A Message from the President The great thing about young people is that they always have their eyes on the future, and inevitably that future is full of hope and promise. Bright futures are what we’re about at the Buffalo Public Schools Foundation. The Foundation’s mission is to ensure that all students in the district have access to excellent academic, arts and athletic programs and facilities and to provide scholarships as appropriate by raising and allocating community dollars for these purposes. To meet the changing needs in our community, time was spent this year looking into the future of the Foundation. One area of emphasis is to ensure a sustainable foundation that continues to enhance the education experience of all of our students now and into the future. To that end, we invested in the addition of an Executive Director to focus on the growth of the organization. Through these pages, I’m proud to share the many new initiatives we created for the students in our district. These programs focused on the disciplines of structure, organization and teamwork delivered through fine arts and athletic programs. We set the groundwork for higher education, with a focus on preparing our students to compete in the future global market and providing scholarships that make the dream of secondary education a reality. Our students will change the face of our community’s workforce. Preparing Students for Tomorrow’s World:
Students Study Visit to China
Select high school students and teachers participated in a study trip to China. The purpose of this was to best prepare our students to compete in the future global market. Objectives for this journey were to promote a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Chinese culture, provide students enrolled in Mandarin Studies the opportunity to develop proficiency with the language, to encourage motivated students to pursue Asian studies and international coursework at a college level and to connect students to Buffalo-based businesses that have established relationships with China.
Gap Financial Assistance Scholarships
Students in our school system often do not pursue higher education due to the associated costs. However, the current economic climate has created a need for a more skilled and educated workforce. The Buffalo Public Schools Foundation is funding five, two-year scholarships to Erie Community College. Students receive funding for all expenses which include, but are not limited to, full tuition, books, transportation and child care.
“Experience China” Summer Camp
This Chinese immersion day camp was open to middle grade students and involved instruction from the University at Buffalo’s Confucius Institute. This one week camp was designed to serve as an introduction to Asian studies. Students gained exposure to many aspects of Asian culture, learned basic Mandarin phrases, Chinese calligraphy (yìshù ) and prepared a final project based on their favorite aspect of the Chinese culture. Plans for this program include the participation of Chinese exchange students from Luo Yang Foreign Middle School to be hosted by district families.
Presenting the Possibilities: Middle School Music Camp
This middle school camp provided advanced instruction to music students in grades 5-8 and served over 200 children. Band, choral and orchestral ensembles were offered instruction in both large and small groups. Students learned the unique characteristics of their instrument or voice range. Students also participated in music theory instruction and enrichment activities such as art and swimming.
All-City Marching Band Camp
The All-City Marching Band is comprised of students from schools throughout the district. This one week camp assisted students in gaining a further understanding of the technical aspects pertaining to their instruments. Band members gained the skills of working with fellow students in an ensemble atmos-phere, responding to vocal commands and familiarization with conducting patterns. Both large and small group instruction were provided specific to each student’s instrument and marching drill. City Dance Summer Camp
This camp offered children the experience of artistic training, including ballet technique, modern dance and choreography. Activities and discussions in conditioning, nutrition, and injury prevention complemented the two weeks of dance instruction. Each dancer received individual feedback to improve artistic and technical development. The two weeks of instruction and rehearsal culminated in a closing presentation that showcased each dancer’s talents. High School College Art Portfolio and Interview Preparation
Students developed and compiled strong artwork that will meet and exceed the portfolio review guidelines put forth by various higher education institutions. Curriculum included labeling and keeping work safe and developing effective written artist statements about each piece. Mock interview and role play sessions were held to provide students the opportunity to practice answering questions and develop presentation skills.
Getting our Students in the Game: Summer Lacrosse Camp
This camp was used as a primary program to introduce the Buffalo Public School’s Students (boys and girls) to the sport of Lacrosse. As interest grows the focus will be to incorporate this sport into the Buffalo Public Schools as a club level sport. The program strives to inspire positive growth and development in a child’s character. Each facet of the game was covered, teaching the fundamentals and skills to become a valuable team player. Summer Soccer Camp
By enriching and elevating the Interscholastic Soccer Program in the Buffalo Public Schools, we can increase the opportunities for student–athletes to play competitively at the interscholastic and intercollegiate levels. With the assistance of the Delaware Soccer Club, the Buffalo Public Schools Foundation provided boys and girls in the district the opportunity to develop good physical health, positive levels of self esteem, confidence, and core ethical princi-ples in a safe, enjoyable environment. Instruction included rules of the game, ball handling technique and team build-ing. It is the district’s long term goal to invest funds to sup-port a Junior Varsity team.
