At the Niagara Symphony Orchestra, it’s all about the music; it always has been. This season, for our 70th anniversary, we celebrate a potent continuum of superb music, from the early days of our founding, growth with support from our community, and the ongoing development of the orchestra into the 21st century. Did you know the Niagara Symphony Orchestra is the oldest cultural organization in the entire region? I have planned a season-long party and you’re invited!
All of us at the NSO are proud of our commitment to introducing Canadian works to you, our audience. What better time to further delve into the rich cultural resources Canada offers than during our Sesquicentennial festivities? All our guest artists this year are Canadian We explore our nation’s unique voice with composers and songwriters of boundless passion; and of course, the musicians of the NSO are right where they should be in this special year: front and centre!
This season offers something for all, from an outstanding Masterworks series to POPS! and Classical Family concerts.
Masterworks series concerts explore the breadth and depth of treasures of the orchestral repertoire, with notable guest artists and the return of Principal Guest Conductor Aisslinn Nosky. Engaging POPS! concerts showcase the lighter side of the NSO, in a salute to Canadian music with Eleanor McCain, a tribute to Arthur Fiedler, Sarah Slean’s fresh take on Broadway classics and a traditional holiday house party to brighten your December. Classical Family concerts share the delight of great music with kids of all ages. Read on for more details of this 70th anniversary season!
The final concert of this anniversary season brings my time at the NSO full circle. As both celebration and legacy, I am proud to begin a new symphony cycle exploring the great works of Jean Sibelius; I first stepped in front of Niagara audiences conducting Sibelius eight years ago. In this, our 70th season, the NSO acknowledges its vital role in the development of Niagara’s artistic landscape and takes an unequivocal step toward a progressive future in which Niagara’s orchestra continues as a cultural progenitor, a leader in the revitalization of the city and region.
On behalf of all of us at the NSO, I invite you to join our 70th anniversary party, and experience a notable season of outstanding guest artists and splendid music. Don’t miss this extraordinary season of remembrance and celebration, stellar artists, stirring music and the launch of the Sibelius cycle. Together we will honour the past and anticipate our future, bursting with momentous possibilities for the Niagara Symphony Orchestra. Seventy years later, it’s still all about the music!

Claire de Sévigné, soprano Bradley Thachuk, conductor
Wagner Siegfried Idyll*
Previn Honey and Rue Toni Morrison, text
Ravel Mother Goose (complete ballet)**
All great artists push past traditional boundaries, sweeping us along with them. Wagner wrote a tender pastoral, an intimate gift for his wife; Ravel coloured the familiar delights of childhood with a gentle intimation of melancholy. In Honey and Rue, André Previn and Nobel Laureate Toni Morrison created a contemporary song cycle of desire, sacrifice and resolution that speaks to us all. The NSO welcomes Canadian coloratura Claire de Sévigné, who adds her expressive voice to this unforgettable work.

Sibelius Finlandia*
Williams The Five Sacred Trees: Concerto for Bassoon
Nielsen Symphony No. 4 The Inextinguishable
Distinctive, evocative, cool in nature and expression, the music of the north reflects the character of the landscape and its peoples. Undaunted, inspired by the fierce beauty of their homelands, both Sibelius and Nielsen are unique, entirely of their time and place. The NSO proudly features Principal Bassoon Anna Norris in John William’s orchestral foray into Celtic mystery and mythology, and welcomes Guest Conductor Matthew Kraemer.

FIRES OF CREATIONSUNDAY, APRIL 15, 2018 2:30PM
Bryan Cheng, cello Bradley Thachuk, conductor
Estacio Light Eternal*
Elgar Cello Concerto**
Shostakovich Symphony No. 5***
Forged in the crucible of war, transcending oppression, the creative human spirit emerges triumphant in the music of this concert. Elgar’s lyrical, contemplative concerto stands as an ardent repudiation of war; tyranny made Shostakovich ever more inventive. Never has the power of creation shone more brightly than in the face of adversity. On this powerful concert we feature one of Canada’s brightest emerging performers, Bryan Cheng, and NSO favourite, composer John Estacio.

Arthur Fiedler, of course! The NSO pays jubilant tribute to the legendary Boston Pops conductor who “unstuffed” orchestral music. Fiedler championed light classics, operetta, and popular songs, introducing such whimsical novelties as The Typewriter and The Syncopated Clock. This is music for everyone, and everyone’s music, guaranteed to raise a smile as we hark back to the charming birth of the Pops tradition. Proudly showcasing members of the Niagara Youth Orchestra in a “side-by-side” with the NSO.

Stevenson Compose Yourself*
Mozart, L. Toy Symphony
The most fun you will ever have with a symphony orchestra. The audience decides who plays what in our interactive “Compose Yourself” presentation — no two performances are ever alike. Then sit back and watch NSO musicians have a blast as they let all their sillies out in Papa Mozart’s Toy Symphony. It’s downright preposterous what they use to make music — you’ll never look at an egg beater the same way again!
