OUR EDUCATIONAL PLANNING
2010wasthefinalyearoftheCollege’sStrategicEducationPlan2005-2010.Progresswasmadeduringthefiveyearsinenhancingteachingandlearning,developingfurtherprogramsandofferinggreaterchoice,diversifyingthepathwaysavailabletostudentsandmakingtheschool’seducationalofferingmorerelevantandresponsivetoindividualneedsgenerally.

A set of 6 Core Commitments was also agreed on to define what the College stands for educationally:

STRATEGIC EDUCATION PLAN MEASUREMENT SURVEYS
Parents,teachersandstudentsweresurveyedabouttheimplementationoftheStrategicEducationPlanin2010.Thereweremanypositiveresultsbutthemajorconcernsexpressedbyparentsrelatedto(i)communicationwithteachersand(ii)supportfortheindividualneedsoftheirchildren.TherewasalsoconcernaboutthelevelofstudentengagementinYears9and10whichwillcontinuetobeafocus.Ontheotherhand,studentsinYear7wereseentobemoreengagedthanwhenlastsurveyed.AmarkedincreaseincomputerusebystudentsinSeniorSchoolwasalsorevealedinthesurvey.SpecificsubjectdatahasbeenprovidedtoHeadsofDepartmentsothattheycanworkontheirimplicationswiththeirteachers.
STRATEGIC EDUCATION PLAN 2011–2015
ExtensiveconsultationforthenewStrategicEducationPlantookplacewithCouncil,staffandparentassociationsoveratwelvemonthperiodfromlate2009tolate2010.AsetofEducationalPrioritiesforthenextfiveyearswasdevelopedusingUNESCO’sframeworkforeducationinthe21stcentury:Learning to Know, Learning to Do, Learning to Be, Learning to Live with Others.Theseprioritieswerethenfleshedoutinasectioncalled“Elaborations”.

Withinacaringandsafeenvironment,theCollegeiscommittedtohighacademicstandardsandtheall-roundfulfillmentofitsstudents.
TheCollege’sgenderratiowas55%malestudents:45%femalestudentsfromPreptoYear12.
Outof150studentsinYear9(2007),21studentsdidnotcontinuetoYear12(2010).Hence86%oftheYear9cohortof2007wasretainedtoYear12in2010.
TheaveragestudentattendanceratefromPreptoYear12was96%during2010.
Inadditiontothestudents’broadcurriculumofferings,Years7to12studentsparticipatedinthecompulsory(APS)sportsprogram,whichissupportedbyexpertcoaches.13sportsandarangeofothersportingopportunities(egequestrian,underwaterhockey,surfing)wereavailabletostudents.
AcrosstheCollege,therewerearound550individualinstrumentallessonsandgrouptheorytuitionsessionseachweek.Approximately430studentsparticipatedinensemblesfromCampbellHousethroughtoSeniorSchool.

IntheSeniorSchool(Years9to12),theattendanceofeachstudentisrecordedforeachtimetabledlesson.InthePreparatorySchool(PreptoYear8),theattendanceofeachstudentisrecordedtwicedaily,duringmorninghomeroomandfollowingthelunchbreak.Teachersmonitorstudents’absencesacrosstheterm/year.Ifastudentisabsentfromschoolbecauseofillnessoranyotherreason,parents/carersaredirectedtocontacttheappropriatecampus.Ifthereisanunexplainedabsence,aphonecalltotheparent/carerismadetodeterminethewhereaboutsofthechild.

OUR STAFF
Collegeteachersattended98%ofthetimeonaveragein2010.90%ofthe2009teacherswereretainedinto2010andallwereVITregistered.AcrosstheCollege,thepupil-teacherratioisasfollows:10studentsto1teacher.
Thehighlevelsofstaffinvolvementincamps,internationaltrips,GeelongCollegeChallenge,Year9Cityprograms,Year10FulfillingLivesprograms,OpenDayandYearleveldinnersdemonstratedaverycommittedstaff.
TheCollegespent$241,732onprofessionaldevelopmentwithanaverageof$1,998spentperteacher(FTE)thislastyear.11teacherscompletedtheirMastersofEducationalStudiesatBallaratUniversityin2010(withanotherawardedaMasterdegreefromMelbourneUniversity).Afurther8havecommittedtoaMasterdegreeprogramin2011/12andthreeotherswillbeginaPhD.
OUR PARENTS
Regularcommunicationwithparentsthroughouttheyearfeaturedaparentbulletindistributedonceaweek(PreparatorySchool)andonceafortnight(SeniorSchool),aPrincipal’sNewsletterthreetimesayearandtheschoolmagazine(AdAstra)twiceayear.
Ourparents’willingnesstobeinvolvedintwoparentassociations(meetingonceamonth),the12supportgroupscoveringsports,artsandboarding(whichmeetregularly)andthehighattendanceatYearleveldinnersisclearevidenceofakeenanddedicatedparentbody.Duringenrolmentinterviews,thegoodreputationoftheCollegethroughoutthecommunityisregularlyreportedandisborneoutinincreasingstudentenrolmentsovertime.

