement can help you Free Your Voice

ALL MUSIC AND SINGING BEGINS WITH MOVEMENT

(whether breathing to sing, or lifting your arm to drum).

We even talk of ‘MOVING PERFORMANCES’,

or of how someone’s singing was ‘UPLIFTING’.

Singing in the 21st Century is now opening up to a new understanding

of the relationship between your voice and your whole body.

This means that working on your voice

needs to involve much more than just working on your vocal organism .

‘The Moving Voice’ offers you an inspiring guide to

the ways in which movement can HELP YOU RELEASE YOUR VOICE &

ENABLE EXPRESSIVE SINGING OF SONGS MUSIC TO COME ABOUT.

KEY THEMES THE MOVING VOICE WILL EXPLORE

New Voice Movement TechniquesCome and learn how specific gestures and kinaesthetic images of the body in motion can be used in connection with singing to stimulate the appropriate bodily changes you need to help free your voice. Each of these exercises have intriguing names, such as: Ÿ Up and Over Ÿ Linguini Pull Ÿ Breath Kneading Ÿ Ice Skater & Ÿ Airing the Quilt.

These Voice Movement processes will help you:·Develop the freedom of your BREATHING

· Expand the RANGE and DYNAMICS of your Voice · Enliven your RESONANCE · OPEN YOUR THROAT and much more.

Also discover how your moving body can be experienced as an organ of listening, e.g.· explore how each VOWEL and CONSONANT

gives rise to unique gestures and are connected to different parts of your body.

Sounds in Space - Sounds in MovementOn this workshop you’ll also have the exciting opportunity to experience a unique approach to music Tonalis is famous for, where we take the musical architecture of a composition and

i) transpose it into a movement form (e.g. explore how to choreograph a ‘Round’) or

ii) enhance it through the spatial placement and movement of singers. Glorious music will then be heard coming from above, behind, below and in front.

N.B. All Tonalis Body-Mind-Voicework is inspired by:

Ÿ ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE Ÿ VOICE MOVEMENT THERAPY

Ÿ DALCROZE EURHYTHMICS Ÿ STEINER’S EURYTHMY

Ÿ LABAN’S MOVEMENT QUALITIES & Ÿ YOGA FOR SINGERS.

Workshop 2 August 1st - 2nd

Holistic Breathwork for Singing & HealthThis unique workshop will take you on a fascinating journey into the physiology, psychology and spirituality of natural breathing that will provide you with a new holistic vision of breathing. It will also show you how ancient and spiritual understandings of working with the breath (e.g. Zen Buddhism and Mindfulness) can compliment new breath-work processes derived from the Alexander Technique, Werbeck singing and Voice Science.

It will explore with you all aspects of breathing in relationship to

i) YOUR VOICES and ii) YOUR LIVES in ways that will improve not only your SINGING but your sense of WELL-BEING.

In particular the workshop will help you learn:— how to breathe in freely (i.e. without gasping)

— how to energise your breathing, and — how to sustain your breath so you can sing longer phrases of music

(helped by Tonalis’ totally new understanding of ‘BREATH SUPPORT’).

Typically singers are taught to work with breathing mainly through the use of physical techniques. But, just consider how we speak of ‘breathing fresh life into someone’.

So come and explore how the PATTERNS of your breathing - i.e. the volume, pressure and frequency - are clearly connected with:

— every aspect of your LIFE (e.g. many people feel they have no room to breathe in their lives)— your EMOTIONS (e.g. laughter, crying, and anger, etc.) and — your PSYCHOLOGY (e.g. how shallow breathing can be linked to anxiety, etc.).

KEY THEMES HOLISTIC BREATHING WILL EXPLORE

This workshop - which offers a radical alternative to conventional pedagogies -will therefore work from the key premise thatbreathing needs to be explored holistically

in relationship to your BODY, MIND, SOUL and SPIRIT.

Whole Body BreathingCome and explore how the freedom of your respiratory system is dependent on the co-ordination of your whole body, because any body rigidity blocks the breath. This will include an exploration of new perspectives on the role your lungs, diaphragm, ribs, spine, abdomen, pelvic floor and legs play in breathing.

(N.B. This work will be aided by the ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE.)

How Your Vocal Folds Influence Your Breath ControlLearn how breath control is also connected to your vocal folds, not just your diaphragm, etc.

Breathing as an Act of Opening & Breathing as Act of ListeningOne of the unique parts of this workshop will be learning how breathing can open up your inner and outer sense of space. Thus we will explore new Tonalis techniques called:i) ‘THE SPACIOUS BREATH’ and ii) ‘THE SMILING BREATH’

to transform all those times when you feel there is no space in your life and no room to expandiii) ‘THE RELEASE IS THE NEW BREATH’ which will help your breath to naturally fill

you, instead of ‘taking’ breaths which trigger constrictioniv) ‘THE LISTENING BREATH’

This process will help you become aware how breathing is also an act of listening.

