withtheforcesinWorldWarOneandsurvivedtheconflict.At
thecentenaryoftheoutbreakoftheGreatWar,aprojectwas
launchedtolearnmoreaboutthose187membersandalso
aboutpastandfutureQueen’sParkfootballerswhosurvivedthe
hostilitiesbutwerenotmembersoftheclubatthetime.
LittleinformationwasreadilyavailableabouttheQueen’sPark
memberswhoserved.Newspapersofthetimeandgenealogy
andmilitaryhistorywebsiteshavebeenaccessedand,insome
cases,descendantsofthemenconcernedhavecomeforward
withinformation.Aninitialresearchpaperon44ofthese
membersandplayerswasissuedinApril2016.Thisresultedin
moreinformationbeingsubmittedonthesemenandourfindings

playerTomFitchie,whopresumablywasnotavailableforthoseopeningtwomatches,andhedidnotfeatureinthefirstelevenagain.
Inhisbook“HistoryoftheQueen’sParkFootballClub1867-1917”,RichardRobinsonreferstoGunnerAlexGBennettoftheRoyal
GarrisonArtillery(RGA).TheAncestrywebsiteincludestheenlistmentformofAlexanderJosephBennettwhowas34yearsand3
monthsinMarch1917andaGunnerintheRGA.Hewasanunmarriedmastertilelayerwholivedat70ParkRoad,Glasgow.Given
thattheQueen’sParkplayerfrom1907wasAJBennett,itseemslikelythatAlexanderJosephBennettwastheQueen’sParkmember.
However,thereisalsoarecordofanotherGunnerAlexanderBennettinRGAbutnothingfurtherisknownabouthim.
OneGunnerABennettoftheRGAwasawardedtheMilitaryMedalbutitisnotknownwhichone.
2. James B BennettJamesBryceBennettwasbornat140MainStreet,RuthergleninMay1891.HisfatherRobert
wasadraper.HismotherCatherine’smaidennamewasBryce,whichexplainsJames’middle
name.
JamesBBennettplayedforQueen’sParkbetweenseasons1909/10and1913/14inavariety
offorwardpositions.HemadehisdebutagainstFalkirkon20April1910.Heplayedtwomore
gamesinthatseason,twogamesinthefollowingseason,andafurthertwogamesinseason
1913/14.HisfinalgamewasagainstPartickThistleon28April1914.
JamesenlistedintheHighlandLightInfantryinNovember1914andreceivedagunshotwound
inthebackon15July1916.Atthatpoint,hewas25yearsofageandaSergeantinthe9th
Battalion.
3. Dan BroadheadDanMcKayBroadheadwasborninPeebleson16November1891,thesonofafarmstoreman.In1911,Danwaslivingat36Ledard
RoadinGlasgow’sLangsideareawithhisfather,mother,twosistersandthreebrothers.Hewasastudentteacher.
DanBroadheadmadeninecompetitiveappearancesatwinghalforinsideforwardforQueen’sParkbetween1912and1914.Hemade
hisdebutagainstClydeon19October1912butdidnotfeatureinthefirstelevenagainuntilseason1914/15whenheplayedoneight
occasions.
DanservedasaPrivateintheHighlandLightInfantryintheGreatWar.
4. Charles BoyceCharlesHBoycemade13competitiveappearancesforQueen’sParkbetween1915and1917.Hemadehisdebutatinsiderightagainst
Celticon4December1915.Hisfinalmatchwason27January1917.
CharlesHBoyceof75StanmoreRoad,MountFloridareceivedtheSilverWarBadgein1916whenhewashonourablydischargeddue
towoundsorsickness.HewasaLieutenantintheRoyalEngineers.TherewasanotherCharlesHBoycewhowasatemporarySecond
LieutenantintheRoyalEngineersbuttheformerseemsmorelikelytohavebeentheQueen’sParkplayer.
ACharlesHislopBoycewasbornat5GordonTerrace,Cathcarton6January1899.Hisfatherwasacivilandminingengineer.Could
thisCharlesBoycehaveplayedforQueen’sParkandservedintheforcesatsuchatenderage?
5. Hugh BrownOn11May1917,Glasgow’sSouthernPressnewspaperreported,“IntimationhasbeenreceivedbyMr.andMrs.Brown,2Grantly
Gardens,Shawlands,thattheirsecondson,SecondLieutenantHughBrown,RoyalScotsFusiliers,hadbeenadmittedtohospitalin
Francesufferingfromgunshotwounds.Lieut.Brown,whowasintheLovatScoutspriortobeingcommissioned,isthewell-known
Pollok–Perthshire–Queen’sParkfootballplayer”.
HughBrownfeaturedinasinglecompetitivefirstteammatchforQueen’sPark.
ThatwasatrightbackagainstThirdLanarkon6March1915.

