Welcome to the SoccerHomework.com guide The Ultimate Practice Plan. In this workbook we
will show you a step by step progression to a successful practice. This practice plan is simple and takes the kids through practice in an efficient and effective way.
This Plan Works! Although this is not a specifically recommended plan handed down from the soccer powers that be, I have found that this plan works! I have spent over 18 years developing
and perfecting this process. And without fail, my teams win!
Adjustments. You will want AND need to make adjustments to this plan for your team. That is
good. Make them as needed. Just make sure that any adjustments you make allows for the kids to continue to grow in skill and knowledge of the game. Avoid making adjustments that
only satisfy immediate success. Success in soccer is a marathon of practices played out over time. It is not a sprint just to get a trophy.
The Game is the Perfect Teacher. As much as possible have them playing. The game is a great teacher. Get your coaching in and then let them play!
The Practice is NOT About the Coach. Don’t make the practice a coach show. The practice is for the kids. Keep it that way. Keep your coaching points short and get them playing again as
quickly as possible.

GETTING STARTED
Every Kid MUST Have a Ball. I’m not a huge fan of this but bring a couple extra just in case.
Limit Drills with Lines. Limit Drills with lines where players are waiting for their turn. Just
open a new lane or add another ball. Each and every players should be working the entire practice.
Be Prepared. Have your plan and topic decided in advance. Be ready for the practice. Don’t wing it! Have all your cones, bibs, and goals laid out and ready to start on time.
Summary:
• This Plan Works! - Give it a try.
• Adjustments - You will need to make them for your team.
• The Game is the Perfect Teacher
• The Practice is NOT About the Coach
• Every Kid MUST Have a Ball
• Limit Drills with Lines
• Be Prepared

HERE IT IS:
Sample Practice Process – 90 minutes Team Training:
IMMEDIATE DRILL: Before PracticeWhen players show up to practice they Immediately begin with the ball, no exceptions. This can really be anything - long ball, 1v1 shielding, rondo, shooting, etc. I personally like Rondo the
best. It is easiest for them to jump right into.
START PRACTICE EXACTLY ON TIME
RONDO: 7-10 MINUTESRondo (1 touch only), keep away, monkey in the middle, etc.
MENTAL PREPARATION : 5 MINUTES
Mental practice prep as a team – sell, question, challenge, sell! Talk to them.

THE ULTIMATE PRACTICE PLAN
BALL SKILLS: 15-20 MINUTES
Everyone has a ball, ball skills, efficiency training must include physical component, passive
pressure and limited direct pressure only. NO waiting in lines.
PRACTICE TOPIC: 15-20 MINUTES
Topic. Small side direct pressure 3 or 4 at most. Everyone is engaged and involved. Multiple games or lanes at once, limited to no lines. This is the 1v1’s, 2v2’s, overlapping runs,
defending, etc.
PHASE PLAY: 10-15 MINUTES
Phase play. Make this tactical functional. Work through patterns. Limit patterns to 2-3 per week.
My opinion 4:1 attacking to defending. Must be at least half field always to 1 big goal. Progress to defenders and add counterattack goals.
SCRIMMAGE: 20-30 MINUTES
Play. Everyone plays up to 11v11. Or 3 teams with one rotating in. No subs! Coach on point with your topic. Limited stopping, let them play – only stop play 3 times. Coach individual players
within the scrimmage. If running 3 teams, have the other team that is off playing keep away, rondo, etc. Keep them working also!
