IntroductionNew College, University of Toronto offers students the opportunity to take part in a variety of exciting and challenging
International English Programs. The Programs provide customized educational and cultural experiences to students of all
English abilities, from beginner to academic level.
Throughout the Programs, students are immersed in an English environment that provides opportunities to explore Canadian
culture while improving their English and academic skills at Canada’s premier university.

and has a reputation as the safest and cleanest major city in North America.
It is consistently ranked as one of the top ten cities in the world in which
to live and work.
Toronto’s multicultural population, which consists of over 100 language
groups, makes it one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the world. From
“Little Italy” to “Chinatown”, Toronto’s diverse ethnic fabric offers visitors a
unique international experience.
Toronto’s scenic location on the northern shore of Lake Ontario is an ideal
point of departure for visits to other destinations including Niagara Falls, New
York City, Montreal, Ottawa, and Quebec City.

Youth English Programs
General English Program (GEP)Age: 12–14 (Junior), 15–18 (Senior)
Program Length: 3 or 4 Weeks
English Classes: 15 Hours / Week
English Levels: Beginner to Advanced
The General English Program offers daily classes led by professional English teachers that develop all aspects of students’
English abilities. Specifically, classes focus on improving students’ speaking and listening skills through a variety of
communicative activities. Classes also provide students with the opportunity to learn about the cultural sites and historical
places that they will visit while exploring Toronto and experiencing Canadian culture. At the end of the Program, students
receive a personalized evaluation and a certificate of course completion from New College, University of Toronto.
Intensive English Program (IEP)Age: 12–14 (Junior), 15–18 (Senior)
Program Length: 4 Weeks
English Classes: 30 Hours / Week
English Levels: Intermediate to Advanced
The Intensive English Program is a comprehensive course aimed at intermediate and advanced students who want to develop their
English abilities in a focused academic environment. Students improve their speaking and listening skills through a variety of
communicative activities and benefit from an increased focus on conversation, vocabulary expansion, critical reading, and effective
writing skills. With six hours of class each day, students in the Intensive English Program can expect a significant improvement in
their English language abilities. At the end of the Program, students receive a personalized evaluation and a certificate of course
completion from New College, University of Toronto.
TOEFL and Academic Preparation Program (TAPP)Age: 15–18 (Senior)
Program Length: 4 Weeks
Academic Content: 30 Hours / Week
English Levels: High Intermediate to Advanced
The TOEFL and Academic Preparation Program focuses on developing the skills
that are essential for success at an English language university and preparing
students for the TOEFL iBT Test. Students focus on critical reading, oral
presentations, essay writing, and research skills through a combination of
classroom learning and research at the University of Toronto’s libraries. In addition
to regular classroom instruction and TOEFL preparation, students are provided
with critical feedback and academic support through daily one-to-one meetings
with their teacher. At the end of the Program, students receive a certificate of
course completion from New College, University of Toronto and their score on the
TOEFL iBT Complete Practice Test.

Cultural ActivitiesWhen students are not attending class, they participate in activities that
provide an introduction to Canada’s distinct culture and way of life. The
itinerary offers a full range of afternoon activities, evening events, and
weekend trips that allow students to explore Toronto while improving their
conversational English and making new friends from around the world. Cultural
activities are led by enthusiastic Canadian university students who act
as guides and ensure the safety of all students.
Afternoon Activities, which are only offered to students in the General
English Program, include visits to historic and cultural sites mixed with
opportunities to participate in a variety of sporting activities and shop
in the city’s trendiest districts.
Evening Activities offer students the opportunity to visit many of Toronto’s
most popular destinations including the Rogers Centre for a professional
baseball game, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Royal Ontario Museum,
the Toronto Harbourfront, and the world’s tallest freestanding structure—
the CN Tower. Students also enjoy interactive events such as Disco Bowling,
Karaoke, Talent Night, and a boat cruise on Lake Ontario.
Weekend Trips allow students to relax and enjoy Canada’s culture
and geography with trips to Toronto’s Centre Island, Canada’s Wonderland—
one of North America’s premier amusement parks, and an unforgettable boat
ride to the base of Niagara Falls.

New College Residence Students live in the New College Residences which provide a safe and secure environment on the University of Toronto’s
downtown campus. The dormitory style living facilities offer each student a comfortable and air-conditioned single room with
high-speed internet access. Students living in residence have the unique opportunity to learn about different cultures, live with
classmates from around the world, and practice communicating in English.
FoodThe newly renovated Audrey Taylor Dining Hall provides students with a comfortable dining area to enjoy the “all you can eat”
menu. Students can watch as professional chefs prepare their delicious daily entrées in a unique “display style cooking”
kitchen.

English abilities. Classes focus on improving students’ speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills through a variety of
communicative activities including oral presentations, group discussions, writing assignments, and conversation classes. At the
end of the course, students receive a personalized evaluation and a certificate of course completion from New College,
University of Toronto.
Business Foundations Course (BFC) Age: 19+ Years of Age
Course Length: 4 or 8 Weeks
Classes: 15 Hours / Week (Mornings)
English Levels: Intermediate to Advanced
The Business Foundations Course is designed for students who use English in business and professional contexts. Classes prepare
students for the demands of the global business world by focusing on verbal and written communication. Students explore a
variety of communication skills including introductions, conversation strategies, negotiations, participating in meetings, making
presentations, improving grammatical accuracy, writing effective emails, and using appropriate tone in business correspondence.
At the end of the course, students receive a personalized evaluation and a certificate of course completion from New College,
University of Toronto.

certificate of course completion from New College, University of Toronto.

