The Madhanandapuram-Moulivakkam junction is a very busy place as it serves as a shortcut for people not
wanting to take the Kundrathur Main Road and Mount-Poonamallee High Road. The junction leads to Madhanandapuram Main Road and this six kilome-tre stretch is used by many to evade traffi c. But the junction has been proving to be tricky to get through as there are no trafi c signals at the place.A traffi c policeman can be seen at random
moments and that does not help make the matter better, say residents.‘Because the Kundrathur Main Road is
wider than a normal street, big vehicles pre-
fer that route. At the junction, two-wheelers and small car owners cut in without waiting for their turn, creating scare for an accident. Despite there being a speed-breaker at
the place, it is not that effective either,’ said Yashwanth of the neighbourhood.‘A signal at the place will do
wonders to contain traffi c fl ow. A small mishap at the junction creates traffi c-snarls till Moulivakkam,’ he added.Despite it being a very busy place, the
junction has been left unattended for years, say residents. Muthu, a tea stall owner, said, ‘Hundreds of people use this way every day. It became famous after the fi rst builiding at Moulivakkam fell and even more
after the second tower was demolished. At least two persons get hurt every day at the junction. Police must take the matter seri-ously and put up a sig-nal there.’Residents alleged
that the widening of the Kundrathur Main Road has created more prob-lems. ‘The work needs to be completed soon and a new road be laid soon,’ they said.

The entrance of Veerabadran Street near Villivakkam-Kolathur subway sparks hygiene concerns right from the word go. ‘The lack of a dustbin here and the subse-quent dumping of garbage on the road stand testimony to this’, says T Rajamani who lives in the street. Public indifference too is one of the major reasons for the current state of affairs. It is alleged that push cart vendors conduct their businesses right next to the strewn garbage. Surprisingly, customers too do not mind buying from them. However, residents whose homes are in close proximity to the waste, are the most af-fected. ‘Little to no effort is be-
ing done to clear the litter’, says a resident Rajendran, pointing to-wards his house, that is marked by the garbage a few feet away from the entrance. This is not all. Night time spells more trouble, as
people are forced to keep their windows shut to
prevent mosquitoes from entering homes. What makes the situation all the more pitiable, is that few mis-creants use the area to answer na-ture’s call at nights. Locals claim that the space is not
visited by any civic authority, who
they feel, must enforce stricter norms to prevent littering in public places. ‘It is because we don’t have such
regulations, that street entrances or corners turn into dumping spots in no time’, notes Muthuraj, another resident.
