General InformationTARGET AUDIENCEThis activity meets the needs of surgical gynecologists in practice and in training, as well as other healthcare professionals in the field of gynecology.
ACCREDITATIONThis activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of AAGL and the Fellowship in Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery (FMIGS). The AAGL is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
The AAGL designates this live activity for a maximum of 19.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should claim only the credit com-mensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
CONFLICT OF INTERESTIt is the policy of the AAGL to ensure balance, independence, objective, and scientific rigor in all sponsored educational programs. All faculty par-ticipating in continuing medical education activities are required to com-plete a conflict of interest disclosure form. This information will be printed in the syllabus which will be distributed at the workshop. In addition, all participating faculty are required to disclose to the audience any real or apparent conflict of interest related to the content of their presentations, and must also disclose any discussions of unlabeled/unapproved uses of drugs or devices.
ACCME CONTENT VALIDATION STATEMENTAll the recommendations involving clinical medicine in the program are based on evidence that is accepted within the field of medicine as adequate justification for their indications and contraindications in the care of patients. All scientific research referred to, reported or used in the program in support or justification of a patient care recommendation conforms to the generally accepted standards of experimental design, data collection, and analysis.
Course DescriptionThis course will be available to FMIGS Fellows, as well as 52 Residents interested in pursuing a fellowship in MIGS.
AAGL developed this course for one of the most competitive fellow-ships in the country, the Fellowship in Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery (FMIGS). The course program will include a combination of didactic and hands-on laboratory instruction, both cadaveric and simulation.
The cadaveric lab (designed for FMIGS Fellows only) will cover anat-omy, dissection and tissue extraction. The simulation lab (for Fellows and Residents) will use both low- and high-fidelity simulators and cover elec-trosurgery, hysteroscopy, tissue extraction techniques, robotic and laparo-scopic hysterectomy.
The goal of this two-day course is to educate and update Fellows and Residents on the latest theories and developments in MIG surgery. Participants will gain an overall understanding of safe and efficient surgical techniques to allow them to successfully incorporate the principles, knowl-edge and skills into their practice as they make the transition from training to the clinical practice. The faculty consists of the top professional educa-tors in the field from around the country.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this course, the clinician will be able to: 1) Employ techniques for safe and efficient peritoneal entry and port placement; 2) identify pelvic anatomy and demonstrate entry into the retroperitoneum to open the pararectal and paravesical spaces, describe techniques to isolate the uterine artery and infundibulopelvic ligament, and perform ureterolysis; 3) review principles of energy used in minimally invasive surgery and explain how to avoid complications; 4) demonstrate minimally invasive techniques (laparoscopic, robotic, vaginal) to perform hysterectomy, reproductive surgery (endometriosis resection, myomectomy, and cerclage) and tissue extraction; 5) prevent, recognize, and manage bowel, bladder, ureteral, vascular, and nerve injuries during gynecologic surgery; 6) explain principles in managing difficult pelvic pain problems; and 7) review current research studies on the Fellows’ Pelvic Research Network (FPRN) and describe project selection and development.
