Paul and Sonia Tanham are
celebrating their 60th wedding
anniversary on the 19th August.
They came to the Holy Rosary
Parish in 1966 with four children
and two more children were born
while they lived in Woodlands. All
of their six children and seven of
their grandchildren have been
educated in Holy Rosary school,
Siena, Marist Brothers and now
Newman College. Paul and Sonia
have been part of the Holy Rosary
Parish for the past 48 years and
they have seen many changes over
the years including the building of
the church. They look forward to
many more years at the church
and in the area.
Self-sacrificing Love
Within a decade after the end of the Second Vatican Council an astonishing array of liturgical rites had been revised and adopted. Among them was the marriage rite. There may be room for regret that the new ceremony did not keep the exhortation that used to be read. Here’s a tiny excerpt that speaks about self-sacrificing love in marriage, concluding with a quote in archaic language. It is worth wondering how its wisdom relates to the daring generosity of the two widows we encounter in today’s readings, along with Jesus himself.
“Henceforth, you will belong entirely to each other; you will be one in mind, one in heart, and one in affections. And whatever sacrifices you may hereafter be required to make to preserve this common life, always make them generously. Sacrifice is usually difficult and irksome. Only love can make it easy; and perfect love can make it a joy … God so loved the World that He gave His only begotten Son; and the Son so loved us that He gave Himself for our salvation. ‘Greater love than this no man hath, that a man lay down his life for his friends.’”

November Prayers for Deceased
Envelopes are available on the seats and on the table in the church foyer.
Saint of the Week St Josaphat, Bishop, Martyr
St Josaphat was born in Lithuania about 1580
into a Catholic family and early on promoted
Catholic unity in a country divided between
Orthodox and Catholic. He entered the
Byzantine monastery of Holy Trinity in Vilna
in 1604 and was elected Catholic archbishop
of Polotsk in 1614. While clinging firmly to
unity with Rome, he firmly opposed those
Latins who saw unity only in Latin terms and
would suppress Byzantine traditions in the
name of Catholic unity. He firmly opposed
the Latinization of his people and made
enemies and severe critics among the Latin
clergy of Poland.
Politically, the Catholic and Orthodox clergy
were rivals in Lithuania, and the
archbishopric of Polotsk was one of the
contested sees. An Orthodox archbishop of
Polotsk was appointed, and Josaphat was
accused of taking office invalidly. Many of
his Byzantine Catholics were won over to
allegiance to Orthodoxy. Even the king of
Poland wavered in his support of Josaphat,
especially when Polish bishops accused him
of betraying his faith by not Latinising his
diocese.
One of the hotbeds of trouble in Josaphat's
diocese was Vitebsk, and in November of
1623 he went there to bring about peace in his
flock, preaching in the churches and trying to
reconcile differences. On November 12, a
mob broke into the house where he was
staying, shouting hatred and violence. When
he confronted them, he was struck in the head
with a halberd and shot. His mangled body
was dragged out and thrown into the river. He
was canonised by Pope Pius IX in 1867.

Kids Corner
The Dominican Laity is a group of dedicated followers of St Dominic’s example while living and working in the secular world. Organised in chapters, the Dominic Laity has been active in our parish for 40 to 50 years, working alongside the Dominican religious orders.
Our parish group meets monthly to pray, read the New Testament and generally help each other with faith development. Its members also enjoy regular social contact with the Dominican priests and nuns.
The group is guided by a simple, joyous, down-to-earth spirituality centred on God’s grace and mercy. It aims to foster a richer relationship with God in its own ranks and to share that with the wider community. Much effort goes into praying for the work of the Church and the Dominican Order in spreading the Gospel message.
To join or find out more about the Dominican Laity, contact Terry Cole on 94099616 and email [email protected] or June Ross on 93443287 and email [email protected]
