In what might be the highest
honor any high school swimmer
could receive, Franklin Central senior
Rachel Schiffli couldn’t believe she
was named the IHSAA’s Mental At-
titude Award Winner.
“I was not expecting it at all actu-
ally,” Schiffli said. “My coach (Nick
Stevens) kinda made us stay around
for the end of the meet. I was a little
bit confused because my events had
already taken place, so I thought we
were going to leave after that. He
was like let’s stick around and keep
watching the last couple events, so
I was like OK (because) that didn’t
really bother me. And my friends
started recording me and I was
confused. This guy started talking
about the mental attitude award and I
kinda put it together. But I didn’t really

The eulogy for Beech
Grove boys’ basketball
coach Matt English isn’t
over, just not yet.
This season’s Hor-
nets added a sectional
championship Saturday
at Danville to the on-
going honors for their
coach with a gritty 48-45
win against Manual.
Coach English had
never won a sectional
championship until now.
Coach Mike Renfro,
a longtime assistant with
English, revealed that he
called upon his mentor
again Saturday and
claimed the program’s
first title since 2008.
“I was pacing more
than ever today in the
lockerroom, and I was
talking to him by myself,”
Renfro recalled. “I asked
him to please help me
out a little bit on the
sidelines, and I got that
help when I needed it.”
English’s “presence”
kept Renfro calm and
focused on the sidelines,
‘Coach English
was here tonight’
especially through the adversity of facing the taller and quicker
Redskins from neighboring Manual.
They overcame when senior center Gavin Hess picked up his
second foul with 2:41 left in the first quarter and fourth foul late in
the fourth quarter. Renfro called upon junior football lineman Josh
Fryar to go against Manual’s 6-8 towers Ijazz Abdulmumin and

40TH ANNIVERSARY

The Mary Bryan Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) celebrated its
40th anniversary with state leaders at a luncheon at Logan’s Roadhouse in Greenwood earlier

chapter regent Carolyn Ferraro, honorary state regent JoAn Nichols, chapter vice regent Lathena
Vogel and chapter corresponding secretary Cathy Pollachek; back row, standing, chapter mem-

registrar Vicki Kurtz, Barbara Teepe, Sharon LaMon, chaplain Vicki Jordal, Mary Ann Polk, Sandy
Baughn and Christine Kroll. Also attending were five visiting chapter regents and prospective
members. The DAR is a lineage-based membership service organization for women who are
directly descended from a person who was involved in the American Revolutionary War. It is a
non-profit group that promotes historic preservation, education and patriotism. The Mary Bryan
Chapter has been involved in the Greenwood community since 1979.
The Quilters
Guild of Indianapolis
South continued the
honored practice
Thursday of present-
ing quilts of valor
to two U.S. Army
veterans at Friedens
United Church of
Christ.Quilts were hand-
made and presented
by Jeanette Bagley
to Ron Parker of
Terre Haute and by
Margie Lindeman
and to Sue Good,
daughter of veteran
William J. Tavenor,
100 years old, who
could not attend the
special ceremony.
Each quilt-maker
nominated the
military veteran to
receive a one-of-a-
kind quilt through the
nationwide Quilt of
Valor program that
began in Delaware
in 2003. More than
100,000 quilts have
been presented
nationally. The quilts
are described as
“healing quilts to
service men and
women touched by
war.”Sgt. Parker
served in Vietnam
in 1966 and 1967
and received seven
medals, including a
Bronze Star in Army
Accommodation. He
is a private pilot and
maintains a Japa-
nese garden.
Tavenor, who
was based at Fort
McArthur, served in
the U.S. Army from
1940 through 1945
during World War II.
The Southside
guild was formed 41
years ago as a branch of the Quilters Guild of Indianapolis because the parent
branch had grown in large numbers.
Sandi Charles serves as the chair of the South guild which meets the fourth
Thursday from January through October.
