#33 Journal 10/30• Macbeth has killed Banquo, his good friend.
Even though he did not perform the act himself, Banquo’s blood is still on Macbeth’s hands. This is an act of betrayal. Can you describe a time when you either were betrayed by a friend or loved one or a time when you were the one who betrayed a friend or loved one. How did you feel before, during and after the act? Do you regret the betrayal? Have you been able to mend your relationship following the betrayal?

• Describe the following two images of Hecate. The first is an artist rendering, the other is from a Lincoln Center production of Macbeth. Describe both images and what they suggest about the “queen of the witches.”
• Also, think about the portrayal of gender roles in the play. Is it significant that the only female characters are supernatural and the strange Lady Macbeth?
