The new, old Austin…Each week I email my column to buddies near
and far…and I just got an email from an old Austin friend, Hudson Harkins, who moved his band The Hoo Doo Cats to St. Louis many years ago. Hudson wrote, “Hey Ronnie, Great to get these articles of yours. You guys sure are sportin’ some good music in your area! Looks like Port Aransas is the new, old Austin.” Yup Hud, my old friend, that’s why I live here; that, and the traffic really sucks in Austin. Stick around long enough and the world comes to you. Let’s roll…
John Arthur Martinez
The “surprise band of the week” goes to John Arthur Martinez (Marble Falls, TX). First of all, I want to commend Susan Powell on the strength of her Thursday night bands at the Back Porch. So far, every one has been a keeper (Emory Quinn and Texas Renegade, plus Uncle Lucius and Clay McClinton are coming up soon.) Martinez played there last Thursday and was more than impressive… far more. The band was a three piece: Martinez on acoustic guitar and vocals, Kurt Baumer on violin and back-up vocals, and Brazilian percussionist, Luiz Coutinho de Souza. I’ve got to say, this mix of instruments combined with Martinez’s beautiful voice and touching original songs made for a night of amazing music. (Some of the songs he performed were co-written with the brilliant wordsmith, Mike Blakely). Martinez may be from central Texas and wear a big cowboy hat and boots, but his music is anything but stereotypical. In fact, some of it could be classified as “world beat.” This is definitely an artist to keep an eye on. What a pleasant surprise!
Six Market Boulevard
Six Market Boulevard (Stephenville, TX) played the Back Porch last Friday. The band was formed in 2008 at Tarlington State University in Stephenville and consists of Clayton Landau (lead vocals, harmony, rhythm guitar), Josh Serrato (lead and 12 string guitar, harmony, piano and organ), Ben Hussey (lead vocals, harmony, electric bass, stand up bass) and Dallas Neal (drums and percussion). The term everyone is latching onto these days is Americana but what I’m hearing here is good old rock and roll with a hint of country. The formula has worked well for such artists as Stoney LaRue, Wade Bowen, Jason Boland and Reckless Kelly and it seems to be working for Six Market Boulevard. They have a couple
of CD’s out, tour across the state and are on the radio charts. And, by the looks of the dance floor at the Porch last Friday, they’re doing something right. With such fun energy and rockin’ songs they should go far.
Derailers
The storied Derailers (Austin, TX) played the Back Porch last Saturday night to a packed house. This band has been honky tonkin’ Austin for decades and is a mainstay at the famous Broken Spoke (whose musical history dates back to Bob Wills). Although the dance floor at the Porch is a little small for a band like the Derailers, the crowd more than showed their enthusiasm. It’s easy to see the influence of Buck Owens, George Jones, Roy Orbison, Elvis Presley and Charlie Rich.
Ule JacksonI had forgotten how good Ule Jackson (Texas
Hill Country) was until I heard him play the Tarpon Ice House last weekend. His solo show is a lesson in preferred folk songs: Townes Van Zandt, John Prine, Guy Clark, etc. And he’s playing the obscure tracks, not just the hits. He has a deep strong voice and a well honed picking style that was very engaging. Like a true troubadour, Ule hit the island unannounced but managed to play several gigs and jams while he was here…truly a man who lives to play his music.
DO NOT MISS LIST
This weekend is packed with choices…There is a ton of music in our part of the
world this weekend (June 7, 8 and 9). Take a deep breath, here we go. First and foremost, the Rockport Music Festival starts tonight (Thursday, June 7) with performances by the legendary Delbert McClinton (Ft. Worth, TX) and Austin’s hippiest chick, Toni Price. Tomorrow night (Friday, June 8) the fest goes country with the great Rodney Crowell (Nashville, TN) and rising star, Hayes Carll (Austin, TX). And on Saturday, June 9th, all heck breaks loose with a stellar musical line-up that includes the phenomenal Los Lobos
(East Los Angeles, CA), Louisiana roots rocker, Marcia Ball (Austin, TX), The Blues Broads featuring Traci Nelson (Nashville, TN) and Angela Strehli (San Francisco, CA), Greezy Wheels (Austin, TX) and the RMF All Stars: Derek O’Brien, David Grissom and Chris Layton (all from Austin, TX). All of the acts leading up to Los Lobos at 9:00 p.m. are music compadres and it’s a fair bet we’ll see a lot of stage sharing going on. Also, Armadillo World Headquarters icons, Greezy Wheels will be playing the Back Porch tomorrow night (Friday, June 8th); zombie honky tonker, Jesse Dayton (Austin, TX) will be there on Saturday, June 9th
and Americana rockers, Emory Quinn (San Antonio, TX), will be there tonight (Thursday, June 7th). Still with me? Aqua Vox, the new surf/ Brit pop band from Port A will play Sunset Sounds summer outdoor series in Roberts Point Park tomorrow (Friday, June 8th) at 7:00 p.m. Sunset Sounds is hosted by Gary Masorski at Port Aransas Parks and Recreation and is a free event. Thank you Gary for your ongoing support of coastal bend artists, staged in one of America’s loveliest settings! Additionally, the very cool band, Reba and Her Naked Sisters (Austin, TX) will be at the Tarpon Ice House on Saturday, AND the great Austin folk stars Christine Albert and Chris Gage will be at the Third Coast Theater in Port A, also on Saturday. Decisions. Decisions. If you can’t find something in there to entertain you, then you must be dead. I wish I could clone myself.
On the near horizon…On following weekends we have EVEN MORE
spectacular shows to look forward to. On Saturday, June 16th, Pat Green, The Turnpike Troubadours and Cody Johnson will play the Texas Game Wardens Association fishing tournament in the pavilion at Roberts Point Park. Also on the 16th, Houston Marchman will be at the Back Porch, and Terri Hendrix and Lloyd Maines will play at the House of Rock with songwriting ace/ record producer extraordinaire, Jack Saunders. On June 22nd, the Queen of Rockabilly, Wanda Jackson, will be at House of Rock, and on June 23rd, the king of Tex Mex, Joe King Carrasco will play the Back Porch. So much music, so little time!
And that’s the truth!