SUSTAINABILITY
During2010,theCollegeEnvironmentalTaskforcefocusseditsattentiononimprovingwaterharvestingandusereduction,whichincludedananalysisofplantspeciestoassistwiththeseobjectives.Investigationintotheeffectsofferalfaunawasalsopursued,aswasenvironmentallyfriendlymasterplanningatthePreparatorySchool.TheinstallationofsolarpanelsontheRollandCentreroofatSeniorSchoolwascompletedduringSemester1,allowingfor‘clean’generatedpowertobefedintothegridviatheRecreationCentrehub.Furtherplanningforthepotentialpurchaseofcarbon‘offsets’relatedtotheairtransportcomponentofCollegetripswasalsoundertaken.

CURRICULUM
WRITING LITERACIES ACROSS THE COLLEGE
In2009,primaryteachersfocusedondeepeningtheirknowledgeaboutwritingliteracies.2010thensawtheimplementationofWriter’s NotebookculminatinginThe Writer’s Gift(primarystudentschoosingtheirbestpiecesofwritingtogivetotheirparentsattheendoftheyear).BothprimaryandsecondarystudentsworkedonvocabularyextensionandspellingaccuracythroughWords their Way,aprogramintroducedbyaspecialistconsultantwhoworkedinbothschools.GrammarandpunctuationhavebeenexplicitlytaughtinYears3to10inlinewiththeAustralianCurriculum.
LITERACY ACROSS THE CURRICULUM
AgroupofsecondaryteachersfromdifferentsubjectareasdevelopedresourceswhichwillbedistributedtoYears7to10studentsin2011.AteacherliteracyhandbookhasalsobeendevelopedforteachersofMathematics,History,Science,ArtandEnglishandwillbeimplementedin2011.
‘WAYS OF SEEING’
Ways of Seeing,whichexploresthephilosophyofknowledgebehindsubjectsanddealswithlogicandethics,wasofferedoptionallyforthefirsttimetoYear11studentsin2010.Asimilarnumberwillstudythesubjectin2011.
CAREERS COUNSELLING
AsurveyofthenewCareersprogramconductedin2010,revealedthatparentsappreciatedtheup-to-dateexpertisethatRegan ConsultingbroughttoCareersbutrequestedsomeeveninginterviewsandacasemanagementapproach.TheschoolhasalsoaddressedtheneedsofLearningSupportstudentsandthoseseekingtodolocalTAFEcourses.TheCareerbreakfastshavebeenreplacedwithtransitioneveningsfocusingonparticularareasofinterestandincludingpaststudentspresentlytakingcoursesatUniversity/TAFE.ThreehighlightsweretheGAPeveninginFebruary,theUMATeveninginMayandtheResidentialCourselunchtimesessioninAugust.
VCE TIMETABLE CHANGES
Thetimetableblockingsystemchangedin2010sothatYear12studentscouldhave8periodspercycleforeachsubject.Thisextratimewasmuchappreciated.Asaconsequence,Year11studentscanonlytake6subjectsinsteadof7andhavesupervisedstudyperiodsinstead.
ASSESSMENT SCHEDULES, MODERATION AND STUDENT EVALUATIONS
Alldepartmentscompletedanassessmentscheduleoutliningtheirmainassessmentsandundertooksomemoderationoffinalworkpiecesin2010.Someunitevaluationwasalsoundertakenbystudents,whichwillbeextendedin2011.
SUBJECT REVIEWS
ReviewsofScienceandLOTEaswellasoftheMultimediaandEnviroprogramswereconductedin2010.During2011,theSecondaryScienceCoordinatorsarecurrentlyformulatingaplantoimplementtherecommendationsandanacademicfromMelbourneUniversitywillworkwithprimaryteachersonPrimaryScience.TheLOTEReviewrecommendedanAccelerativeIntegratedMethodology(AIM)programbeadopted.DevelopedinitiallyinCanada,AIMusesactionandgesturesandimmersivelanguageexperiencestoprovidealanguagecontextleadingtotherapidacquisitionofthesecondlanguage.TheimplementationofrecommendationsfromtheMultimediaandEnviroreportswilltakeplacein2011.VariousArtReviewrecommendationscontinuetobeworkedthroughincludingparticularworkin2011intheareaofliteracyacquisition.
RESTRUCTURE OF MIDDLE SCHOOL LIBRARY
PlanningfortherestructureoftheHelenMackielibrarytookplacein2010.Theschoolisinvestigatinghowthelibrarycanusetechnologyinmoreinnovativewaysandhowbettertofocusonliteracythroughfictionandnon-fictiontexts.Thedetailedworkingoutofthisnewstructurewillcontinueover2011andwillbeimplementedfrom2012.
COEDUCATION WORKING PARTY
During2010,aCoeducationWorkingPartycoordinatedbyProfessorGeorginaTsolidisfromBallaratUniversitycollecteddatafromthewholeCollegecommunity,includingalumniandparents,aboutcoeducation.TherangeofperspectivesthathasemergedhasbeenincorporatedintoareportbyProfessorTsolidis.Manyusefulrecommendationshavebeenmadebutthecentralneedistodevelopapolicyoncoeducationwhichwillguidefuturedevelopments.