6. William BrownWilliamPBrownwasaninsideforwardwithQueen’sParkfromseason1909/10toseason1912/13.Heplayedmainlyforthesecond
eleven,theStrollers,butfeaturedin11competitivefirstteamgames,scoringtwogoals.HemovedtoMotherwellatthestartofseason
1913/14.
Williamenlistedinthe17th(ChamberofCommerce)BattalionoftheHighlandLightInfantry(HLI)intheautumnof1914androsetothe
rankofSergeant.On4August1916,theSouthernPressreportedthathehadbeeninjured.Nodetailsofhisinjuryareknown.
Williamcontinuedhisplayingcareerafterthewar,firstlywithHeartsandthenwithDunfermlineAthletic.
7. Peter BuchananPeterBuchananwasthegrandfatheroflong-servingQueen’sParkplayer,committeememberandpastpresidentPeterBuchanan.He
wasnotaQueen’sParkfirstteamplayerbutisbelievedtohaveplayedfortheclub’sminorelevens.Peterwasalsoaprominentofficial
inamateurfootballbeforetheGreatWarandisthoughttohavebeensecretaryofeithertheScottishAmateurFootballAssociationor
theScottishAmateurFootballLeague,aswellasbeingaQueen’sParkcommitteemember.
PeterjoinedtheHighlandLightInfantryintheGreatWarandrosetotherankofSergeant.TherewasmorethanoneSergeantPeter
BuchananintheHLIandclarificationisrequiredastowhichonewastheQueen’sParkmember.Oneofthesesergeants,whoenlisted
inthe9thBattalionon9September1914,livedat68StirlingRoadinGlasgowandlatertransferredtotheLondonRegiment(London
Scottish).Anotherservedinthe14thBattalionandwasMentionedinDespatches.
Inthepost-waryears,PeterBuchananlivedinKennyhillGardensinDennistounandlaterat724ClarkstonRoadinStamperland.He
wasHeadTeacherofWellshotSchoolinTollcross.
8. David CameronDavidFraserCameronwasborninMaxwellStreetinPartickon12September1895,theson
oftheChiefConstableoftheBurghofPartick.DavidwastheyoungerbrotherofMacdonald
Cameron,oneoftheQueen’sParkplayerswholosttheirlivesintheGreatWar.
Davidwasawinghalfwhomade39competitiveappearancesforQueen’sParkbetween1915
and1920.HewasregisteredwiththeSFAon15January1915andmadehisdebutagainst
Airdrieoniansonthefollowingday.Thiswashisonlygameuntilhereturnedafterthewar.He
wasafirstteamregularinseason1919/20beforesigningforChelseainthesummerof1920.
Hemade83appearancesfortheStamfordBridgesidebeforereturningtoScotlandinDecember
1926tofinishhiscareerwithHelensburgh.
DavidCameronwasaSergeantinthe5thCameronHighlandersintheGreatWar.
9. Robert CameronRobertJCameronwasregisteredasaQueen’sParkplayerfrom1909/10to1911/12butonlyplayedfivecompetitivefirstteamgames.
Hefeaturedtwiceatleftbackinseason1909/10andthreetimesatcentrehalfinseason1910/11.
IntheGreatWar,RobertwasaLanceCorporalintheCameronHighlanders.
10. Claude CraigieClaudeValentineCraigiewasborninMontroseon2July1886,thesonofabankaccountant.
ClaudeCraigiemade106competitiveappearancesforQueen’sParkbetween1908and1912
andscored10goals.HemadehisdebutatcentreforwardagainstMortonon20March1909
andplayedafurtherfourgamesthatseason.Hewasafirstteamregularatlefthalforleft
backinthefollowingthreeseasonsandplayedthreematchesinseason1912/13.Hisfinal
appearancewasagainstHeartson15February1913.
IntheGreatWar,ClaudeservedasaBombardierintheRoyalGarrisonArtillery.

