Christmas Care Packages For Our Troops
Memorabilia Report
December 2018 saw our staff play Santa’s elves in preparing 200 care packages for our current troops serving overseas.
The packages contained many Aussie favourites such as vegemite, Christmas cake, shortbread, Anzac biscuits, mini pudding, coffee, chips, puzzle books, Christmas card and much more.
The boxes were well received and it was gratifying to receive some thank you wishes from our serving men and women, including: From G ‘… a most sincere thank you, the snacks were fantastic to receive, especially the vegemite’. Pte C ‘… it is very humbling to know that people are thinking of us during these long periods away from our loved ones.’ Sig P ‘… we all got enjoyment out of the chips and lollies’. Sgt H ‘…Thank you so much for your thoughtful package. Each one we receive brings us closer to home.’ Cpl S ‘… your generous gift brought some joy from Australia at a time when we all find it difficult to be away from home.’ Lt Col W ‘… your biscuits and puddings were a great treat to have with a brew.
A former female veteran of Peace Keeping Operations and Afghanistan, Donna Bourke visited our RSL and donated her book entitled ‘Hidden Courage – My Life as a Female Australian Soldier’.
The book has been placed into our library in the Members Bar area. Please remember our books cannot be removed from the premises.
Thank you to those who have considered Greensborough RSL for donations of military books and DVDs which previously belonged to a relative or friend. At the moment we are full to capacity with storage at a premium.
So unfortunately we are not in a position to accept any more of that particular type of donation.

ANZAC DAY 2019
Greensborough Memorial Park
Have you visited the Greensborough Memorial Park to look at the wooden sculptures that were added last year to complete the Homefront Project? The sculptures were unveiled on 11 November 2018, marking the end of the 100th anniversary of World War 1. The display includes a Lighthorse soldier, pilot and sailor, World War 1 nurse and ‘the letter’.
The sculptures were completed by a small team of artists including Chainsaw artists Hikaru Kodama and Leigh Conkie, blacksmith Roland Dannanhauer and designer Amanda Gibson.
The sculptures were a labour of love for all concerned and symbolises our unique part in military history.

We finished the second half of the season with an even slate, eventually finishing equal 5th, one game from competing in finals and yet facing relegation to C Grade after Round 11.
More practice and therefore consistency is the recipe for improvement next season which commences in early Feb 2019.
Thanks to Greensborough RSL for another season of much appreciated on-going support.

Yarra Glen Race Day
Our Blue Diamond Race Day at Yarra Glen in February proved to be a great success with 107 attendees. For once, the Melbourne sun shone all day and the crowds at the winning post cheered when their winner came home.
The ladies wore pretty summer dresses, flowers and feather fascinators were colourful and the most popular choice for headwear. As usual the lawn area was interesting to observe with birthday parties and the traditional bucks and hens big day out.
The day was made easier for all with no driving required, instead leaving the driving to the very experienced Dysons coach drivers.
There were plenty of high fives around the room after each race so there were a few lucky punters who picked the winning combinations.
Many came back to the RSL at the end of the day very relaxed and already asking about next year’s event.
The last quarter of 2018 was a busy one for the Social Club. The Children’s Christmas Party went reasonably well and luckily the weather held. Whilst 110 names were listed for presents, it is disappointing that only 54 were collected on the day. We cater for drinks and icy poles based on the number of presents and the lack of attendees meant some of the food items had to be discarded. The left over drinks were donated to Simpson Barracks.
Unfortunately the Social Club Christmas dinner dance had to be cancelled for the second year in a row due to lack
of numbers. A cancellation fee also had to be paid to the band. Any ideas from our members are always welcome. The Christmas raffle was extremely popular with over a 1000 tickets sold. Our lucky winners are members of the Greensborough RSL.
