ANNUAL REPORT
WE’RE HERE FORYOU
YMCA OF GREENWICH
May 2011
Dear YMCA Members & Friends,
2010 brought a great deal of transformation to our beloved YMCA. While our renovation project remained on hold for the duration of the year, there was a tremendous amount of activity happening behind the scenes to brighten our institution’s future.
First and foremost, at the writing of this letter, we are proud to report we have a balanced operating budget for 2011, thanks to significant cost reductions and modest revenue increases. This budget is the first step to completing the renovation at the Y. With a completed facility we can then substantially grow membership and enhance our programs by adding two new locker rooms, a warm water pool and valuable additional programmable space. With these enhancements, we believe we will be able to support a financially stable institution.
Construction was not our only focus during the year. In 2010, we also launched a totally new YMCA website. From a email alert system to a real-time member feedback loop, our new site is far more user-friendly and efficient. We also joined with Y’s across the globe and unveiled the friendlier, brighter new Y logo.
In the spring, we hosted our annual Healthy Kids Day which brought more than 300 parents and kids to the Y for arts and crafts, swimming, face painting and fun. In the summer, we opened our building for all ages to come take the President’s Fitness Test as part of our All American Fun & Fit Challenge.
In the fall, we hosted our 16th Annual Golf Outing at the Tamarack Country Club. Generously supported by Jim Ferraro in memory of his late father Lou, the outing raised more than $100,000 to support operations at our Y!
In October, our three aquatics teams participated in our first Overnight Splash fundraiser which raised more than $60,000! And in the winter, we hosted more than 600 students from Greenwich Public Schools as they took the President’s Fitness Test right here at the Y!
Our state-of-the-art Wellness Center is a hive of activity each and every day of the week. Our group wellness classes continue to grow with Zumba reigning supreme as the most popular offering. Our three aquatics teams continue to make headlines and our swim school is experiencing unprecedented growth. All in all, 2010 was a year that brought exceptional growth to our YMCA. We are grateful to have the dedicated support of our members, staff and friends and we look forward to a strong and positive 2011!
We are grateful to have the dedicated support of our members, staff and friends and we look forward to a strong and positive 2011!
Sincerely,

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
We believe that children and teens deserve to have
support from the entire community as they seek to reach
their own personal best. Here at the Y, we are helping
them gain the confidence and character they’ll need
throughout their lives by providing exciting programming
and healthy living initiatives.
2010 HIGHLIGHTS
We helped dozens of kids gain confidence and have
fun in our successful youth programs like fencing,
t-ball, basketball, golf and musical munchkins.
We provided hundreds of youngsters with a safe and
nurturing environment at our childcare and child
watch facilities helping them learn, grow and have fun.
We helped more than 600 fourth graders in town

President’s Physical Fitness Test – at no charge to
their families or the district.
HEALTHY LIVING
In August, we unveiled a new and improved spin studio
with 17 brand new, state-of-the-art spin bikes.
Our group wellness classes, like Zumba and Body Barre,
continued to thrive, attracting new members, young
and old.
Our top notch personal trainers helped dozens reach
and surpass their personal fitness goals!
In the summer, we opened our doors to the entire
community to challenge themselves and gauge their
own physical fitness by taking the President’s Physical
Fitness Test right here at the Y.
HEALTHY LIVING
As a Y, we believe healthy living involves much more than
working out. By providing a warm, close-knit community
of friends and peers, we believe we enhance the traditional

We stood by our military, providing hundreds of hours of
access to our pool and gym to those training for the U.S.
Navy SEALS program .
We continue to provide thousands of dollars in financial

2010 HIGHLIGHTS
YEAR IN REVIEW
JANUARY
Annual CampaignIn January, we kicked off our 2010 Annual Campaign with a bang courtesy of a one-time contribution of $308,000 to support the Y. In total, the 2010 Annual Campaign brought in more than XXXX.
APRIL
Healthy Kids DayIn April, we hosted our annual Healthy Kids Day. Hundreds of kids and families came to the Y to swim in our pool, have their faces painted, jump on our Bouncy Castle and play with their friends. The Greenwich Fire Department and EMS also joined in on the fun letting kids explore the trucks and learn more about how they help keep the town safe. The Y hosts the free event each year to welcome current members and the community at-large to experience the facility in a fun, family-friendly setting.
ZumbathonAlso in April, nearly 70 Zumba enthusiasts danced away for more than 6 hours in our gymnasium for the first Zumbathon. Participants raised more than $6,000 to support Group Wellness programs at the Y.
JUNE
All American Fun & Fit ChallengeIn June, we opened our doors for the inaugural All American Fun & Fit Challenge. Modeled after the Presidential Fitness Test, the AAFF put participants through the gauntlet; a series of physical challenges to test strength, speed, endurance and stamina. We also leveraged our existing partnership with the U.S. Navy SEALS to offer the SEALS physical fitness test to those over the age of 16. The SEALS test included swimming, running, sit-up’s, pull-up’s and push-up’s. In June, we became the first YMCA in the country to offer its own version of the Presidential Fitness Test.
JULY
Stewie the DuckIn July, the Y welcomed Mr. & Mrs. Stew Leonard, Jr. and Stewie the Duck for an important lesson water safety in the Y’s natatorium. Stewie joined Mr. & Mrs. Leonard reading from the nationally renowned book “Stewie the Duck Learns to Swim.” Stewie also helped teach the kids a special song about water safety.
AUGUST
New Spin StudioIn August, the YMCA hosted a ribbon cutting on its newly revamped spin studio featuring 17 brand new, state-of-the-art spin bikes. The bikes were purchased with the help of the generous support of our members and friends – including a $12,000 grant from the ABILIS Community Foundation. ABILIS is a non-profit community organization that supports the needs of people of all ages with developmental disabilities and many ABILIS clients participate in spinning programs at the Y.
SEPTEMBER
16th Annual Golf OutingIn September, the Y hosted its 16th annual golf outing. Generously sponsored by Jim Ferraro in memory of his father and longtime YMCA member, Lou, the outing raised more than $100,000 to support the Y. Despite the heavy rains at this year’s outing, golfers had fun and enjoyed cocktails, dinner and a live and silent auction at the Tamarack Country Club. This year’s outing also paid a special tribute to the Old Timers Athletic Association of Greenwich for their years of commitment to athletics and the development of good sportsmanship in town.
OCTOBER
Overnight SplashIn October, all three aquatics teams participated in the first-ever Overnight Splash fundraiser. The kids raised more than $60,000 to support the Y. As a reward, the kids were invited to stayed at the Y until the wee hours of the morning swimming, playing games and dunking their coaches and lifeguards in the dunk tank!
DECEMBER
President’s Fitness TestIn December, with the support of the President’s Council on Physical Fitness, we launched an unprecedented partnership with the Greenwich Public Schools. Throughout the month of December, we administered the President’s Fitness Test to more than 600 fourth graders from 10 of the 11 public schools in town giving students the chance to check their physical fitness against the standards set by the President’s Council. The test included six events: the Shuttle Run, Pull-Up’s/Flexed Arm Hang, Sit-Up’s/Curl-Up’s, Push-Up’s, Pacer Test and the Sit & Reach. It was all done at no cost to Greenwich Public Schools or the participating students and their families.
