STATEMENT OF VIEWS:
My past experience of interacting with nurses and organizations at the grass-roots level, has given me a lot of insight
as to how some of these challenges may be addressed. When I assumed the Presidency of the ANA, I set some goals
that I thought would help reduce the challenges that I saw facing the ANA. Those goals are still on-going, but we are
making progress. The three top challenges that I see are:
1. Foster efforts to increase the diversity of nursing -focus on increased collaboration by ANA with diverse
organizations of nurses and well as increased participation in ANA by nurses spanning cultures, genders, race and
generations. Nursing and ANA need to better represent the diverse populations of patients.
2. Increase the relevance of ANA to nurses – especially nurses at the bedside and continue to grow membership.
ANA needs to be seen as the professional home of nursing by all nurses, not just a few!
3. Increase nurses’ engagement with consumers and consumers’ understanding of the value of nursing .
Amplify ANA’s advocacy on behalf of nurses and consumers; educate nurses to understand how decisions made at
the local, state or national level impact on their ability to practice and engage them in advocacy.
Over the past year, I have reached out to various minority nursing organizations such as the National Black Nurses
Association, The National Association of Hispanic Nurses, and Chi Eta Phi, etc., to discuss with them the value of
becoming an organizational affiliate, (OA). Through the dialogues held, I was able to point out that becoming an
organization Affiliate would allow their organization to achieve the following:
1. The ability to influence ANA and the broader nursing agenda
2. Ability to network with the larger nursing community (ANA and other OAs)
3. Participation in ANA Policy development
4. Participation in some ANA events
5. ANCC Nursing Continuing Professional Development Accreditation.
The organizations listed and others have either joined as an Organization Affiliate or are currently considering joining.
Through my ability to reach out to these organizations and to let them know that becoming an OA allows them to have

9
their voices heard at the national level in a different forum. Through the networking process, they can interact with ANA
and other nursing organizations and collaborate on ideas, concepts and policy. The ANA benefits by collaborating with
organizations that have experts that can actively participate in the development of policy and position statements that
are accurate and peer supported.
I have supported the mission, vision and values of the ANA in multiple settings. In my role as President, as I have
traveled across the country and internationally, I have promoted these guiding principles at all times, especially during
keynotes and group discussion opportunities. I have listened to nursing leaders, CNOs, students, staff nurses and
other members of the health care profession as they have expressed their frustration with staffing, bullying, workplace
violence and lack of sufficient work/life balance between shifts. I have informed and directed these individuals to the
various programs and campaigns that ANA has that may be of assistance. I have addressed issues that are pertinent and
important to the profession, the individual nurse and the public within my monthly columns. I visited with and written
letters to legislators that addressed such issues as migrant detention, healthcare access and funding for nursing
education. I have written about and supported healthcare initiatives at the C/SNA levels that has created opportunities
for increased visibility of the nursing profession. Finally, I have actively participated in the development and eventual
dissemination of a new strategic plan that will further promote the vale of membership, advocacy and public
engagement.
Prior to and immediately after assuming the presidency of the ANA, I reached out to minority nurses organizations
with a determined focus on increased collaboration by the ANA to extend an offer of collaboration and inclusivity.
However, going beyond that, I strongly feel the need to ensure that everything the Enterprise, the ANA, and its C/SNAs
undertake, be reflective of the nursing profession...meaning that initiatives, priorities and programs should span
culture, gender, race and generations. Such initiatives must be representative of people we serve and the individual
nurse him/herself. Several of my editorials in The American Nurse has expressed my opinions and pointed out things
that we as individual nurses, C/SNAs and the ANA Enterprise can do to ensure an inclusive environment. For example,
recruitment materials should feature a wide representation of diversity (race, culture, gender, age), etc., so that
2020 Candidate Profile Guide
10
perspective members can see a reflection of themselves within the organization and know that they are valued and
represented. I have stressed that Inclusivity should also be a part of mission, vision and values statements of all
organizations. Finally, during ANA's most recent strategic planning sessions, I collaborated with others to ensure that
diversity remains an enterprise top priority.

I have served in several non-profit board positions at the local, state, and national level. Each of these roles has required me to

have a robust understanding of the rules, regulations, and governing documents. During my tenure at the American Nurses
Credentialing Center, I worked directly with the board of directors and commissions to ensure the bylaws and operating policies
were current, amended as needed, and that both staff and members of the boards and commissions were accountable to these
key principles. As a Chief Nurse Officer, I work with bylaws, rules, and regulations governing the medical staff, nursing
governance body, and board of directors on a daily basis.
The three most significant challenges I see facing the ANA are: Competing interests from specialty nursing organizations. To
address this challenge, the ANA must be clear and concise in its messaging and its role as THE primary advocacy organization
for ALL nurses. There is an opportunity to increase the awareness of the critical work ANA does on behalf of advanced practice
nurses. Furthermore, the ANA should be a convener of specialty nursing organizations, when appropriate, to leverage the
collective power of these interests, An uncertain political environment. In order to fully execute on policy and advocacy matters,
it is imperative that there is a clearly articulated strategic plan that is both flexible and innovative. Clear positions on critical
issues to nurses such as staffing, safety, and ethics must be at the forefront and transcend the current political climate.
Maintaining a contemporary and nimble value-proposition for recruiting and retaining members. Working across generations
and meeting members and potential members where they are is critical for long term membership engagement. The ANA has
an opportunity to increase its digital footprint making the benefits of membership more accessible for the growing number of
millennial nurses creating a life-long professional home.
Having served two terms on the Virginia Nurses Association board of directors as Vice President and as Treasurer, I had the
opportunity to work with several key projects to influence others and sustain change throughout the state. During my board
tenure, we worked in conjunction with other state nursing organizations to secure collaborative practice for advanced practice

14
nurses which ultimately led to independent practice, in certain cases, for APNs across the state. In addition, we achieved several
key advocacy and legislative changes to protect nurses and ensure their ability to practice at the top of their license and training.
During my time working for the American Nurses Association and the American Nurses Credentialing Center, I had the
opportunity to influence changes to our credentialing programs to ensure the relevancy of these programs for the future. In
addition, we continued to lay the groundwork to build a stronger evidence-base to underpin our credentialing programs although
more work is needed in this area to ensure the ongoing investment in these mission-critical aspects of the ANA enterprise.
I had the privilege to be part of the American Nurses Association/American Nurses Credentialing Center executive leadership
team when the current mission of the ANA was ratified. "Transforming the nation's health through the power of nursing" became
embedded in everything that we did throughout the organization, the nation, and the globe. As the leader of the Magnet and
Pathway to Excellence programs, I had the privilege to represent the ANA/ANCC throughout the world as we worked to further
this mission by ensuring exceptional patient outcomes in our designated hospitals, working with ministries of health and nursing
organizations in other countries to raise the level of nursing practice and ultimately improving patient care. I continue to support
the work of the ANA through my professional work, publications, and speaking engagements. As a university faculty member, I
include the work of the ANA in all of my course work with students ensuring they understand the critical importance of supporting
the purpose and mission of the ANA.

