Dear Friends,
Mission is what we are called to do. We are all called to proclaim the Gospel to all people,
not just to those around us but also to the greater church we belong to. We belong to the
universal church, that is, the Catholic Church. For this reason, I find joy in serving our parish
and the Archdiocese here in the US. I always considered myself a missionary. As all of you
know, I was raised in the Philippines and have undergone most of my seminary formation
there. I was blessed to be given the opportunity to be here and serve in the Archdiocese of
Portland and have my home and ministry here at Holy Family.
I am also grateful to all those who have been part of my vocation not just here but also
those in the Philippines most especially my former diocese in the Philippines, the Diocese
of Virac. I was with them since my high school seminary years until I moved here for my post
graduate. I still maintain connections there. When I went back home last September, a
classmate of mine asked for some help in building a mission church. Understanding their
needs there and knowing our mission here at the parish too, I presented the request to the
Pastoral Council and the Knights of Columbus and they agreed to support this project.
As such, the Knights has offered to give the net profit of our Pancake Breakfast this Sunday
to this worthy cause. I invite you to please come to the Pancake breakfast to support this
mission. I thank the Knights for their generosity and support. There is a poster with more
information in Celebration Hall. Look for the easel during breakfast today.
Here is an excerpt of their request: “The pressing necessities to take good care of the flock
this trying moments of modernism and proliferation of sects, inspires the bishop to make
Brgy. Tilod a Mission Church to provide for the spiritual needs of the faithful in the southern
tip of… Baras, Catanduanes, Philippines. The plan entails undergoing a lot of preparation
both spiritually and materially on part of the people. Urgently, it demands a bigger chapel
along with its landscape and construction of a convent residence for the priest assigned in
the place. Our efforts alone, small village we are, despite giving our best service, cannot
bring this project to completion…. Thus, we are soliciting from your blessed and generous
hearts a help and support of the realization of our dreams…. Thank you….”
Blessings,
Fr. Rodel

Gospel Reflection 33nd Sunday in Ordinary Time— Luke 23: 35-43
As we celebrate the last Sunday of the Church year, we hear a story about Jesus’ great love. When he was suffering and dying, he reached out in love to the man we now call “the good thief.” Jesus promised him eternal life in heaven.
How were the two criminals different?
Why do you think “the good thief” asked Jesus to
remember him as he entered his kingdom?
Is there a way you can be like Christ, the forgiving
and loving King?
