ComMission Possible 3 (2013)
We are so excited to begin a new commission with another world-renown composer!! Michael Sweeney is a well-known and respected Wisconsin composer and educator. He will begin composing music for our current 7th grade band in a few weeks.
We are very close to funding this project, however dona-tions are still needed. If you wish to contribute to this pro-ject, please either purchase a PMMS Band Lapel Pin ($2.50 each) or consider giving a donation (just put “Commission Possible 3” in the memo line if writing a check).
Mr. Sweeney will be at our Spring Concert on May 14, 2013 to conduct the world premiere on the new band piece along with other selections. Mark you calendars now!!
M i ch a e l S we en e y (b. 1952) is a graduate of Indiana University
(Bloomington) where he studied music education. In addition, he studied com-position with Bernard Heiden, John Eaton and Donald Erb. Mr. Sweeney taught five years in the public schools of Ohio and Indiana, where his teaching experience included working with successful concert, jazz and marching pro-grams at all levels from elementary to high school.
Since 1982, he has worked full time for HAL LEONARD CORPORATION in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, one of the largest publishers of printed music in the world. In his present position as Director of Band Publications, Mr. Sweeney is directly responsible for the development, production, recording and marketing of new publications for school bands. In addition, he contributes as a composer and arranger in all instrumental areas. Michael is particularly known for his writ-ing at the younger levels for concert band and jazz. Since 1982, Hal Leonard has published over 500 of his compositions and arrangements. His works appear on numerous state contest lists and his music is regularly performed throughout the world.
A winner of multiple ASCAP awards, his "Ancient Voices" (1994) and "Imperium" (1992) are featured in the acclaimed "Teaching Music Through Per-formance" series by GIA Publications. Other compositions such as "Black For-est Overture" (1996), "The Forge of Vulcan" (1997) and "Distant Thunder of the Sacred Forest" (2003) have become staples in the repertoire for middle school bands. He has received commissions ranging from middle school and high school bands to the Eastman Wind Ensemble and Canadian Brass. Michael is also in demand as a clinician and conductor for honor bands and festivals.
ComMission Possible 2 (2012)
In 2012 we commissioned Brian Balmages to write “Sun Cycles”. Our 7th grade band pre-miered the work at the High School PAC with Mr. Balmages conducting. The music is already published and will soon be performed at an In-ternational Band Convention in December!
