Renewable Energy (RE) refers to energy that is obtained from resources which are naturally replenished on a human timescale.
Renewable Energy – Different Types

Why is RE important?
Renewable Energy…
• Reduces the pressure on finite energy sources
• Provides a sustainable basis for meeting future energy demand
• Stabilizes energy prices
• Improves access to energy particularly for the poorest
• Combats climate change and increases energy security
• Stabilizes the global climate
• Contributes to healthier living conditions
• Conserves the natural environment

About 16% of global final
energy consumption comes from renewables
Renewable energy resources exist world wide, in contrast to other
energy sources, which are concentrated in a limited number of countries.
Renewable energy provides
21.7% of electricity
generation worldwide as of 2013.
At least 30 nations already have more than 20% of their energy provided by
RE

Zambia generates 2,200MW of electricity, by 2016 it is estimated that the country will have a demand of 4,000MW.
RE in Zambia – The Potential
Source: IRENA Renewable energy Country Profile: Zambia (2009), Ministry of Mines, Energy and Water Development (2014)
• High levels of hydro and solar resources, and medium wind resources give the country a strong RE potential
• Zambia easily has the potential to not only meet its own demand but that of its neighbours as well
• Mini-grids provide electricity for people living in rural and isolated areas
• They can be based around renewable sources such as hydro and solar
• Decentralizing the energy grid will be one of the major reasons for the future economic growth in Zambia
• These grids provide not only a higher living standard for the people but can be the backbone of an emerging industry
• Electrification of transport and promotion of use of biofuels can reduce Zambia’s dependency on oil imports
Description
99% of the country’s electricity comes
from hydropower
Estimated potential for the country’s hydropower
6,000 MW

Current electricity access rate of only 18.8% gives mini-grids - and therefore renewable energy - great strategic importance.
RE in Zambia – What Can It Do?
Source: IRENA Renewable energy Country Profile: Zambia 2009
Renewable Energy in Zambia can…
• Contribute to economic growth and job creation
• Promote an environmentally sound economic development
• Help to overcome poverty
• Help to avoid national tensions and conflicts caused by shortages of energy supply
• Provide a secure energy supply for Zambia

The sector of Renewable Energy in Zambia is facing several challenges making it difficult for stakeholders to enhance its growth.
• There is no central resource or authority for RE related matters in Zambia.
• Organizations and individuals generally struggle:
o To grow their knowledge,
o To network,
o To find and acquire tenders,
o To access, analyse and understand RE policies
o To find support for their projects
o To lobby for RE related matters
o To articulate and disseminate the value of RE to the general public
