twenty-four magazine page 18

Writers have always had to
deal with word limits, but today
such limits are becoming an
almost instinctive component omodern communication. Tweets
and text messages are limited
to 140 characters, and we are
learning to ration not just our
words but also our letters.
Limits change both the way
we talk and the way we think.
The need to ft an idea into a
defned space shapes our per-
ceptions and conclusions. There
is only so much complexity thatcan ft into 100 words. In this
issue o twenty-four magazine, I
am exploring the reedom ound
in those boundaries.

Cocktail One
2 oz Absolut Boston vodka
1 oz lime juice
3/4 oz St. Germain
1/4 oz Chambord
To build the drink, fll an Old Fashioned glass with crushed ice.
Shake together the vodka, lemon, and St. Germain or 10 seconds and pour into
the Old Fashioned over the ice. It still looks virginal, as i you were just having a bit
o soda water on ice, but to make sure people know how hard you worked, drizzle
the Chambord down the center o the glass rom a jigger, so they see the blood and
love that went into the drink.
Serve with a straw or stirring in the Chambord (otherwise it will eventually settle
to the bottom o the glass).
This plays with the original Gin Bramble, keeping the construction and propor-
tions, but changing ingredients.

To build the drink, run some orange juice

Strain the brandy into a mixing tin and add
all the ingredients but the bitters. Shake for
10 seconds, then strain into the sugared
glass and top with the bitters.
This is based on the Pegu Club, but takes
some liberties with how you get the right
favors into the drink.