Diversity and inclusion are cornerstones of my fundamental leadership beliefs. Diversity in the traditional sense as well as the
diversity of thought are critical elements to creating a strong, effective team. While on the VNA board of directors, I served as a
member of the nominations committee and 2 terms as the nominations committee chair. The primary goal during my tenure was
to create a diverse slate of highly qualified candidates that represented the nurses across out state. I am proud to say that we
were very successful in bringing together a slate that represented a strong level of diversity in age, sex, race, experience, sexual
orientation, and practice settings.
I am very active in advocacy for increased diversity in nursing leadership in my own organization and have actively participated
in the recruitment of key executives from diverse backgrounds during my first year of tenure.

Enterprise structure, am familiar with the bylaws of the organization and have participated in joint strategic planning with ANA,
ANCC and ANF. I presently serve on the ANA PAC and wish to continue that as well. I have a sound understanding of ANA
Enterprise operating policies and feel I am qualified to continue as Secretary based on the competency model that was put into
place in 2018. I understand nursing professional scope of practice and served several years on the Ethics Advisory Council for
the ANA. I hope to assist in the work necessary to meet the strategic initiatives set forth by the strategic plan and understand
stewardship of the organization meeting state and national needs. Previously I have served on several Boards, including LSNA
and District Nurses Association, Visiting Nurses Board of Directors and New Orleans Council on Aging Board of Directors. I
participated prior to, during and in the recovery phase of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. This was extremely challenging, and
the boards' work assisted in maintaining stability for those organizations
The first significant challenge facing ANA is to be able to remain supportive and resilient to ANA members, in an ever increasing
portable and fluid healthcare delivery system. ANA should be able to be the centralized resource hub for educational and practice
institutions that are facing ever present transitions of care delivery models. ANA should provide best practices in any health
delivery system including support for nurses at all levels delivering care at full scope of practice. In my 20 years as a nurse
educator, I have curriculum development and research experience that will enhance my ability to assist in creating such resources.
The second significant challenge facing ANA is to become a leaner organization. Because of the availability of technology, ANA
workforce could be consolidated into lean work teams consisting of qualified, agile and design thinking individuals. The use of
work teams has proven extremely efficient in academia, with fewer faculty able to provide the time to develop innovative products
and services. The third significant challenge facing ANA is to be able to adapt to the nursing profession changing roles every 2
or 3 years. Nursing is evolving and ANA must keep pace with support for that evolution.
2020 Candidate Profile Guide
19
One knows that changing an organizations culture is extremely difficult. When I became a faculty member 20 plus years ago,
very few faculty were members of ANA. Many faculty chose specialty organizations instead of district or state organizations.
Many faculty did not understand differences between organizations. I have always been an active member of my district
organization, as it was a natural transition from student organization President. I experienced the impact of organized effort. I
began to recruit others to district meetings and state meetings. Slowly more faculty wanted to become involved with the initiatives
we were focusing on. Issues such as practice at full scope of practice, revisions to the nurse practice act, the recovering nurse
program and a professional mentoring program. Soon, not only did the faculty participating increase, but faculty began to
consider running for leadership positions at the district and state levels. I cannot take sole credit for this change of culture, but
I can certainly claim that my positive experiences and feelings off fulfillment and giving back to the profession, assisted with
other faculty wanting to do the same. Today we have a majority of faculty membership in our state and local organizations.
I believe I have worked these past two years in support of the mission and purpose of the ANA is that I have disseminated the
vision, mission and goals of the organization as stated below and have participated in development of strategic objectives to
meet those goals. I have shown, in my daily interactions, that every nurse and nursing students can lead the profession to shape
the future of nursing and healthcare (mission) by simple daily actions. I believe that a role of an academic educator can influence
the profession of nursing in a profound and positive way. I have demonstrated how to elevate the professional role of the nurse
by identifying nurses’ impact. I have fought to empower student nurses and nursing faculty into leadership roles and have help
to develop innovative approaches to delivery of care. I have engaged with other nurses by mentoring others for successful
endeavors. I have presented technology products for nursing education at the national and international level and I have hopefully
enriched the nurse, nurse student and patient experience using that technology. I am always eager to assist faculty and student
nurses in development of new processes and policies to enhance experiences.
2020 Candidate Profile Guide
20
Understanding culture and how it impacts patient care is an essential part of nursing practice. I have had the honor of being part
of a team of faculty that developed a program for nurses/ nursing students to enhance cultural understanding in times of
disaster.
Through our experiences with disasters, we found that some nurses lacked the cultural understanding that could have made a
huge difference in patient outcomes. My team developed a cultural competency based program to train nurses, best practices in
delivering care to the most vulnerable populations in times of disasters. The program consists of 13 self-directed modules
focusing on specific populations such as: homeless, aging adult, non-English speaking, pediatric, obstetrics, terminally ill,
mentally ill, and one specifically for advanced practice nurses. We have also developed an app, with the program, in order for
nurses to be able to access the program at any time. We address three modules that contain basic disaster response information,
cultural competency foundational knowledge and ethical and legal implications for the nurse. Evaluation results of the program,
from students and practicing RN's has been extremely positive. The program is available online to anyone, in application stores
for android, Microsoft and apple products.

