2017Manitoba Local Produce GuideYour guide to Manitoba’s farmers’ markets, pre-picked market stands, U-Pick vegetable gardens and Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farms.
Welcome to Manitoba’s Local Produce Guide 2017
It is our pleasure to share with you Manitoba’s Local Produce Guide 2017. This guide provides a handy reference to places around the province where you can find fresh, high-quality produce, grown right here in Manitoba.
We invite you to travel Manitoba’s beautiful landscape and experience home-grown freshness through U-Pick gardens, farmers’ markets and market stands. You’ll find locally grown foods that are fully ripened and bursting with flavour, which can be on your dinner plate the same day they’re picked.
While you’re enjoying local gardens and markets, meet the farm families that grow and prepare this delicious produce, and learn more about the foods we eat from the people who grow it.
When you buy from local farmers, you’re not only getting fresh and tasty foods, you’re supporting local businesses and keeping our food dollars where they belong–in our local communities. You’re also protecting our environment, as local foods only travel short distances, reducing harmful carbon dioxide emissions.
If you can’t get around to the local gardens and markets, you can subscribe to a participating Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farm. With your subscription, you pay for a share at the beginning of the season, and your CSA will deliver local foods each week to a pick-up location near you.
Please keep this guide with you this summer as you travel around Manitoba. As you explore this beautiful province, use the guide to find local markets and gardens that provide the best foods the world has to offer, right here in Manitoba.
Get out there and experience fresh from the farmWhether you shop, pick or have your produce delivered to your door in a CSA-share box, this guide will help you access fresh local produce in the way that best suits you. There are several ways to access produce direct from the farm this season:
• Farmers’ markets • Pre-picked market stands • U-Pick vegetable gardens • Community Supported / Shared Agriculture (CSAs)
Farmers’ Markets You can stock up on fresh food and local goods at any of the numerous farmers’ markets around the province. Producers grow, pick, make and sell a variety of quality direct farm
fruit, vegetables and meats as well as, home preserves and unique crafts. Farmers’ markets bring a diversity of producers together in one location to sell their goods directly to consumers. Each producer has a separate stall or stand at the market. For an online listing of farmers’ markets in Manitoba, visit Direct Farm Manitoba: www.directfarmmanitoba.ca/markets
U-Pick Vegetable Gardens You can harvest your vegetables yourself and get the pick of the crop at U-Pick vegetable gardens. Enjoy fresh air and exercise while you shop. You also
have the opportunity to talk to growers one-on-one. Bring along the family, friends and neighbours; add a picnic lunch and make a day of it. You’ll have fun and can take home tasty, hand-picked produce.
Pre-Picked Market Stands These are usually roadside stands on or near the farmer’s property. The farmers pick the produce for you and replenish the supplies with fresh produce daily. You get
the added advantage of the opportunity to talk to the growers one-on-one about the way they farm and how to get the most out of their produce. Some stands specialize in a few particular varieties of produce, while others have a broader range, depending on the growing conditions of each farm or market garden.
Community Supported/Shared Agriculture (CSA) FarmsThis is a unique way to form partnerships between farmers and their
customers. As a customer, you become a member by investing a fee in the farmers’ crops in the spring. When the crops are harvested, you receive a share of the vegetables the farmer grows. Every CSA is unique. Contact these farms directly to find out more information and how they operate. For an online list of CSAs in Manitoba, visit CSA Manitoba: www.csamanitoba.org.
Make the most of your tripsPlan ahead –You’ll save time and avoid disappointment if you confirm hours of operation and selection of vegetables in advance.
Include fresh fruit on your list – Check out the Prairie Fruit Growers Association (PFGA) directory for all the information you need to buy from local fruit markets and gardens. You can find it online at www.pfga.com.
Ask growers for information – Take some time to talk to the farmers about cooking, freezing, canning, or recipe ideas.
Bring along this guide – Use it to plan visits to more than one outlet and expand your adventure, variety and choices.
Be a tourist – Pack up family and friends and make it a weekend outing. Check out local tourist attractions along the way.
Consider organic produce – The demand for organic produce is growing. To be sure you’re buying truly organic produce look for a Canada Organic label or an official federal certificate.
When you buy direct from a farm, you’re enjoying fresh, healthy produce, supporting Manitoba farmers and helping grow Manitoba’s economy.
Selling your locally produced foods to consumers
Buying local food provides consumers with the opportunity to feel connected to their food and with the people who produce it.
If you are interested in learning about starting or expanding into a direct farm marketing business, plan to attend the Direct Farm Marketing Conference which will be held in Winnipeg, February 9 and 10, 2018. This year’s conference will be hosted by the Prairie Fruit Growers Association and Direct Farm Manitoba. It is a great opportunity to network with like-minded individuals and learn more about how to market to local consumers.
Make plans to attend the 2018 Direct Farm Marketing Conference. For more information, visit www.directfarmmarketing.com.
2017 OPEN
FARM DAYSunday, September 17
Take your family to a farm
The Manitoba Association of Agricultural Societies is hosting Open Farm Day in Manitoba this year.
Open Farm Day connects the public directly with farmers, ranchers and market gardeners for hand-on learning and farm-fresh products. Get family and friends together and head out on a fun, farm adventure. Meet local farmers,
learn more about farm products, watch demonstrations, enjoy recreational activities
and ask questions about farm life.
Many host farms feature homegrown and homemade products for sale and some offer
additional activities like a corn maze or pumpkin picking. To get information about a specific
host farm or additional activities, contact the host farm directly.
To learn more about Open Farm Day, visit www.openfarmday.ca
for regular updates or follow them on Facebook.