The Speaking and Pronunciation Course uses a wide variety of classroom activities to improve each student’s ability to
communicate in English. Specifically, classes concentrate on developing students’ pronunciation, listening, and conversation skills.
Students also practice delivering oral presentations and participating in group discussions and debates. At the end of the course,
students receive a personalized evaluation and a certificate of course completion from New College, University of Toronto.
TOEIC Preparation Course (TCPC)Age: 19+ Years of Age
Course Length: 4 or 8 Weeks
Classes: 10 Hours / Week (Afternoons)
English Levels: Intermediate to Advanced
The TOEIC Preparation Course is designed for intermediate and advanced students who use English in professional contexts and
want to take the TOEIC Test during their stay at the University of Toronto. Throughout the course, students learn test taking
strategies and develop the skills that are necessary to be successful on the TOEIC Test. At the end of the course, students take the
official TOEIC Test at New College, University of Toronto, an ETS certified TOEIC testing site, and receive an official TOEIC Certificate
with their test scores.
TOEFL Preparation Course (TFPC)Age: 19+ Years of Age
Course Length: 4 or 8 Weeks
Classes: 10 Hours / Week (Afternoons)
English Levels: Intermediate to Advanced
The TOEFL Preparation Course is designed for intermediate and advanced students who plan to study in an English speaking country
and want to prepare for the TOEFL iBT Test during their stay at the University of Toronto. Throughout the course, students learn test
taking strategies and develop the skills that are necessary to be successful on the TOEFL iBT Test. At the end of the course, students
take the TOEFL iBT Complete Practice Test and receive their practice test scores.

Cultural ActivitiesA variety of afternoon activities, evening events and weekend trips, organized by International English Programs staff, provide
an ideal introduction to the city of Toronto and Canada’s distinct culture. From Toronto’s many distinguished art galleries and
museums, to its fashionable shopping districts and eclectic nightlife, the city’s diversity makes Toronto an ideal destination for
international visitors.
Afternoon and Evening Events include opportunities to attend world-class theatrical and musical performances, explore
Toronto’s vibrant ethnic neighborhoods and shop in the city’s trendiest areas.
Students also experience some of Toronto’s most popular events including an outdoor cultural festival at Toronto’s Harbourfront
Centre, a professional baseball game at the Rogers Centre, horse racing at Woodbine Racetrack, and a trip to the top of the
world’s tallest freestanding structure—the CN Tower.
Weekend Trips allow students to relax and enjoy Canada’s culture and geography with a trip to Toronto’s Centre Island; a visit to
“Niagara-on-the-Lake”—a beautiful historic town in Canada’s premier wine producing region; and an unforgettable boat ride to
the base of Niagara Falls.
Students are also encouraged to join guided tours of French Canada and New York City. The French Canada Tour explores the
cradle of French civilization in North America through visits to Montreal and Quebec City, while the New York City Tour offers a
distinctly American experience that includes trips to Broadway, Central Park, Times Square, SoHo, Greenwich Village, Fifth
Avenue, and the Empire State Building.

Accommodation During the summer months, students can live in the safe and secure environment of the dormitory-style New College Residence
on the University of Toronto’s downtown campus. The residence is located in the centre of Toronto, walking distance from most
of Toronto’s major tourist attractions. Each student is offered a comfortable and air-conditioned single room with high-speed
internet access. Living in residence provides students with a unique opportunity to learn about different cultures, live with their
classmates from around the world, and practice speaking English.

Customized English Programs
Customized English Programs are developed to meet the specific educational and lifestyle
needs of a wide variety of international groups including English language teachers,
prospective immigrants, high school students, undergraduate and graduate students, industry
and health professionals, executives, and businesspersons.
Academic Content Program Length: 2–12 weeks
Academic Content: Individually Developed
Minimum Group Size: 25 students
Each Program’s academic content is individually designed to address the group’s unique
professional and educational contexts. Students develop their overall English abilities with a
strong concentration on industry-specific language and communication skills. From academic
enrichment to training for professional practice, the Customized English Programs allow groups to
improve their English in a relevant and exclusive environment.
Accommodation The city of Toronto offers international travelers a wide variety of choices for accommodation.
From the prestige of five star hotels to the intimate experience of homestays with Canadian
families, groups taking part in a Customized English Program will find a living situation that
complements their needs.
Cultural ActivitiesA unique cultural activities schedule is developed for each Customized English Program.
Events may include a variety of afternoon visits, evening events, and weekend trips that are
organized by International English Programs staff.
Toronto offers visitors world-class theatrical and musical performances, distinguished art
galleries and museums, North America’s third largest stock exchange, major professional
sports franchises, vibrant ethnic neighbourhoods, trendy shopping districts, an eclectic
nightlife, the world’s tallest freestanding structure—the CN Tower, and Niagara Falls.
In addition to events around Toronto, groups are encouraged to take trips to other
destinations that are close to Toronto including Montreal, Ottawa, and Quebec City,
and New York City.