STATEMENT OF VIEWS:
As the premier organization that supports nurses throughout the span of their careers, I believe that we can address the
challenges with the engagement of our early career and up and comer segments by offering more opportunities for these
members to take on leadership roles within the organization, such as having more C/SNA Recent Graduate Directors.
Secondly, we must strive for a more diverse community within ANA. Modeling ANA's successful Minority Fellowship
Program, we should look to develop similar initiatives that will increase our outreach in other specialties to better support
minority nurses in advancing their education and ability to take on leadership roles. Lastly, nurses do not fully understand
the role of ANA and the value of membership. Many nurses continue to join their specialty organizations due to the
perceived immediate value added to their practice and professional development. We need to enhance our partnerships
with Organizational Affiliates to increase visibility and reinforce the benefits of joint engagement for the advancement of
their specialty and the profession. My experience serving at the NSNA, C/SNA, and ANA level as a minority nurse provides
me with the unique vantage point to formulate and advocate for creative solutions to address these challenges.
By being an active member of ANA, I have been an active participant on various meaningful initiatives; from serving on
numerous committees for ANA-Massachusetts to now being on the ANA board and partaking in strategic planning efforts
that will transform the future of this organization. All of which reflect our mission to lead the profession and shape the
future of nursing. Most recently, I had the privilege to serve on the 2019 Presidential Endorsement Taskforce. Our task was
to review the 1985 HOD policy regarding Presidential Candidate Endorsement and assess if the current process met the
organization’s best interest. Serving on this taskforce was challenging yet rewarding. The Taskforce was composed of a
very diverse work group with different opinions on the matter. This experience taught me to feel comfortable with voicing
my opinion and challenging the status quo. Each of us brought forth important factors to be considered and reflected well
on the ever-changing political landscape, keeping the interest of our membership a priority. Ultimately, we were able to

assemble a new policy, the Presidential Engagement Policy that was adopted at the 2019 Membership Assembly allowing
all members to engage in advocacy and lobbying.
The American Nurses Association represents the interests of the nation’s 4 million registered nurses. Our mission to lead
the profession to shape the future of nursing and health care, is exemplified through our work in advocacy and nursing
excellence. One of my most profound experiences was serving on the health policy committee for ANA-Massachusetts.
Through mentorship and support of my colleagues, I learned to navigate the political arena and advocate for key nursing
initiatives such as safe staffing, ending workplace violence, and advocating for full practice authority for APRN’s. This year,
I have been appointed to serve on the ANA PAC Board of Trustees where I hope to continue my passion in health policy and
advocacy. Furthermore, I have dedicated my service to ANA through governance in my various board positions. It has been
an absolute honor to serve in this capacity. In my current role on the board, I represent the voice of staff nurses and have
had the privilege to work on nursing scopes and standards, partake in strategic planning, and keep bedside nurses in the
forefront of all programming and initiatives.
In order to advance ANA, we must embrace cultural dexterity through the advancement of diversity and inclusivity. In 2012,
I had the privilege of being awarded the Hausman Fellowship for Minority Nurses at MGH. This experience as well as serving
on the diversity committee provided me the opportunity to cultivate programs such as diversity rounds to ensure patients
and employees actively participated in culturally competent care. As a first-generation Hispanic nurse and emerging leader
in the profession, I can attest to the importance of creating an inclusive environment both culturally and in all aspects of
diversity. When serving as a Board Director for ANA-MA, I also served on the Career Connections Committee to assist in
fostering relationships amongst our well- experienced members and new graduates, encouraging new to practice nurses to

become involved in ANA. In my current role as a clinical nurse and member of the shared governance steering planning
committee at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, “Inclusivity” is a value we are actively incorporating into our new model
and will be following metrics to measure it's success.
Moreover, as a member of the ANA Board of Directors, I am constantly engaging in governance while keeping inclusivity in
the forefront of my decision-making.

STATEMENT OF VIEWS:
Significant challenges facing the American Nurses Association are in concert with the challenges facing the nation. Keeping
our nurses mentally and physically healthy in an ever changing, evolving and challenging world is paramount to the future
of nursing. Healthy nurses are the foundation to addressing the challenges faced by nurses and the American Nurses
Association: advocacy for patient and profession and practicing to the full scope of licensure. My experience as a direct care
Registered Nurse for over 25 years, as well as an academic administrator who has developed relationships across practice,
academe, and communities of interest make me well positioned to ensure success of the ANA. The ANA cannot do it alone.
A comprehensive strategy that includes wellness, work-life balance and building partnerships will continue to advance
nursing in the standing of the nation. My strategic acumen is evidenced by my success in building comprehensive nursing
programs, building and leveraging a diverse colleague bench to achieve robust goals.
Building collaborative, diverse teams aligned with the University mission and philosophy is critical to achieving superior
outcomes. In my role of Campus President at Chamberlain College of Nursing, I was tasked with opening a branch campus of
the largest national nursing college in a new market. My approach was steady and balanced, grounded in relationships, clear
expectations, accountability, and teamwork. Engaging internal and external academic, operational, service and community
stakeholders was paramount to success. This collaborative strategy has supported academic and operational excellence, rapid
enrollment growth, and a positive campus culture.
2020 Candidate Profile Guide

My professional nursing career well aligns with the American Nurses Association mission and purpose of advancing our
profession to improve health for all. We cannot do it alone. Developing relationships within the community are vital to
meeting our mission. An example of this is my leadership opening and growing the Chamberlain College of Nursing North
Brunswick campus. Tactical outreach to health care partners permitted me to develop relationships supportive of advocacy,
obtaining and retaining excellent sites for clinical preparation, and continued campus growth. The Chamberlain North
Brunswick Board of Trustees provides a forum for robust discussion that addresses the needs of the campus, our students,
and the healthcare workforce in New Jersey. Under my leadership, relationships with key stakeholders support current and
future opportunities for Chamberlain students and achieve campus strategic goals. A sampling of accomplishments
resulting from these partnerships includes student grant eligibility, scholarships, campus safety, and healthy
campus/community life. The campus enjoys a sound and collaborative relationship with the New Jersey Board of Nursing
and New Jersey Office of Higher Education due to the consistent, respectful, ongoing positive relationship achieved under
my stewardship. Entering the fifth year, Chamberlain North Brunswick has graduated over 300 nurses who are improving
health for all.
I intentionally leverage strategic associations to impact policy and advance populations. Under my stewardship, Chamberlain
North Brunswick provides economic and business opportunity for state and local communities, adding to the tax base
while providing baccalaureate education to the citizens of New Jersey. The student body at North Brunswick is culturally
diverse, reflective of the demographic spectrum of the NY metropolitan area. Enjoying 93% retention metrics, the campus
enrolls students who are first in their family to attend college, underserved groups. North Brunswick graduates are making
significant impact to the national nursing shortage in a region where the other schools of nursing have long wait lists.
Chamberlain North Brunswick graduates practice in the greater New York metropolitan area and throughout the country,
contributing substantively to quality initiatives in nursing service and reflecting the populations they serve.

