AUDUBON INITIATIVE COMMENDED
In connection with the local Audubon reward for Alligator and Turtlepoaching information, Mario Hutton, President, recently received thefollowing letter:Dear Mario:
I trust your ears are burning every time Sanibel-C aptiva Audubonis mentioned at alligator conferences, and last week at the S e n a t eNatural Resources and Conservation Committee meeting at the Capitol, when Senator Henderson's "package" of alligator bills was discussedand passed by the Committee. Seno Henderson feels that the exampleyou set in creating the reward for information on poaching will do thetrick, if anything will, in getting a State Law passed that will enable theGame and Fish Commission to set up a similar $500 revolving award.(SB 238 and HB 834.) If this gets through, maybe the State Board of Con-servation could be permitted to offer a reward for sea turtle poachinginformation, and again use Sanibel-C aptiva Audubon as an example.

A NEW LOOK AT THE OLD LIGHTHOUSE
COUNTY BOARD MEETINGPriscilla Murphy, Sanibel Realtor, advised the Commissioners
there are "no Gulf front lots available, for purchase on Sanibel Islandand one small Gulf front lot on C aptiva.
"We have been deluged by requests for such property," she said,"but have been unable to fill them because there just isn't anything tobe had."
In view of this, the Realtor said, no more land should be zoned com-mercial on Sanibel or C aptiva. She added that for the best interests ofall concerned, more land should be reserved for residential purposes. The Commissioners received the letter as information.

BIRDS AND SKEETERSI can't believe anyone would
write a letter such as "SaveMosquitoes" which appeared inyour paper May 2. To quote,"The senseless liquidation ofthis insect is creating a seriousunbalance in nature for which we,the nature lovers, will suffer.
I am a nature lover too but Idon't want to adopt a mosquitoor send one to camp for the sum-mer. It's bad enough that theycome on all my fishing trips andpicnics. Next this guy will betelling us, "ants are good forour pants. *
Being a bird watcher is greatif you like bird watching. But ifit is going to affect someone likethis, he'd better take up pine-conewatching. Can you imagine anyonebreeding mosquitos? We needmosquitos like Custer neededanother Indian.
This man is worried about thebirds eating. He no doubt has hada "man to bird" conversationwith a local bird and found outthat their favorite dish is breastof mosquito, or for a quickielunch, mosquito patties. Thenfor the younger birds we havefrozen mosquito-cicles. Has thisman ever heard of bird food orbread crumbs?
Just think back when you werea kid, how many times did yourmother tell you to go out in thebackyard and throw the birds ahandful of mosquitos? If theymust have meat, I'd rather leavebologna sandwiches in my back-yard than mosquitoes. And Idon't think if the birds lack vi-tamin *M* they would suffer a lossof feathers or develop pimples.Does he think the NBC peacockgot so colorful by eating mos-quitoes. Or maybe he thinks it'sa chicken on LSD. I know most

TRUE FISH STORY
On Friday, May 9, thirty-sixanglers aboard the party boatBlue Heron, besides many redand black grouper, hauled in sixhefty giant sea bass. No less than50% of these monsters were reel-ed in by Sanibel anglers; two byMario Hutton, and one by 'Uncle'Clarence Rutland, who accountedfor the biggest, a whopper weigh-ing in the vicinity of 200 lbs. Thetrunk of Mario's car was not bigenough to accomodate the recordcatch, so a phone call to Sanibelbrought Cliff Guthrie to the r e s -cue, who was able to bring backthe overflow in his station wagon0

people have bird baths in theiryards, I do, and I have yet to finda note from a bird asking formosquito-ade.
He also said "Statistics provethat there are fewer birds nowthan ever." I wish this guy wouldcome and look at the windshieldof my car. He also said that thedecrease in the bird population islargely due to the mass murder-ing of bugs by scientific methods.Well he can feel at ease, I'veheard that a couple of the newestmethods of exterminating will beto send 83 Boy Scouts throughthe state with fly swatters. Or tosend out 71 flamenco dancers togo out and jump on all the eggs.Well, that's my answer to him,and I hope a termite eats hiscoo-coo clock.