11. Elijah CresswellElijahCresswellwasbornon20July1889at448NewRoadinGlasgow’sParkheaddistrict.His
fatherwasanironworker.
WhenElijahenlistedasaGuardsmaninthe3rdColdstreamGuardsattheageof26in1915,he
livedat18ParkgroveTerraceinGlasgow’sTollcrossarea.HehadmarriedMaryAnnBlackhurst
in1912andtheyhadtwochildren,JohnandElizabeth,atthetimeofhisenlistment.Elijahwas
employedasaClaimsInspector.
ElijahCresswellmade111competitiveappearancesforQueen’sParkbetween1913and1917,
scoring13goals.HewasregisteredasaQueen’sParkplayerfrom1913/14to1918/19.Hemade
hisfirstteamdebutatoutsiderightagainstMotherwellon13December1913andwasaregular
inthesidefortheremainderofthatseason.Heplayed21gamesinthefollowingseason,37
gamesinseason1915/16andsixearlyseasongamesin1916/17.Hisfinalmatchwasagainst
ThirdLanarkon14October1916.
12. Tom FitchieThomasTindalFitchiewasborninEdinburghinDecember1881.Hewasacommercialtraveller
dealinginsportsgoodsandremainedanamateurthroughouthisfootballcareer.Hesignedfor
WoolwichArsenalattheageof19but,beinganamateur,couldguestforotherclubsandalso
featuredforthelikesofTottenham,Fulham,BrightonandNorwich.
TomFitchieplayedforQueen’sParkinScottishCuptiesinseasons1904/05and1905/06
andtheGlasgowMerchants’CharityCupFinalinMay1906,althoughprimarilyanArsenalplayer
atthatpoint.HethenplayedforQueen’sParkthroughoutseasons1906/07and1907/08before
returningtoArsenalinSeptember1908.DuringhisperiodatHampden,hewasregarded
asoneofthecountry’stopplayers.DespitehisreturntoEngland,heremainedamember
ofQueen’sPark.
In1909,TomtravelledtoAmericawiththeEnglishtouringsideThePilgrims.Hegotmarriedin1912andthismarkedtheendofhis
timeasafootballer.
TomwascappedfourtimesforScotland,oneoftheseasaQueen’sParkplayeragainstWalesinMarch1907.Hescoredtheonly
goalofthegameinScotland’sdefeatofIrelandinMarch1906.
TomFitchiewasaSergeantintheArgyllandSutherlandHighlandersintheGreatWar.He
contractedalungdisorderduringhiswarserviceinFranceandthiscontributedtohisdeath
on17October1947.
13. Gordon HoareGordonHoarewasbornintheBlackheathareaofLondonon18April1884.Hestartedhisfootball
careerwithjuniorsidesbeforejoiningWoolwichArsenalin1907.Hemadehisleaguedebutagainst
SheffieldWednesdayon20April1908.Althoughheplayed11Leaguematchesin1908-09,scoring
fivegoals,hewasunhappyatthelackofregularfirstteamfootballandmovedtoGlossopNorth
EndinDecember1909.HeremainedatGlossopforayearbeforereturningtoWoolwichArsenal
inDecember1910.HescoredsixtimesinfourteengamesforArsenalintheseason1910-11but
rejoinedGlossopinFebruary1912.Intotal,heplayed34timesforArsenalandscored13goals.
GordonwasanamateurfootballerandhewaspartoftheEnglandteamthatrepresentedGreat
Britainatthe1912OlympicGamesandwonthegoldmedal.Heplayedinallthreematchesandscoredtwogoals.
AfterhissecondspellatGlossop,GordonHoarejoinedQueen’sParkinNovember1913andmade20appearancesatinsideforward
inseason1913/14,scoringthreegoals.GordonenlistedintheArmyServiceCorps(ASC)intheGreatWar.Hewascommissioned
asaSecondLieutenantintheASCinJuly1917andbytheendofthewarhadbeenpromotedtoLieutenant.Afterthewarended,
GordonreturnedtoLondonandplayedforQueen’sParkRangersandFulham.Heretiredfromfootballin1920anddiedin1973
attheageof89.