STATEMENT OF VIEWS:
I see the three most significant challenges being increasing membership, remaining relevant and continuing to build an
infrastructure to support nurses. I think to increase membership it is pivotal that the organization remain relevant and
engaged in the issues facing nurses in the workforce. All the challenges can be conquered if the organization remains in
touch with nurses. The organization should continue its work to create safe work environments and empower nurses to
speak up. Our profession has always been an innovator, but I believe the organization is providing opportunities for nurses
to be a voice in innovation. It is also important that we remember the trauma our profession exposes us to and account
for things like second victim trauma, burn out and compassion fatigue. We can launch conservations on a national stage
to connect nurses with assistance. I believe there is more research which could be done to measure the impacts of being
a caregiver specifically a nurse. We should continue to encourage nurses on boards to help facilitate positive change and

expose others tour profession. Lastly, I strongly believe our profession’s pipeline can group with educational outreach. We
should teach children how wonderfully diverse our field can be.
I developed a Social Media conference based off the principles released by ANA. This conference included Social Media
Experts, Human Resources Leaders and Attorneys. This offering reach over 200 nurses. Also served on a committee which
was tasked by the Louisiana Health Works Commission and the House of Representatives to assess workplace violence
towards nurses and social workers. Within this committee I reviewed literature and contributed to our final
recommendations.
I have worked to increase membership at the state and district levels, and I have contributed to health policy at the state
level. I have made an effort to connect my district with their political leaders and to provide my fellow nurses with education
on the Louisiana State Association, Foundation and Political Action Coalition. I have supported and encouraged the efforts
of nurses acquiring certifications within their area. Through programing with my employer as well as within my district and
the state level I have championed health nurse initiatives also known as care for the caregiver. Lastly, I have always strived
to improve the work environment for nurses at every level of practice. I serve on a System-wide Workplace Violence Steering
Committee and the System Informatics Council for my employer.

I serve as the Diversity Co-chair for the New Orleans Region -Louisiana Action Coalition. Louisiana Action Coalition is tasked
with advancing and implementing the recommendations from the Institute of Medicine's Report. I lead System Nursing
Outreach for my employer, and I partner with the organization’s HR resource groups to ensure programs remain inclusive
and diverse. I have developed programs to engage minority and male students in nursing. These programs produce positive
qualitative results. I believe to produce a strong and inclusive workforce we must engage young children. If they see nursing
as a viable career it will help increase diversity in our workforce.

Special Accomplishments, Academic Achievements and Honor
Special accomplishments include formation of the first credit-awarding
nurse practitioner program in Kansas (Wichita) by chairing the first
committee to author the original bill for enacting legislation to establish
the advanced practice role of nursing, i.e original statute, KSA 65-
ll13.(l975) After enactment(l980), continued work was given to serve on a
special committee of the Ks State Board of Nursing to write the first drafts
of rules and regulations addressing practice requirements as well as
curricular standards for advanced practice programs (l98l(KAR 60-l0l).
During this process, 200 students were educated and placed to 65% of Ks
counties (l03), serving in rural, underserved, unserved with vulnerable
populations, 28 states (mostly in concordance with a National Health
Service Corps grant/contract), and 3 foreign countries, i.e missionary work.
Following the establishment of this first state accredited program, Dr. Lee
was asked, after completing the feasibility study for another state program,
western Ks, to chair and develop/implement the first rural based, degree-
bound, graduate level( Hays, Ks). Interestingly, with lack of support from
many of the rural doctors initially, a clinic was organized and established
in partnership with the only medical center, to provide primary care and
serve as a training site, Dr. Lee, serving as Co-director of the clinic, still

of Ks developed a partnering grant, asking Hays and Dr. Lee, to participate
for rural links, i.e, the first consortium in the state to televise and augment
on-line learning at the graduate level, i.e., miles and miles of line had to be
strung so as to provide the technological capability for this. During this
time, Dr. Lee also did telemedicine clinical practices, with students, with
KU, i.e. cardiac assessments. This venue was followed by request to join
Nebraska team to develop a NP program, private school, Omaha. During
this time, Dr. Lee worked closely with NE leaders to move the joint practice
arrangements for advanced practice to those placed only with Board of
Nursing, noting that the NNA was very supportive in these efforts.
Following this venture, the President and Dean of this University, requested
I come to California to assist a fledging (on notice by the SBN) NP program
to regroup, which was a success. During this time, many links with ANA-
CA were made, including several presentations for
educators. Also, I was part of the planning with the Dean to augment a
Nexus program, on-line graduate nursing classes across the region. During
this time, I served for over l5 yrs. as consultant for Northeastern
University's outreach NP program for conferences across the nation
addressing primary care of vulnerable populations.
Professional accomplishments are major service to date in the ANA, KSNA,
local district and other nursing organizations, e.g. Sigma Theta Tau, being
on the latter, the keynote speaker during the establishment of the first

STATEMENT OF VIEWS:
2020 Candidate Profile Guide
39
Challenge #l relates to health needs, especially with aging population and underserved, and the mean age of the practicing
nurse, ie. staffing concerns.
Challenge #2 includes increasing demand for highly educated/energized nurses, i.e., BSN and above, in areas, especially
rural, where the school output is not limiting due to faculty staffing and clinical ratio issues.
Challenge #3 addresses the increasing need of nurse scientists to continue to investigate phenomena germane to the
nursing profession with a dwindling supply of those so prepared to serve as principal investigators so as to produce rigorous
findings, evidence, for the utilization of highly skilled practitioners, such being a challenge in institution and community-
based situations.
Proposed Solutions
#l: Address increased preparation & certification in gerontology, both within hospital-based, skill-based, and home-
delivery systems, so as to decrease complications, decrease readmission to hospitals, and increase the quality of life,
including more respect for the wisdom of the elders in our society.
#2: Continue to advocate for RN-BSN programs, facilitate reduced due structures for such aggregates for increased
participation in ANA, and develop structures within ANA for faculty strengthening in practice issues. (known: NLN and
AACN do much for faculty development and teaching and simulation techniques).
#3 Readdress the reenactment or similar program -- nurse scientist program, i.e. PhD.
To date and for the future, I treasure my time and opportunity to influence, impact, and implement change through many
programs over the years. ANA provides such a solid foundation for this work, then, of its constituents. So, one key example
is my serving as charter chair and developer of the Kansas State Nurses Association's continuing education and recognition
program, l972, such eventually accredited by the ANA, now AANC. This council served as impetus for hundreds of CNE
(continuing nursing education) programs in Ks to be develop expanded classes, all areas, fo KS nurses . It also served as
the foundational document when Ks moved, first in the country to implement mandatory continuing education, to
mandatory CE, such being subsequent to the Kellogg study and others to validate, in licensure. Such programs impacted

