social Media: the Newest Final Frontier (at least for now)

Aroundouroffice,theseconddayofthe2011ChicagoAutoShowMediaPreviewisgettingalotofaction.We’veputtogetheraplanthatisalreadycreatingbuzzandgettinganewlyinfluentialcrowdthroughthedoorsoftheChicagoAutoShow.SowhileJohannesGutenbergmayhavechangedtheworldwiththeprintingpressandHenryFordmayhavehelpedpushsocietyintoanewageofproduction,the2011ChicagoAutoShowknowsonethingiscertain:SocialMediaisadefiniteforcetobereckonedwith,andwewanttohelpmakesurethisinteractivegameisonetheautoindustrycanwin. BeforetheThursdaynightstarsstarttwinklingoverFirstLookforCharity,manufacturershavebeengiventheopportunitytoinvitealimitednumberofthisnewbreedofmediatomaketheworldofaglobalautoshowstheiroyster—andeachmanufacturercandefineitsowndestinyviathesenewrelationships. “Eachmanufacturerhasspecificgroupsthatareimportanttoitandhavebeenwell-definedbytheirexistingsocialmediadepartments,”saidChicagoAutoShowGeneralManagerDaveSloan.“Whatwewanttodoisopenupourshowasagiantcontentproviderforthem.Somemightwanttoaddresssafetyinfluencers,whileothersareintodesign,style,motorsport,futurefuels,whatever!We’releavingituptoeveryonetoidentifythosewhoinfluenceothersandinvitethemtotheshow,wherewewillprovidethemwithcredentials.Therest,astheysay,willplayoutasitplaysout.Wethinkit’sanexcitingidea,andweknowwe’renotalone.”

FrommomsonTwittertoenvironmentalbloggerstothosewithbigFacebookfollowings,theseguestswillbegivenanunprecedentedpreviewofthe2011ChicagoAutoShow.Whilethegroupwillbelarge,thebeautyisthateachmanufacturerwillgettoengagewithitsshort-listedguestsinperson.

“Someofourmanufacturersreally‘getthis’andarereadytoexploitittotheirfulladvantage,”saidChicagoAutoShowChairmanKevinMize.“We’rereadytoworkwithallofourexhibitorstonotonlyusethisdaytomaximizetheirmediapreviewefforts,butalsotosetthestageforusingthosesameavenuesofcontactforthe10-daypublicrunoftheshow.Afterall,oncethemedialeavetown,there’sthis

incredibleshowthatmovespeoplefromMcCormickPlacetodealerships.Andthat’swhatautoshowsaretrulyallabout.” Operationally,here’showitwillwork:TheCATAwillprovideeachexhibitingmanufacturerauniqueURLtoincludeinitsinvitations.Thoseinvited—upto300perbrand—willbeaskedtoregisterwiththeChicagoAutoShowthroughthatlinkandtoprintouttheir2011

“ticket.”Inthiscase,theticket/credentialwillbeatwo-sidedbadgethatgrantsunlimitedaccesstotheshowfloor—withtheinvitingmanufacturer’snameprintedontheback.Attheshow’sentry,thoseinvitedwillberequiredtopresentaphotoIDtoensuretheyare,infact,thepersonwhowasinvited(muchliketraditionalmediamembers). Asmentionedabove,thiscredentialwillalsohavethe

invitedmediaforthisprogramhavebeenidentifiedbyshoworganizersviaresearchingofalargegroupofmanufacturers.Theyhaverankedmediaoridentifiedpotentialguestsasstrongautomotiveinfluencersinthesocialmedia. “Wethenassemblealistofthosewhoappearrepeatedlyasbeingimportantintheeyesofthemanufacturersandstartsendingoutinvitations,”saidChicagoAutoShowGeneralManagerDaveSloan.“Theactualarrangementsaremadebyourcontractor,G.SchmitzandAssoc.,forprogramimplementation.”AllinquiriesabouttheplanshouldgothroughourChicagoAutoShowoffice,notthroughNissanorG.Schmitz. JonathanBrowning,presidentandCEO,VolkswagenofAmerica,Inc.willbethefeaturedspeakeroftheFebruarymeetingoftheprestigiousEconomicClubofChicago(ECC)luncheon,Feb.9,2011atMcCormickPlace.
