The Dragons’ Apprentice Challenge offers Year 12
students the opportunity to experience setting up and running a business, gaining organisational and job related skills and learning about the work and beneficiaries of their designated charity.
Teams of young people are matched with a local business mentor (their dragon) and a local charity. Their challenge is to turn £100 into £1,000+ for their designated charity. DRUM has taken part in the Dragons’ Apprentice Challenge since it first came to Watford four years ago, organised by the Watford and Three Rivers Trust. Apart from raising lots of money for DRUM (over £9,000 in the past 3 years), the relationships formed with local businesses has been invaluable to DRUM. All of our Business Dragons, Alan from Clements, Sean from Travis Perkins and Peter from Home Instead Senior Care, have continued to support DRUM long after their challenge has finished. For this year’s challenge, DRUM has been teamed with Team Cornucopia from Parmiters School and Wenta. Team Cornucopia have already raised over £800 for DRUM, log on to their MyDonate page https://mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/teamcornucopia# The team have held a cake sale at school and one of their parents held a Halloween dress-up day at work. Other events planned include a Christmas Quiz Night at DRUM, a fashion show at Parmiters School, fundraising at Asda and a Subculture music night in March. Half of the team will have a stall at their School’s Christmas Fair and the other half will be helping DRUM at our Christmas Fair, on 21st November.
Sunday 20th December – Asda Fundraising, 10am-4pm We need as many members and volunteers as possible to spend an hour or two helping Team Cornucopia with fundraising activities at Asda. If you can help out on their stall or can help with a public collection then please complete the slip on page 9.
WE NEED YOUR HELP for the Fashion Show in February. We need good quality clothes for the event, to be modelled and sold during the evening and also prizes for a raffle. We also need volunteers to help get the models ready and homemade cakes for the refreshment stall.
Do you know anyone that could help with hair, nails and make up?
Do you have any good quality clothes for us to sell?
Do you know someone with a shop, who would donate clothes, shoes or hats?
Do you know someone who could make an outfit, knit a jumper or a scarf?
Could you do art work to be used on t-shirts or bags?
Could you bake some cakes to sell on the night?
DRUMBEAT November & December 2015
Our dear friend and County Councillor Steve O’Brien sadly passed away on 7th November. Steve has been a huge supporter of DRUM for many years. He was always popping in for a cuppa and a chat with our staff and members, to see if we needed anything. Apart from his enormous support in getting the new roof agreed, Steve has continusously supported DRUM personally and though his role as a County Councillor with the Locality Budget, providing new equipment and furniture at DRUM. His last grant, awarded to DRUM in August, bought the new round tables for the hall and new furniture and a shed for the patio area.
Steve popped in just before going in to hospital to see the finished building, as he knew that he wouldn’t be able to make the opening in September. He absolutely loved it and was extremely proud of us and what we had achieved. Steve was a very genuine, kind and caring man and will be greatly missed. Our love and thoughts go out to Steve’s family and friends at this difficult time.
Staff, members, family and friends enjoyed a traditional tea party on Saturday 17th October, to celebrate DRUM’s 21st anniversary. Thank you to everyone that came along and special thanks to our wonderful team, for all the lovely food and cakes. Many thanks to the Cream Tea Brigade for their continued support and thank you to Watford HomeStart for providing the tea sets. We raised just over £200 for DRUM

Richard Donates Pay Rise to Local Charities Richard Harrington, MP for Watford, had said that the decision by the Independent Pay Body to increase MP pay was misguided and wrong. Richard had said that he was going to donate this money to charity. Richard has recently fulfilled his promise by donating the money to twenty local charities, which includes DRUM.

Fundraising DRUM is a registered charity. DRUM is a local charity and is not part of a larger or nationwide organisation. DRUM is a user-led service - our management committee is made up of disabled members, carers and volunteers. There is only one DRUM.
DRUM employs five part time staff and five regular tutors, who work additional hours unpaid. DRUM does not employ a caretaker, fundraiser, catering or cleaning staff, these jobs are carried out by our staff and volunteers. DRUM receives some funding towards the part time staff salaries from Hertfordshire County Council but we still have to raise at least £50,000 every year ourselves to keep services at our current level. This amount would be far greater if we had to pay our team for all the work they do on a voluntary basis. Money is raised through our member’s annual membership and daily attendance fees, small grant applications, donations and fundraising.
What would happen if we didn’t raise enough money? We would have to increase the daily attendance fees paid by our members. We would have to reduce some services like art, yoga and tai chi. We would have to reduce social events and days out.
What other services, like DRUM, are available locally? None.
What can you do to help? Please get involved with our fundraising events. Please encourage all your family and friends to get involved with our fundraising events. Hold your own fundraising events. Please donate tea, coffee, biscuits and squash. Please buy a weekly bonus ball. Please buy DRUM Christmas cards and encourage your family and friends to buy them too. You’d be amazed at how many Christmas cards we receive (from our members) that raise money for other charities – DRUM is YOUR charity!