40
institutions, increased lifelong learning for nurses, and many have also moved to specialization in the process, including
advanced practice.
This charter program, thus, served to guide the development of structures, processes, and outcome measures for the mandatory
CE for relicensure. It also serves, to this day, CE programs as a method for addressing learning needs, such gathered via
evaluation assessment systems posthoc of program offering. Signe Cooper served as our consultant.
My active involvement, major participation, and consistent support has spanned over 50 yrs in this august association,
ANA, the strong voice for all nurses and a great place to share one's gifts. I have supported the mission directed to health
care provision by continuous employment for 50 plus years as well as major community service, such addressing improving
health care, esp working with rural sites (placement of NPs in the majority of Ks counties, 28 states and 3 foreign countries)
and urban poor, including minorities and other marginalized population, e.g. helping form Council to develop housing for
the homeless. Addressment of standards of care/practice has been integral to my work, since joining the profession, i.e
policy and procedure committees to develop guidelines for thermal regulatory care for neonates, peds tech care; IV
guidelines, serving as key instructor, along with early wound care procedures; developing the first stepdown protocol (with
Dr. Crow) for post-MI patients, first advisory ethics committee for hemodialysis. In this same vein, worked diligently with
KSNA and ANA to address standards of practice, standards of care and workplace standards, via establishment in KSNA of
the Economic and General Welfare Program and Council. Such work continues to this day in the ANA.
Cultural dexterity, by nature, is substance for me, as the heritage to which I was planted taught and practiced such every
day, i.e, respect for all, help the poor, care of sick, give to the disadvantaged. I learned at my parent's knees to respect
differences, as they were different cultures, age groups, religion, political party, even language. I sensed, very young,
importance of respect for varying beliefs, customs, values, language & traditions. This upbringing has influenced me to
work constantly for inclusion, equitable representation, and communicate freely and honesty. While serving on KSNA Board

of Directors, I was part of a vetting committee and sought to bringing the first male to be employed in the association as
well as seeking minorities to run for positions. When I was a delegate, l978 and 9, state to ANA, I spoke strongly for the
addition of "lifestyle" to the Code of Ethics for Nurses. On the local level, served often, and still do, KSNA nominations
committee, so building rubrics to fairly and justly "vet" out factors in cultural backgrounds, so as to place to the ballots
diversity and representation. Such has also been my effort serving several times on the ANA Nominations and Elections

STATEMENT OF VIEWS:
The three most significant challenges facing ANA are its ability to: (1) recruit and retain new members, (2) remain relevant
to registered nurses throughout their careers, and (3) adequately develop existing members for leadership succession
locally and nationally. Although the ANA represents the interests of the nation’s registered nurses, only a fraction of them
are members. I have worked to develop and to collaborate with nurses in diverse practice settings throughout my career.
Two fundamental questions must be addressed for all nurses: (1) what does the American Nurses Association do and (2)
how does it impact me? Indisputably, the ANA is instrumental in fostering high standards of nursing practice, promoting
nurses’ workplace rights, creating a positive perception of nursing, and advocating politically on issues that affect nurses
and the public. However, a fundamental disconnect exists between the value that ANA contributes to the profession of
2020 Candidate Profile Guide
44
nursing, and nurses’ understanding of its significance to them personally. In order to thrive, the ANA must focus substantial
attention on meeting nurses where they are, at each stage of their careers, to inspire vested interest in the ANA and create
a bias for action.
In 2018, I began my two-year term as the ANA Idaho president. Throughout my tenure the board of directors (BOD) and I
have been able to accomplish so much for Idaho nurses and the association. We relocated the ANA Idaho office back to our
state, hired a new Executive Director, and partnered with other state nursing organizations to support the formation of the
Idaho Center for Nursing (ICN). Through our relationship with the ICN, we significantly cut management costs by more
than 50%, enabling us to substantially grow our savings and ensure the long-term financial stability of the association.
ANA Idaho, a pilot state for Value Pricing, saw membership increase from 240 to near 700 during this time, a trend I believe
will continue. ANA Idaho ended 2019 with 18.2% membership growth, leading all C/SNAs in the nation. In addition to
reduced cost, the ANA Idaho BOD has worked to increase the value of membership to Idaho nurses. We supported
reenergizing the Idaho Student Nursing Association, partnered with Nurse Leaders of Idaho to co-sponsor clinical and
leadership conferences, engaged on legislative issue and facilitated a greater public awareness of nurses and nursing
issues.
In 2018, during my term as president, the ANA Western Multi State Division dissolved, and we moved the headquarters of
our C/SNA back to Idaho under a new Executive Director. Together, along with the Idaho Alliance of Leaders in Nursing,
Nurse Leaders of Idaho, Nurse Practitioners of Idaho, the Council of Nurse Education leaders, and the Idaho Association of
Nurse Anesthetists, we established the Idaho Center for Nursing (ICN). ANAI’s goal was to form a collaborative group of
individual membership organizations that share information and resources to build a strong framework of cooperation on
common issues. Through the partnership of each organization’s board of directors, we have elevated the nursing
profession’s presence in addressing political and social issues that impact the health of Idaho citizens and the ability of
nursing to influence them. Aside from financial stability, the greatest outcome has been the power to state in public forums,

45
such as the Idaho Legislature, that our leadership speaks for the collective Idaho nursing community of 27,000 licensed
RNs and 3,500 LPNs, who live in every legislative district in the state.
Cultural sensitivity is important to me. I am a consistent promoter of cultural awareness education and the inclusion of diverse
groups both in my work environment and socially. The nursing association has focused on supporting diversity students in Idaho.
Our work endorsed changes in academic admission criteria to nursing schools that help provide greater opportunities to diversity
students. These efforts have seen an increased admission of Hispanic students. My home community has an expanding refugee
population and assisting them to overcome barriers to healthcare access has been an ANA Idaho focus, such as staffing free
clinics and soliciting nurses and nurse practitioners to volunteer.

STATEMENT OF VIEWS:
Three significant challenges that ANA is facing is increasing non dues revenue, consumers understanding of the nursing
profession and solving nurse staffing. During my time as ANA Director at Large Recent Graduate from January 2018-
December 2019, I was able to learn more about the impact, scope and challenges that ANA and it's C/SNA's have. Non
dues revenue was a topic discussed frequently and I worked with ANA staff to give feedback on potential new revenue
streams. Nurses need more visibility to media and to the consumer. After attending Membership Assembly in 2019, I have
heard many C/SNA's wonderful ideas on how to bring their nurses in as content experts to the media and to help consumers
understand what it is we do. I want to continue to leverage the ideas of the C/SNA's and IMD to make an impact. Lastly,
nurse staffing is continually relevant and shifting to a model of helping C/SNAs individually on staffing legislation needs
to be an imperative measure that we take . I also am the chair of my hospital's staffing committee which we are now
overhauling the process in which our committee functions and handles staffing issues.