THE EXEMPLARY TEACHER CLASS
ExemplaryTeacherawardsweremadetothreeteachersduring2010.Eachteacherisnowrequiredtodevelopalearningprojectintheirclassroomaspartoftheawardcriteria.Projectsinclude:investigatingreflectivelearning;exploringtransitionfromtheELCtoPrepGradeandworkingondevelopingstoriesthroughdanceandmusic.TheCollegewasassistedinthisprocessbyDrSallyGodhino(MelbourneUniversity).
TEACHER AND HEAD OF DEPARTMENT APPRAISAL
HalfoftheteachingstaffwasappraisedbytheirHeadsofDepartmentlastyearandtheotherhalfwillbeappraisedin2011(whenHeadsofDepartmentwillalsobeappraised).Afterthishasbeencompleted,theschoolwillconductareviewtoensurethattheprocessissupportingtheprofessionallearningofteacherseffectively.
LITERACY AND NUMERACY BENCHMARKS
ThetablebelowoutlinesthepercentagesofstudentsinYears3,5,7and9meetingthenationalminimumstandardinreading,writing,numeracy,grammarandpunctuationandspellingarebasedontheNAPLANtestresults(anationalleveltest).
NAPLANtestingbroughtthekindofscrutinynormallyreservedfortheVCEintotherestoftheCollege.NAPLANcommittees,ledbyHeadsofSchool,developedandintroducedarangeofinitiativesandactivitiesinthecourseoftheyear.TheNAPLANresultsforeachclasstobeplacedonCurriculumNavigatorwillenableteacherstobetterplantheirclasses.

CYBER SAFETY
TheYears9to11DigitalChallengehaditsexcitinginauguralyearin2010.ItfeaturedadifferentapproachtoCyberSafety,basedonviralmarketing.EachoftheHousesproducedinterestingvideos,gamesandpresentations.Theexercisewashighlyeffectiveanddemonstratedthat‘doing’CyberSafetyisamuchbettertactictogetthemessageacrosstostudentsthan‘telling’themaboutit.
STUDENT WELL-BEING
RESILIENCE
TheBounceBackprogramwasadoptedthroughoutthePreparatorySchoolin2010andhasbeensuccessfullyembeddedinthecurriculum.Itaimstogivestudentsstrategiestobecomemoreresilientwhenfacedwithpersonalissues.AstrongerstudentvoiceisalsodevelopinginYears9and10throughtheSRCanditsnewlyformedconnectionswiththeYear12Advisorycommittee.Connect7,Senior8,Years9and10SRChavealldevelopedsignificantlyoverthelifetimeoftheStrategicPlan,aswellastheConnectandCollabor8ProgramsatYears7and8,enablingstudentvoicestobeheardandactedupon.
GOOD CHOICES
AstudentcreedcalledGood ChoiceswasdevelopedafterextensiveinputfromthestudentbodyintheSeniorSchool.Alistof10simpleguidingstatementswasagreedontoencouragestudentstobemorereflectiveintheirdecision-makingandtothinkabouttheconsequencesoftheiractionsbothonthemselvesandothers.
CURRENT AFFAIRS
DesignedtobroadenourYear12students’experiences,aCurrentAffairsprogramprovidedopportunitiestohearfromarangeofinfluentialpeople.Expertpresentersin2010were:Tammy Van Wisse – motivational speaker and marathon swimmer; Les Twentyman – highly respected youth worker based in the Melbourne’s western suburbs; Pippa Howard – Green Architect; RACV on preparing for driving; The Blood Bank on becoming a blood donor ; James Lynch – How to prepare for interviews ; Paul Dillon – Leading Expert on Drug and Alcohol use in young people; Dr. Daniel O’Brien – Medecins sans Frontieres and Peter Roberts, local identity who left a successful business to take up Harp playing to patients at a local hospital.

CAMPS

• Year 5:a3daycamptoBaanyaBiamiintheBrisbaneRangeswithafocusonsocialskillsandcooperation.Abseiling,initiatives,teamgamesandadventureactivitieswerepartoftheprogram.

• Denmark Australian Rules Football Tour:3staffaccompanied27studentswhoplayedfootballandparticipatedinaculturaltourofDenmark.
• Volcanoes and Glaciers:15studentsand3teacherstouredthenorthandsouthislandsofNewZealandtostudythecountry’svolcanoesandglaciersandhikingtothecraterlakeonMtRuapehu.
