The process of building a piece of furniture is just as important to me as how it looks in the end. All the solid

wood I use had a story before it came to my shop. My goal is to build on that story, to see the characteristics in the wood

and what it wants to become. I think of my work not based in machines and numbers, but as a completely creative

process, as if I am painting.

Owner Ethan Abramson’s creative process allows for the materials, as much as function,

to influence designs. All furniture is built using a blend of classic and modern

woodworking techniques. Designs and shop practices are built around the idea of

minimal waste, re-purposing, and environmentally conscious production methods.

Art has a role to play in the development of Africa, and my work reflects this conviction…My aim is design that exposes

the realities of modern Africa, to provide a key point in a continent which suffers from imports and all kinds of

imitation furniture…

Hamed's designs pay homage to his cultural ties. In response to his environment,

where oil barrels in popping primary colors are discarded after use, Hamed thoroughly

sanitizes, then hammers, shapes and repurposes them by hand. The hinges, nails and

tools necessary for each piece are crafted in his studio, meaning that every detail is

carefully considered and utterly bespoke.

German designer Magnus Mewes’ reimagining journey began while helping to store

disused wine and whisky barrels on his wife Carolin Bergdolt’s vineyard. There came

the idea for ‘Barrique Limited,’ a collection of tables and seating furniture made 100%

from oak barrels. Mewes continues to create stools, chairs and tables made from this

innovative and unique material.

When I pull from my reclaimed wood heap, full of history, it’s not just enough to pull it, I always check where the woods

came from.

Rodrigo Calixto's approach to the carpentry trade comes from living with his father

who liked to handle wood, fix objects and manufacture as many for family use. Over a

ten year period, the Oficina Ethos Workshop has become a kind of laboratory where

the composition of works move between design and the fine arts without establishing

which language predominates.

I have been designing and constructing new furniture with the aim of lavishing attention on once discarded, broken and

over-looked objects. The main rule I have set myself is to only use objects that no longer fulfil the purpose for which

they were originally created, and to make the unwanted wanted again.

Rupert Blanchard is a designer, maker and collector. He moved to London in 1999 and

quickly discovered that the streets were paved “not with gold, but with rubbish.”

Rupert Blanchard spends his days going to car boots sales, thrift shops and industrial

waste sites, salvaging finds and upcycling them into industrial-style furniture. These

found materials combine to create pieces more valuable than the sum of their parts.

I was brought up among rituals rooted in the beliefs of the ancient Slavs. I think that is why I am interested in a kind of

under the M.F.E.O. brand.

Soon after meeting, Aaron and Claire Holland dreamt of launching a small, design-based

venture when Aaron’s grandfather offered them his dilapidated century old barn as a material

The community of people designing and building in Chicago is great – small enough to really foster personal connections

but large enough to have a ton of variety. The history of Chicago is also really inspiring to me – not just the

design/architectural tradition but the history of manufacturing, craftsmanship and construction.

Jason Lewis grew up in a midwestern family of engineers and builders and has been making

things with wood since he was a kid. He learned the craft and practice of building fine furniture

as an apprentice to a local woodworker and went on to open his own studio in 2001. His work

draws from the traditional fine woodworking technique and the simple midcentury design that

first inspired him.

industrial style movement — we love it!

Olde Good Things’ inventory features merchandise salvaged largely from pre-depression and

late nineteenth century buildings. OGT began by "dumpster diving" and finding unique

architectural items in the trash. As they grew they worked with demolition contractors and

became known for retrieving artifacts and materials such as flooring from notable buildings.

…The wood begins deeply cracked and punctuated with nail holes. While the voids are filled and the lumber is worked,

the completed piece becomes covered with softly patterned points and calligraphic lines…

Since its founding in 2001, Platform has been continually evolving and morphing to respond to

the creative output of its founder, Zach Hadlock - an artist, designer and craftsman. Zach

established Platform Furniture and Fabrication as he further expanded his scope of work from

artwork to include designing and producing furniture. Drawing on influences from American

Colonial and Shaker furniture to Minimalist sculpture and Danish modern design, Platform’s

work characterizes a clean, contemporary aesthetic and tradition of American woodworking.

We make furniture, but we also build railroads. It all starts on the tracks when we get a rail renovation project. We reclaim

sections of steel from industrial jobs and repurpose them into tables, desk, beds and other furniture. We had to

develop unique methods of historic preservation that fulfilled our personal commitment to sustainability and quality in

order to be proud of the product that we create at Rail Yard Studios.

Robert Hendrick began building tables and benches in his parents’ garage. Equal parts

nostalgia and passion, designing and making gave Hendrick and his father the

opportunity to make a career together. While also owning a small railroad construction

company, he was able to teach a few of his crew to build furniture. From there, Rail

Yard Studios was born.

Recycled Brooklyn is a furniture design and home goods company founded by two

brothers dedicated to producing sustainable, eco-friendly products. Started in Steve's

kitchen with no thought to making it a full-time endeavor, the response to their

handmade wares was made it clear that the practice of reclaiming and reusing existing

materials was the future and not just a fad.

A major source of inspiration in reusing materials for Revampt came from Design Build

Bluff, a non-profit organization providing architecture students the opportunity to

design and build homes for impoverished families on the Navajo reservation. Learning

to work as a group, locate abundant reclaimed resources, and hand build homes was

an experience for founder Daniel Louis that carried on to influence Revampt’s mission.

Many large-scale furniture manufacturers cut away ‘nature’s imperfections’ in the wood they use, while we at Saltwoods

consider these markings to be the “salt” of life, unique features that lend character and beauty to our products.

The name Saltwoods was born after working on a salvaged piece of white oak from

the Boston navy shipyards with infrastructure dating back to the 18th century. Much of

the framework had collapsed into the saltwater. Over decades, the saltwater protected

the wood from oxygen and preserved the old-growth lumber. The wood used in this

first project inspired Dan to celebrate the use of reclaimed and salvaged materials.

After a fire nearly destroyed owners Jeff and Robin Janson’s 1890s farmhouse, they began

their hunt for architectural materials that would restore their home to its original character

and integrity. As their collection of doors, moldings, and tin ceilings grew, they found

themselves helping friends and downtown business owners with their own restoration

projects. This local success coupled with their love for creating something new and surprising

Before the 20th century, Heart Pine was heavily culled from the virgin pine forests that once covered 90 million acres of the southeastern US. These trees reached 175 feet and could

live for half a millennia. Even King George I marked Pine trees to become the giant masts of the royal naval

battleships. These forests fueled America’s Industrial Revolution. Today, less than 5% remains of the old growth

Pine forests…

After working for a few years as a restoration carpenter, Stephan Wain discovered a

love for working with old materials. Such materials drove him to experiment with

different styles and designs. It wasn’t long before this backyard hobby quickly turned

into a full-time business.

West Barnstable Tables was established on historic Cape Cod in 1970. The founders,

Dick Kiusalas and Steve Whittlesey, shared a desire to build easy to live with, creative

furniture from old wood and other materials that could be salvaged from dismantled

Automobile roof panels – rusting away in scrap yards – have numerous layers of color…The layers consist of bare steel,

rust protective coating, primer, paint, clear coat. Gradually exposing these layers reveals a beautiful painting…

Kiel Arto Design is a collaboration between artist Kristaps Gulbis of Latvia and

construction manager Peter Kalnins of the USA. Kristaps and Peter have known each

other for years, bringing together their contrasting experience and common interest in

materials and craftsmanship. The result is an innovative approach to upcycling used

metal from car roofs. Reclaimed automotive steel is given a new life, creating a

functional piece of art: a table.