During my time on the ANA Committee on Honorary Awards, I was able to be part of the updating of the updating of the
award categories. As a committee we were able to discuss the pros and cons of changing the awards and I suggested
keeping all of the historical information within the descriptions of the awards to be able to update the categories to be
easier to understand and relevant. This then opens up the thoughts of nurses to be able to apply or nominate others for
the awards.
I am humbled to have previously been on the ANA board as Director at Large Recent Graduate and I have continued to
enforce the mission and purpose of the organization. Even being off the board, I have been supporting ANA's efforts and I
have stayed involved with ANA-Illinois and the Illinois Nurses Foundation. I stay continually engaged online and in person
to be continue to be a leader for nursing and health care.
I have worked in multiple groups where the groups are culturally diverse. Most recently, I have been working with multiple
leaders and shared governance to enhance our staffing committee to be an optimal working committee. I was sure to be
sensitive to others thoughts on staffing and our current practices to create a working environment to make progress. We
were able to start to combine our staffing committee with our shared governance council to become one speaking body for
the hospital staff

STATEMENT OF VIEWS:
The three most significant challenges facing the ANA are recruiting, community outreach, and unity. For recruiting, the
ANA must be more proactive in reaching out to nursing school graduates in a dynamic way before they graduate as to the
importance and why they would want to be a part of the professional organization. On community outreach, the ANA can
develop stronger relationships with both local and national media. For unity, there needs to be stronger communication
between different state nurses organization (especially those within the compact). My past experiences from having been
a public servant nurse at Veterans Affairs for over 5 years, my labor experience as a Union Steward with the American
Federation of Government Employees, and international background of living in 12 cities across four different continents
has provided the diversity necessary for connecting with those of a wide background.

As a Legislative Political Coordinator with the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) from 2017-2018,
developing influential relationships with Congressional members from Texas were an imperative part of the role. AFGE at
their national triennial convention in 2018 recognized me as a National Finalist for their Ed Klein Political Action Award
related to these efforts. For ANA's Hill Day, I was able to help facilitate leading the Texas ANA members in executing
impactful meetings with members of Congress, and continuing conversations beyond hill day.
The biggest support provided to the ANA has been on being on the ANA-PAC Board of trustees, and bringing the strong
legislative/policy background to the benefit of those in the organization.
As a past Hispanic Employment Program Manager at the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center, identifying the
hiring difficulties for the Hispanic population and providing appropriate programming was at the forefront of the mission
on diversity within the facility. For efforts in 2017, the Medical Center Director recognized me with a Special Achievement
Award. This is experience that will benefit the ANA

STATEMENT OF VIEWS:
I have had the opportunity to serve the association each year since becoming a nurse at Membership Assembly. I participated at
lobby day, as an observer and candidate to the ANA Board Meeting and Membership Assembly in 2016. Then in 2017, I attended
lobby day, was an observer at the ANA Board Meeting, and served as Chair-Elect of the Nominations and Elections Committee at
Membership Assembly. My participation in 2018 included: Lobby Day, observer at the ANA Board Meeting, and was Chair of the
Nominations and Elections Committee at Membership Assembly. Last summer, 2019, I attended Lobby Day, the ANA Board
Meeting as observer, and Membership Assembly as a member of the Bylaws Committee
Throughout my term as Chair of the Nominations and Elections Committee I helped to facilitate election changes to align with
the association’s change in labor status. I developed guidelines, rubrics, and polices to guide the future sourcing, vetting, and
interviewing of candidates. It is vital that the Committee engage qualified nurse leaders to represent a diverse slate of candidates
for the membership. Ensuring the Association has candidates that meet the needs of the Board and future growth; that have
demonstrated commitment, integrity, and passion for the betterment of the profession. As Chair, I facilitated a national call sent
to the membership for applicants, garnering interest that reflects the Associations diverse membership.
s a Chair of the Shared Governance Committee on Nursing Recruitment and Retention, I worked with all levels of leadership to
engage nurses. In many of my other leadership roles I have worked to source and find candidates for succession planning and
future of the organizations. I feel it is important to exemplify professionalism, integrity, and encourage future leaders to seek
out opportunities for leadership. Through intentional leadership mentoring, nursing advances in the development of experienced
advocates that are able to move the profession and mission of the Association forward.

Throughout my nursing and leadership experiences I have strived to exemplify the mission and purpose of the American Nurses’
Association. My practice has taught me the importance of holding the profession to the highest ethical standards, promote safe
and effective work environments, as well as advocate for health care and wellness for all. Nurses have a valuable and unique
perspective that is integral in the improvement of health across all communities.
I empower nurses to take action for the advancement of healthy communities through leadership, mentoring, and advocacy. In
all aspects of my career I work to develop future leaders and promote dynamic ingenuity for the profession, patients, and
communities. Being an engaged leader has allowed me to advocate for nursing at both the national and state levels, work on
task forces and committees to improve health for all, and promote healthy dialogue for initiatives that support the mission and
values of the American Nurses Association.
As Chair of the Nominations and Elections Committee for ANA, I advocated for diversity, cultural dexterity, and inclusion
with changes to the election process. It is imperative the slate of candidates is as diverse as our membership, inclusive of
all perspectives, ensuring the future is built by those that reflect all aspects of the membership.
As President and Founder of the Emerging Nurse Professionals Chapter of the Arizona Nurses’ Association, I promote
inclusion and diversity through partnerships and engaging new to practice nurses in the professional organization.
Creating a culture of support and inclusion to promote professional retention, future leadership, and continuing
professional development. In working to support our new to practice nurses through mentorship, education specific to their
unique needs, and community development, we are able to increase resiliency and effective use of the nursing voice for the
future of the profession.
As an Advisor to the Student Nurses’ Association of Arizona, I am able to assist in the development of culturally inclusive
future nurse leaders. Engaging with students from across the state, with various backgrounds and interests, I work to help
them promote health, understand the power of the nursing voice, and instill a drive for professional advocacy.

I do not have any experience serving in ANA, however I do have vast leadership experience leading other committees and
participating with the AR Action Coalition and the AR Center for Nursing. For example in the AR Action Coalition I ran the
mentoring program and was responsible for pairing mentors with mentees across the state, regularly checking in and
collecting data for the program. I have participated in both the education and leadership arms of the AR Center for Nursing
-and was part of the team that worked on the strategic planning when the AR Action coalition became the AR Center for
Nursing. I worked on the 'Nurses on Boards" project facilitating a training at the University of AR- Fayetteville, and I have
Chaired many committees. For example, I am currently the Chair for the DEI committee for UAMS NW campus and
responsible for recruitment, running meetings and strategic planning.

