Enabler: Triple Helix
Triple Helix is cooperation of:
• Science (knowledge institutes)
• Industry
• Government.

Vision and strategy
The vision and strategy of Brabant is in alignment with that of the Netherlands
and the EU:
• Energy neutral Brabant energy neutral mobility 100% clean vehicles
• The ambition of Brabant is to be energy neutral in 2050
• Sustainable environment the need for a circular economy*)
*) Circular economy: an industrial economy that is producing no waste and pollution (definition from Wikipedia).

Vision of Tony Seba: ‘Clean disruption’
Tony Seba is the author of “Clean Disruption of Energy and Transportation”, and an instructor
in Entrepreneurship, Disruption and Clean Energy at Stanford’s Continuing Studies Program
(www.tonyseba.com).
Disruption: when a new product or service helps create a new market
AND
significantly weaken, transform, or destroy an existing product, market category / industry.
The new tech-based architecture of energy and transportation will consist of distributed, smart, mobile,
connected devices FOR generating, managing, consuming & trading energy.
Relevant examples of such new products/services are: e-vehicles, e-storage, clean e-generation, e-
distribution/smart-grids and self-driving vehicles.11
![Page 12: 19 Oct 2016 - Welcome in Brabant.pdf](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022051319/5877a3311a28abec758b98bf/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Vision of Tony Seba: ‘Clean disruption’
Already happened or expected:
• Laptop Li-on battery costs dropped ~ 14%/year over 15 years, since 2010 ~ 16%/year
(accelerating).
• Tesla expects to increase battery pack capacity by roughly 5%/year.
• Electric motor is 5 x more energy efficient compared to internal combustion engine (ICE).
• 2000+ moving parts in an ICE vehicle compared to 18 moving parts in an electric vehicle (EV).
• EV is 10 to 100 times cheaper to maintain.
The solar disruption:
• ‘God parity’: cost of unsubsidized rooftop solar lower than cost of transmission.
• When god parity? by 2020?12
![Page 13: 19 Oct 2016 - Welcome in Brabant.pdf](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022051319/5877a3311a28abec758b98bf/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)

Trends
• Transition from fossil to zero emission mobility.
• Car-sharing, cars are parked 96% of the time!
• Availability of (more and more) sustainable energy sources.
• Technology for batteries is improving rapidly (more capacity, lower costs).
14
![Page 15: 19 Oct 2016 - Welcome in Brabant.pdf](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022051319/5877a3311a28abec758b98bf/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Needs
• Better batteries:
capacity for long range, reasonable costs, recyclable, lifespan, short duration to
charge.
• Especially in dense populated places, the number of cars needs to go down
(solution: car-sharing)
15
![Page 16: 19 Oct 2016 - Welcome in Brabant.pdf](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022051319/5877a3311a28abec758b98bf/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Needs
• Open standards for charging: in NL e.g. in cooperation with Elaad the possibility to charge each e-
car (at reasonable cost) and have standardized payment.
• It needs to be possible to charge each e-car at any moment everywhere with sustainable
electricity: in Brabant it is planned to have 12000 public charge-points for 100000 cars until 2020.
• Smart-charging, i.e. at moments when durable/sustainable electricity is available.
• Smart grids and storage integration: e.g. by e-cars, in NL planned for 2025 are 1 million e-car to be
operational, these cars have the capacity to store appr. 50% of the needed electricity for the entire
country.
16
![Page 17: 19 Oct 2016 - Welcome in Brabant.pdf](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022051319/5877a3311a28abec758b98bf/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Needs
• Knowledge-sharing, living labs to learn, to prove, to inspire.
• Need for intra-/inter-regional cooperation: e.g. Brabant has partnerships with Region
Baden-Württemberg and Nuremberg Metropolitan Region.
• Involve the consumer: convince, make it easy, show benefits.
• A competitive landscape of e-car manufacturers / suppliers.

The University of Technology in Eindhoven:
• Dutch name is ‘Technische Universiteit Eindhoven‘
• Abbreviated as TU/e
• Founded in June 15th 1956
• TU/e is the second University of Technology in the Netherlands
• The first Dutch University of Technology is in Delft.

Current and new projects
Zero emission public bus transport for South-East Brabant:
• bus-company Hermes
• at the end of 2016 the project will start with 50 e-bus vehicles
• currently vehicles are in final development, early-operations and test program at the
Automotive Campus in Helmond *)
*) The Automotive Campus in Helmond is knowledge center for the Dutch automotive industry:
mainly for smart and green mobility.26
![Page 27: 19 Oct 2016 - Welcome in Brabant.pdf](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022051319/5877a3311a28abec758b98bf/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
Current and new projects
• 2020 in Brabant: 12000 public available charging-points and 100.000 e-car
• Cooperation between province and BMW.
• Pilot for zero emission trucks in city-centers (hybrid, electrical, hydrogen).
• Germany PIB (Partners for International Business):
Working with German partners, Dutch companies are exploiting opportunities in
charging infrastructure, shared-car and shared-bike concepts, and urban distribution
27

Charge-infrastructure by Elaad(Elaad is an initiativ of the Dutch e-networks)
Some examples of current and planned projects:
• Smart Charging and international protocols: ‘synchronize’ international protocols and standards in the communication chain between car and e-network to improve possibilities of Smart Charging (ISO/IEC 51118 and OCPP).
• Local Load Balancing: reduce costs for operation of charging-stations by optimized use/sharing of the available capacity.
• Smart Chain: tests with smart-charging of cars considering local available energy (solar and wind), the needs/demands of the customers, the costs of energy in the (none-balanced) market.
• Flexible costs for charging in Brabant: a test with smart charge subscriptions to charge at moments that energy-costs are low.
• Cross-border charging.