JohnLeckieenlistedintheforcesin1916.Hewas33yearsofageatthetimeandacommercialtraveller.Helivedat11Kildonnan
TerraceinIbrox.JohnwentontobecomeaSergeantinthe7thBattalionoftheArgyllandSutherlandHighlanders.
15. Andrew LeslieAndrewLeslieplayedforQueen’sParkfrom1914to1919.Hemadeatotalof13competitiveappearancesinthatperiod,withhis
footballcareerclearlydisruptedbyhisserviceintheforces.InAugust1916,theSouthernPressreportedthatAndrewhadbeen
woundedduringtheSommeoffensivesandwasinhospitalinEnglandHewasahalfbackwhomadehisdebutatMotherwellon21
November1914andmadespasmodicappearancesthereafter,endingwithtwogamesinMarch1919.
AndrewLeslie’sArmyMedalRollsIndexCardstatesthatheservedasaLanceCorporalinthe9thBattalionoftheHighlandLight
Infantryandthenasa2ndLieutenantinthe19thLondonRegiment.Thiscontrastswiththeentryin“TheHistoryofQueen’sPark
FootballClub1867-1917”whichdescribesAndrewLeslieasaLieutenantinthe9thBattalionoftheHLI.
TheArmy’sMedalRollsIndexCard,datingfromtheearly1920s,givesAndrewLeslie’saddressas37HamiltonCrescent,PeelStreet,
Partick.
The1911censusincludesanAndrewLesliewhowasan18-year-oldapprenticeengineerlivingatintheScotstounhillarea.The
1930UScensuslistsa36-year-oldAndrewLesliewhowaslivinginPitsfield,Berkshire,MassachusettswithhiswifeMary.Hewasa
transformerassemblerinelectricalmanufacturingwhohademigratedfromScotlandin1923.DotheserecordsrelatetotheQueen’s
ParkAndrewLeslie?
16. Fred Mackie MMFrederickWilliamMackie,knownasFred,wasborninCathcarton9August1892.BeforevolunteeringforserviceintheGreatWar,he
hadkeptgoalforQueen’sPark’sthirdteam,theHampdenEleven,andhadbeenemployedwiththeplumbingfirmHughTwaddleand
SonsinGlasgow’sGallowgate.
On25August1916,theSouthernPressreported,“SapperFrederickWm.Mackie,RoyalEngineers,sonofMr.Mackie,118LedardRoad,
Langside,hasbeenawardedtheMilitaryMedalforbraveryinthefield,ofwhichofficialintimationhasbeenreceived.”Thereport
stated‘Thatonthenightof10thJuly,whilethecompanywerereturningfromwork,andwereproceedingovertheopenthroughan
artillerybarrage,oneofSapperMackie’scomradeswasseverelywounded.SapperMackiedisplayedconspicuousgallantryinthathe,
underheavyshellfire,remainedwiththewoundedmanandfinallywasmainlyinstrumentalinbringinghimtoaplaceofsafety’.
17. James McBeanJamesLearmontMcBeanmade73competitiveappearances,mainlyatleftback,forQueen’s
Parkbetween1908and1912.HejoinedQueen’sfromAyrFCandmadehisfirstelevendebutin
amatchagainstClydeon22April1909.Hewentontoplay17gamesin1909/10and25games
in1910/11.Hedidnotfeatureinseason1911/12butreturnedasafirstteamregularin1912/13.
JameswasanAyrshiremanandturnedoutattimesforAyrUnitedandKilmarnock.Thispartly
explainshisabsencefromthefirsteleveninseason1911/12.Amateurplayerscouldplayfor
morethanoneclubatthattime.
In1911,Jameswasa20-year-oldmedicalstudentlivingwithhismother,fatherandfoursisters
at212GlasgowRoad,Ardrossan.
JamesservedinIndiaasaCaptainintheRoyalArmyMedicalCorpsintheGreatWar.In1920,he
wasstilllivingat212GlasgowRoad,Ardrossan.

18. Bob McCollRobertSmythMcColl,knownasBoborBobby,wasborninthe
TownheadareaofGlasgowon13April1876.Hemadehisdebut
forQueen’sParkin1894attheageofeighteenandwentonto
becomeoneoftheclub’sgreatestplayers.
BobMcCollwasquicktomakethecentreforwardposition
atHampdenParkhisownandsoonreceivedinternational
recognition.HewascappedeleventimesforScotlandbetween
1896and1901andhadthedistinctionofscoringhattricks
againstWales,IrelandandEngland.Hewentontowinafurther
twocapsafterleavingHampden.
Afterpreviouslyturningdownanumberofoffersfrom
professionalclubs,BobsignedforNewcastleUnitedinOctober
1901.Heusedpartofhissigning-onfeetobecomeapartnerin
hisbrotherTom’snewsagentandconfectionerybusiness,which
wasrenamedRSMcColl’s.
BobMcCollstayedatNewcastlefortwoyearsbeforesigning
forRangersinSeptember1904.HeremainedatIbroxuntil
November1907atwhichpointhewasreinstatedasanamateur
withhisfirstlove,Queen’sPark.Bobretiredfromfootballin
1910attheageof34,scoringsixgoalsinhispenultimategame
forQueen’sagainstPortGlasgowAthletic.InhisHampdencareer,Bobscored112goalsin
180competitivematches,aswellasnumerousgoalsinchallengematchesintheperiodbefore
Queen’sParkjoinedtheScottishLeague.
InJanuary1916,attheageof39,BobenlistedinthearmedforcesandservedinaMechanical
TransportcompanyoftheArmyServiceCorps,risingtotherankofSergeant.Bob’saddressat
thetimeofenlistmentwas66MonreithRoad,Newlands,Glasgow.
BobMcColldiedin1958andisburiedinCathcartCemetery.In2011,hewasinductedintothe
ScottishFootballHallofFame.
19. David McIntoshTheEveningTimesreportedon28December1917that“AnotherQueen’sParkplayer,Sergt.
DavidM’Intosh,H.L.I.,hasbeenwounded.HewillberememberedasthesturdycentreforwardoftheStrollers.Sincegoingabroadhe
hasplayedregularlyfortheregimentalteam.Sergt.M’IntoshisnowinhospitalinEngland.”
DavidMcIntoshwasregisteredwiththeSFAasaQueen’sParkplayerinseasons1914/15and1915/16andthenagainin1918/19.
Davidplayedonecompetitivefirstteammatchinbothofthefirsttwoseasonsandafurtherthreematchestowardstheendofseason
1918/19.
20. John McKechnieJohnMcKechnieplayedthreecompetitivegamesfortheQueen’sParkfirsteleveninseason1914/15.HeservedasaPrivateintheHLI
inthewar.
On13November1918,theDailyRecordandMailreportedthathalf-backJohnM’KechniehadbeendischargedfromtheArmy.The
newspaperstatedthattheplayerhadadamagedarmbutthattheinjurywouldnotbelikelytokeephimoutoffootball.Itisnotknown
ifhedidcontinueasaplayer.However,aJMcKechniebecameamemberoftheQueen’sParkCommitteeanditseemslikelythatthis

duringthe1930sandbecomingPresidentoftheClubfrom1941to1943.Williamdiedon18April1958.

CBMiller,theformersecretaryofQueen’sPark,was
recoveringnicelyfromhiswoundsandhadbeenmovedfrom
NewcastletoGlasgow.CharlesBMiller,knownasCharlie,
wasthefirstpaidSecretaryofQueen’sParkFootballClub.
Theclubdecidedin1894thattherewasarequirementfor
someonewhowouldcombinethedutiesofSecretaryandMatch
Secretary.CharlesMiller,whowasaQueen’sParkmember,
wasappointedoutof59applicants.Charleswasalawyerby
professionandsteeredtheclubthroughmanydifficulties,
includingtheconstructionofthethirdandpresentHampden
Parkandthetransformationoftheclubintoalimitedliability
companyinthewakeoftheIbroxDisaster.CharlesremainedinpostasSecretaryofQueen’sParkfor20yearsuntilhisresignationin
1916whenhejoinedtheforces.
CharlesMillerwasaSergeantintheRoyalArmyServiceCorps,MotorTransport.Hewasa44-year-oldmarriedmanwhenheenlisted
andlivedat13ParkGroveTerraceinwhatwasthenGlasgow’swestend.
24. Peter Moodie DSOPeterAlexanderMoodiewasbornintheTradestondistrictofGlasgowon24May1892.After
leavingschool,heworkedasaninvoiceclerkforhisfatherDavidwhowasManagingDirectorof
AndrewMitchellandCoLtd,canvasmerchants,whohadanofficeinGlasgow’sMerchantCity.
Peter’sfootballhistoryisunclear.HeplayedonlyonefirstteamgameforQueen’sPark–aWar
FundShieldmatchagainstMortonatHampdenParkon27October1914.However,giventhat
hewasamemberoftheclub,itseemscertainthatheplayedregularlyforoneofQueen’sminor
elevens.
PeterMoodieenlistedasaPrivateintheHighlandLightInfantry,morecommonlyknownatthe
timeastheGlasgowHighlanders,on5September1914.HewasoneofanumberofQueen’s
Parkplayerswhovolunteeredatthattime.HefirstservedinFranceinJanuary1915andwas
commissionedinSeptember1916.
InApril1918,Peterwasinvolvedinanintelligence-gatheringoperationnearPasschendale
inBelgiumthatledtohimbeingawardedtheDistinguishedServiceOrder(DSO).The
announcementoftheawardintheLondonGazetteread“Forconspicuousgallantryanddevotion
todutywhensentwithhiscompanytosupportanotherunit.Heralliedhismenwhowerebeing
drivenin,andalthoughwoundedheldon,stoppingtheenemyadvance.Later,whenoutflanked
andenfiladed,althoughwoundedforthesecondtime,heorganisedanorderlywithdrawal.He
madeanotherstand,andreceivedhisthirdwound.Althoughweakfromlossofblood,hewaited
tillallwasquiet,andhandedoverhiscompany.Hisconductthroughoutwasmagnificent,and
preservedthelinefrombeingbrokenthrough”.
PeterwastreatedataCanadiancasualtyclearingstationforbulletsinhisrighthipandtravelled
toDoveronahospitalshipthreedayslater.HewasdemobbedinMarch1919.
RichardRobinsonreferstoPeterMoodieasaCaptain.However,militaryrecordsdescribehim
asaLieutenant.ItmaybethatRobinsonisincorrect
PeterMoodie’ssonAlastairandgrandsonStephenhaveprovidedinformationabouthis

playedinavarietyofpositionsbutwasbestknownasanoutsideleft.
HarrywascappedthreetimesforScotlandin1909,againstEngland,IrelandandWales.Hewas
onthewinningsideagainstIrelandandWales,scoringinbothmatches.Healsoplayedforthe
ScottishLeagueagainstboththeIrishLeagueandtheEnglishLeagueinthatyearandscoredin

28. Jack ReidTheEveningTimesreportedon2May1917thatSecondLieutenantJackReid“whoplayedregularlywiththeHampdenX1”hadbeen
wounded.Thenewspapersaid“HeisthesonofMr.andMrs.JohnReid,16LevenStreet,Pollokshields,whohavebeenadvisedthathe
islyingseriouslywoundedinhospitalabroad”.
Atfirstglance,itwouldseemthatJackReidwouldhavebeenLieutenantJohnSReidoftheHLI.However,JohnSReidplayedagainst
Heartson25August1917andfiguredinafurther13gamesthatseason.Couldhehaverecoveredfromaseriousinjuryinsuchashort
spaceoftime?Perhapsthiswasthecase.

Parkoveralongnumberofyears.Hisson,also

RalphRiskwasbornin1891intheCathcartareaofGlasgow.He
waseducatedatQueen’sParkandMountFloridaSchoolsbefore

year.In1901,JohnmastermindedTottenhamtoFACupvictory–theonlytimeanon-leaguesidehaswonthetrophy.
JohncontinuedtomanageSpursuntil1907andthenmovedtoDresdeninGermanytocoachDresdnerSC.AttheoutbreakoftheGreat