I have been in a director role that required my interviewing and hiring nurses who report to me and am currently functioning
in a role like this. I think I can interview in a method that is direct, professional, respectful but most importantly is caring
and kind and can put others at ease. I did have to 'interview' mentors and mentees to make pairings that I thought would be
beneficial to both participants.
I am very passionate about facilitating access to quality health are for Arkansans. As the site PI for the HRSA Healthy Start
program I have worked to collaborate with many community partners in Carrol, Madison, Benton and Washington Counties
to improve access to care for Marshallese pregnant mothers and families. I serve on the Community Action Network Board
to problem solve barriers to access to care to increase access to healthcare for clients. I supervise a Certified Nurse Midwife
who provides direct clinical care for our Healthy start clients and mentor her in working with this special population.
I am the Chair of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee for UAMS - NW campus and we work within our
institution and in the community to improve DEI for everyone. I have been accepted as a SEED facilitator (Seeking
Educational Equity and Diversity) and will receive a week of training in July to become proficient in leading conversations
in the community to drive personal, organizational, and societal change toward social justice. I am very passionate about
DEI initiatives

• ANA: Subcommittee on Awards
• Connecticut Nursing Collaborative-Action Coalition: Advisory Board
STATEMENT OF VIEWS:
I recently had the privilege of attending ANA's 2019 Leadership Summit where I represented CNA, networked with other members and ANA leaders, cast our state's votes, and learned more about current and upcoming initiatives.
I have served two two-year terms as CNA's Leadership committee co-chair. Our leadership committee is responsible for
overseeing awards and nominations. In my capacity as the co-chair and member, I led the group in seeking qualified candidates
for elected office, interviewed potential candidates to describe the duties and responsibilities of the role in question, answered
questions, and confirmed a potential candidate's willingness and ability to serve. I presented the slate that the committee
developed for board approval.
Also, within CNA, I have developed and lead an 8-month program, SpringBoard to Board Service, that offers nurses an opportunity
to translate their nursing skill and experience to board competencies. It is our goal to facilitate board placement for our
participants, and half-way through our inaugural program, we have achieved our first board placement!
The ANA's mission is to Lead the profession to shape the future of nursing and health care . I support this mission by teaching
nurses about population health. I am a co-author of a four-module online course developed within the Connecticut Nursing
Collaborative-Action Coalition, grant-funded by RWJF/AARP and hosted by the Connecticut League for Nursing. This free course
is in use by nursing schools across the country as part of their population/public/community health curricula.

2020 Candidate Profile Guide
60
I also support this mission as a member of CNA’s Government Relations Committee, which monitors the legislative environment
and provides testimony on potential legislation that could impact the profession or the health of the public.
Finally, I support this mission by working diligently to put nurses on boards. I support the Nurses on Boards Coalition by
developing and launching an 8-month, hybrid program that teaches nurses to translate their nursing experience and knowledge
to board competencies. Gaining a seat on a board can enable a nurse to advocate for the health, wellness, and best interests of
constituents and communities.
In the Red Cross, we have a guiding philosophy: “All are welcome”. All volunteers and clients are welcome to provide and receive
humanitarian aid. I strive to reflect that inclusive philosophy in my life.
My Action Coalition and DNP scholarly work involved understanding and creating swifter pathways for nurses with ADNs to
complete BSNs. I examined academic progression in long term care. Older adults are a vulnerable population, and the ADN
degree provides a pathway into nursing that is more affordable than a BSN for many potential nurses who represent diversity of
culture and race. Both of these populations benefit from efforts like my Action Coalition’s efforts to streamline academic
progression.
Similarly, I am leading a pilot program to create an affiliation with CNA and LPNs for the purpose of education, advocacy, and
academic advisement. I began my nursing career as an LPN and I believe that LPNs are not only our colleagues but a vital pool
of potential RNs.
In my current nurses on boards effort, we have been able to achieve diversity within our first cohort by offering scholarships
through our Black and Hispanic nurses’ organizations in the state. We expect to directly contribute to diversity on boards.

STATEMENT OF VIEWS:
I have served on the ANA board of directors since 2017. My term will end December 2020. I am very familiar with the inner
workings of ANA's Membership Assembly
I have worked on quite a few committees that were responsible for sourcing candidates for selection on to boards, CEO
selection for ANA, for multiple other committee positions for ANA, for other nursing organizations national and local
and for the Veterans Affairs to select NP candidates for selection into different positions. While serving on these
committee selections were made based on the criteria for the position to which they were applying free from bias.

I have supported, served and committed my time and knowledge on the Board of Directors for ANA for more than 3 years.
I have also served on and or chaired committees for the association as assigned by the President of ANA. I am working
with my state association currently and plan to begin working on their CE committee; with future plans to join their finance
committee. I have made substantial changes to the national awards programs to continue to promote the great
accomplishments of registered nurses that deliver care daily. I also had the distinct pleasure and honor to assist in selecting
the current CEO for the association. I continue to work hard volunteering to help the association make great strides in
"shaping the future of nursing and healthcare
I have assisted my organization and other organizations in becoming aware of the great work that ANA is doing with
workplace violence, staffing, and most recently with year of the nurse 2020 to name a few. I have informed organizations
and individual nurses other things that ANA is doing such as Lobby day. I encouraged to become more involved in policy
development so that we as nurses can make true changes in healthcare.

I have served on the Nominations Committee for the Michigan Council of Nurse Practitioners ( MICNP) 2018 .
I served on the ANA-Michigan nominations committee 2016 -2018 and then again from 2019 to present.
The biggest challenge I found on being on a nomination's committee is finding eligible candidates and ensuring nominees
understand the scope and responsibilities of the position.
I have also been involved four different searches for CEOs of the nonprofit organizations: Michigan Nurses Association
( 1999) MICNP (2011) , ANA-Michigan (2014) ,and most recently the ANA Enterprise while on the ANA Board(2018). All these
searches required the various boards to focus on the future needs of our associations and each one had its unique points
that needed to be negotiated and compromised. Of the four searches the first had the most unfortunate outcome. That
particular experience taught me a great deal about the exquisite attention that must be paid to in regards to resumes,
vetting process CEO evaluations and monitoring the contract,.
The mission of the ANA is “Lead the profession to shape the future of nursing and health care.” I would say my life’s work
in nursing embodies this mission. I joined the ANA upon receiving my RN license and have been a member ever since over
45 years!
I started being active at the district level very early in my career and have taken on roles of increasing responsibility and
leadership ever since. I have served on the board of directors for district, state and national organizations. I have served
as President for ANA-MI and MICNP (NP association) These opportunities have enabled me to be a strong voice in advancing
the nursing profession at all levels.
But what really drives me, what has been my life’s work, has been improving healthcare for all no matter what practice
setting or environment. I have had a particular focus on vulnerable and disadvantaged populations and have worked with
migrant workers, the homeless population, incarcerated patients, and pregnant teens. I was very involved with the local
community mental health board advocating for integrated healthcare clinic to the chronically mentally ill. This clinic was
created two years after I left that board and after I retired from the VA, I practiced there for 2 year

Cultural dexterity is an advanced level of inclusiveness that lends depth to the work of the Board of Directors. I have always,
actively encouraged nurses from many different backgrounds and practice settings to participate in our professional
organization.
As an example, when I served as the President of ANA-MI, I led the initiative to engage with the state-associated nursing student
organizations. It is important to encourage them to get involved and get connected because they are the future of nursing! We
need to focus on younger nurses so they can continue the important work of the delivery of health care and leadership in their
communities.
A few of the specific things we did were:
· Offer services: Appointed a Board liaison to engage with MNSA board meetings so they had a direct point of contact at
ANAMI.
· Provided space: Gave MNSA access to meeting space, in our office so they would have a consistent environment for
organizational activities.
· Speaking engagements: Over the years I have spoken to schools of nursing and the MNSA leadership directly and
encouraged these emerging nurse leaders to explore all the options they have in nursing so they could reach their full
potential whether that was in administration, academia or clinical practices

The function of the Faculty Search Committee, is to recruit, screen, and recommend the best candidates for a needed
position. As a current member of the Committee, my role consists of screening applications to determine if applicant s
meet minimum qualifications. If applicants meet the minimum requirements, screening interviews are conducted. The first
interview takes place virtually using a video platform. If a candidate is deemed to be a potential fit for the College of
Nursing, a follow-up face-to-face interview is scheduled. In addition to participating on the Faculty Search Committee, my
role as a Lead Faculty member requires me to be involved in recruiting, screening and choosing candidates for MUSC’s DNP
Programs.
In my previous position, as Director of Patient Care, I participated in the recruiting and hiring of various levels of
personnel; this included directors, managers and nursing staff. In addition to my experience in recruiting and interviewing,
I am well versed in the legal implications of hiring and have participated in Human Resource workshops and training sessions
that focused on lawful interviewing best practices.
I learned early in my career that, as a bedside nurse I could touch the lives of my patients and their families. Later,
transitioning into a nurse leadership role, it allowed me to widen my purview and impact many patients by working to
advance the standards of care. Presently, in an academic role, the impact can turn to the future of nursing. As a nurse
educator, my role is not only as teacher, but to generate new knowledge, disseminate the findings and assist in the
translation of that evidence into practice. The most satisfying part of my faculty role comes from mentoring new faculty
and students, participating in community programs to improve health outcomes, making professional contributions and
advocating for the profession.
There are close to four million nurses in the United States. There is power in numbers. My current role, as a lead faculty for
nursing leaders allows me to shape and empower nursing leaders and give them the skillset, confidence and courage they
need to promote the profession of nursing at the highest level. In the words of astronaut/teacher Christa McAuliffe, “ I touch
the future. I teach.”

Kean University, where I completed my education and taught, stands among the top five most diverse universities in the nation.
The school of nursing based its curriculum on nursing theorist Madeleine Leininger’s concept of transcultural nursing. Culturally
competent care was threaded through my undergrad and graduated education. In addition to receiving a diverse and culturally
advanced education, my current position is at an academic institution that highly values the positive aspects of having a diverse
workplace environment.
In the last year, I have participated in over 25 hours of continuing education focusing on diversity. This included an
immersive cultural simulation experience, diversity and openness lecture series, an unconscious bias workshop and additional
diversity training.
In 2016, I spent three weeks in Dhaka, Bangladesh working with the nursing faculty from the International Nursing College.
Together, we evaluated and developed a curriculum for an MSN Program. This afforded me the opportunity to see firsthand the
needs of the vulnerable and disproportionate population of the country. The experience strengthened my beliefs and reinforced
my view that all people regardless of religion, cultural background or ethnicity are similar in more ways than they are different
and belong to the common group of humankind.

I have extensive experience in my various leadership positions in the area of sourcing and interviewing candidates. I have used
a variety of interviewing techniques over the years including, interviewing for empathy, and using behavioral interview
techniques
The mission of the ANA is to "lead the profession to shape the future of nursing and health care".
I support the mission and purpose of the organization by engaging in the grass roots efforts to shape nursing. This
involves being connected to the events supported by the ANA and the ISNA. I have attended the local events such as the
annual convention, annual fundraiser luncheon, and involving local nurses in the work. I also support nursing policy
priorities by engaging in the events at the legislative level and making my voice heard.
In order to create an inclusive environment in my professional employment, I engage nurses at all levels and include them in
the efforts to strengthen and drive the nursing profession. This involves including nurses with different political viewpoints,
genders, gender identities, cultural or ethnic backgrounds into the work of driving nursing initiatives and improving the
profession.

the importance and diligence needed for a nomination committee member. IT is crucial to find, solicit, nominate and evaluate
individuals that can represent the broad association community and views
I am comfortable with seeking individuals through conferences, other committee meetings, reputation, networking,
publications and approaching them to serve. I have used several templates to interview individuals but the best method I
have found is to talk with the individual and cultivate the information/characteristics I am looking for. Templates and
scripted questions tend to limit ability to get candid information - although there are times you are limited, and a template
caner serve as guide.
Throughout my career I have supported, espoused and participated in the ANA and my state associations. Having moved
throughout the country, I have been able to offer alternatives, comparisons, contacts, experiences from a variety of
different orgs. Notwithstanding I have participated in and supported nursing and the nursing profession wherever I have
been in my workplace as well as community.
I have had the great opportunity to work with some of the most expert individuals within and outside our profession that
are leaders in diversity and inclusion in the workforce, education, and associations. They have given me a keen and
"enlightened" perspective in regard to the recruitment, inclusion, cultivation and leading a purposefully diverse and
inclusive workforce/groups. As a leader, executive, consultant and educator, I have used the knowledge these individuals
have cultivated within me and am always aware of the need to stop, create, change, influence, re-think, any process,
nominations systems, selection, membership based on the ability to foster, find, encourage, seek out, create self-
nominating environments for all individuals