Psychological and Emotional Aspects of BreathingMindful breathing can enhance your health/well-being through the way it can spread calmness and power through your whole being. Tonalis’ inspiring breathwork therefore provides not only a means of transforming your voice, but a means of transforming your self.

Spiritual Aspects of BreathingFor this theme we will explore:

l how breathing for singing can be connected to the subtle energy system of your ‘chakras’ and ‘etheric body’

l the relationship between INHALATION & INSPIRATION and

EXHALATION & EXPRESSION.

l vocal breathing meditations on themes ofAllowing, Deepening, Inspiration and Healing.

Workshop 3 August 4th - 6th

Colours of the VoiceCome and Discover

how Your Voice can be like a Whole Orchestra

full of the Most Amazing Tone Colours(from voicing the Violin " Flute " Clarinet " Saxophone)

so you can Create Different Voice Qualities

& Sing in Different Voice Styles.

This workshop offers you the unique opportunity to: i) learn how to use ALL THE COLOURS of your WHOLE VOICE

ii) Sing in Different Vocal Styles which call for Different Colour Ideals. So come and explore lots of Cross-Genre voicings from

Ÿ Classical & Ÿ Early Music Styles to Ÿ Folk Ÿ World Ÿ Popular and Ÿ Jazz Voices!

Through these new ‘Tonalis School of Singing’ methods you’ll develop your vocal flexibility in amazing ways so that you can sing with

a truly MODERN MULTI-CULTURAL VOICE.

To get a sense of the great variety of voice colours, think of all these iconic singers.CLASSICAL - Kathleen Ferrier & Pavarotti EARLY MUSIC - Alfred Deller & Emma Kirkby

WORLD - Tibetan Monks & Bulgarian Women JAZZ - Frank Sinatra & Louis Armstrong

POPULAR - Elvis Presley, Björk & Eva Cassidy FOLK - Jeannie Robertson & Joe Heaney21st C. EXTENDED VOICINGS - Cathy Berberian.

(Most people, however, mainly sing with just one colour - or mode of voice production.)

So come and explore: i) why every period of music history has different vocal aesthetics and styles of singing. Think of Gregorian Chant, the pure bel-canto of Mozart, or the visceral power and drama of Verdi. ii) why every world and folk culture chooses different voice qualities from: yodelling in Georgia " falsetto in Chinese opera " sub-glottic pressure in Flamenco voices " the overtones of Mongolian singers " the primal voices of the Blues Holler.

On this workshop you’ll also have the chance to learn how to bring about the most appropriate tone colour that responds to

the changing Ÿ emotions Ÿ musical and Ÿ textual needs of each piece you sing.

KEY THEMES COLOURS OF THE VOICE WILL EXPLORE

EVERYONE can produce a huge array of beautiful colours with their voicesbecause the structures of your vocal organism are incredibly mobile.

So come and explore:

t How to Create Different Voice Qualities and Voice Colours - just like a painter mixes colours -

through Opening Up Different Resonance Chambers & Registersand how to make your vocal tract smaller or larger.

Using these means you’ll find you can paint ‘BRIGHTER’ and ‘DARKER’ colours with your voice.

t How to Develop Your Vocal Expression by bringing a variety of Different Types of Voicing into your singing,

from i) singing with the intimacy of the BREATHY voice

to ii) playing with different DYNAMIC and EFFORT LEVELS(just compare Bing Crosby with Freddie Mercury).

Then we’ll apply all these new techniques to the interpretation of iconic songs.

t Explore Varieties of Phrasing & How to become a Sound Sculptor Different types of phrasing are a key element of vocal style. So come and get inside the way: Ÿ Classical singers sing through the notes of a phrase in an even, long-line legatoŸ Jazz Swing-style singers sculpt (and fall off) the notes Ÿ Folk singers sing syllabically

Ÿ Early Music singers sculpt gestural groups of notes.

i) A WHOLE RANGE OF SPECIAL VOCAL EFFECTS from creaked on-set/off-set of notes, vibrato fades and flips between registers, to the use of inverted diphthongs (in folk, jazz and pop styles) and stylistic ways of singing consonants.

ii) the way GLIDING Tones are used by popular singers, jazz, world & folk singerswhereas classical singers are taught to sing clear well-tuned discrete pitches.

iii) different types of Vibrato, from Mongolian, Sardinian, Gospel and opera voicings to using vibrato as an expressive form of ornamentation in Early Music.

iv) how to bring into your singing of songs

LABAN’S Movement Qualities Ÿ float Ÿ glide Ÿ press Ÿ dab Ÿ flick Ÿ punch Ÿ slash

& THE 4 ELEMENTS of Ÿ Earth Ÿ Air Ÿ Water & Ÿ Fire.

N.B. You can choose between coming to:
