    SMITH METER® TURBINE METERSThe Smith Meter® MV Series Turbine Meter is intended forthe measurement of crude oils and other products having arelatively wide range of viscosities. It provides highly accu-rate measurement for custody transfer and volume balancepipeline applications. The design of the helical rotor makesthe MV Series a valuable asset for any pipeline application.

    FE TURES

    » Titanium swept-front helical rotor swept frontdesign allows for increased meter factor stabilitywhile minimizing the effects of containments ordebris.

    » Stainless steel interchangeable measuringelement provides for ease of serviceability whileproviding corrosion-free service.

    » Tungsten carbide bearings provide long ser-vice life and dependability on a wide variety of

    products. » N CE Compliance to MR0175/ISO 15126-1.

    OPER TING SPECIFIC TIONSThe Smith Meter MV Series Turbine Meter is a ReynoldsNumber dependent measurement device which accuratelymeasures over a wide measurement turndown range.The Measurement Turndown Range (MTR) of all turbinemeters is dependent upon both the Flow Range and theViscosity Range for a given application. The ratio of FlowRange to Viscosity Range is expressed in Reynolds Number.The MTR is then determined by using the ratio of themaximum Reynolds (Re max ) number over the minimumReynolds (Re min) number.

    Reynolds number is calculated using the followingequations:

    The minimum Reynolds number will determine themeasurement turndown over which the meter canaccurately measure.

    Minimum Back PressureIn order to prevent cavitation, PI MPMS. Chapter 5 rec-ommends a minimum back pressure according to thefollowing:

    BP = (2 x ∆P) + 1.25 Vp

    Where: BP = Minimum back pressure ∆P = Pressure drop at maximum ow rate Vp = bsolute vapor pressure at operating

    temperatureExample:6" MV at 4,000 BPH - ∆P = 4 psi.

    bsolute vapor pressure of crude oil at operating tempera-ture - Vp = 5 psia.

    Min. BP = (2 x 4) + 1.25 (5) = 14.25 psi

    Pressure Drop CorrectionFor liquids with other than 1.0 cP viscosity and/or 1.0specic gravity, the meter pressure drop can be estimatedby the following equation:

    ∆P = PD X µ 1/4 X (sp. gr.) 3/4

    Where: PD = Pressure drop from chart at desiredow rate.

    µ = bsolute viscosity (cP or mPa•s)

    sp. gr. = Specic Gravity

    Example:6" meter at 4,000 BPH, 50 cP, 0.9 sp. gr.

    ∆P = 4 psi (from chart) (50) 1/4 X (0.9)3/4

    ∆P = 9.8 psi.
