To register, return the flyer to the Extension

Office with payment by January 15, 2016. Volunteer Screening 2016 is the year that all 4-H

volunteers (any adult assisting

with 4-H activities) are required

to complete the 4-H Volunteer

Screening. Forms will be sent to

all Madison County adult volunteers. Completed

forms are to be submitted to the State 4-H

Department no later than June 1, 2016.

Quilt of Valor

Love to quilt or interested in

trying a sample? Madison

County is making a Quilt of

Valor to be given to a soldier or veteran.

You can take the block with you or use the

machines at the Office.

date. We would like to start in January.

Teen Leaders Needed!

Nebraska 4-H is seeking three teens 4-H age 14-18

to serve as leaders for the 2016 4-H Agriculture

Innovators Experience: Honeybee Challenge.

Youth will participate in a STEM activity while

gaining awareness in agricultural careers. To be

nominated, teens must:

Have a positive attitude and be excited about

teaching others

Be of 4-H age 14-18

Be able to attend a national training February

26-28 in Chevy Chase, MD. (Expenses paid

by National 4-H Council)

Be willing and available to lead a training for

other teens on March 12, 2016, in Lincoln

The teens will receive:

Travel and lodging for training in Chevy

Chase, MD

A toolkit to conduct the Challenge Activity,

Ban on Poultry Show’s Lifted!

As of January 1, 2016, the Nebraska

Department of Agriculture (NDA)

has officially lifted the ban on

poultry shows, fairs and exhibitions

that was put in place to prevent the

spread of highly pathogenic H5N2

avian influenza (HP AI) last year.

Youth Philanthropy Contest Gives Kids a

Chance to Make A Difference

The Philanthropy Council of Northeast Nebraska is

encouraging young people from Kindergarten to age

25 to think about how they can make the world a

better place by participating in the Youth

Philanthropy Contest. Students can use their

creativity, compassion, and love of their community

to make a difference.

More About The Youth Philanthropy Contest...

10 Contest winners will receive up to $1,000 to

complete their projects.

Applications are due February 6, 2016.

Students in grades K - age 25 are eligible.

Individuals, small groups, clubs and classrooms

are all invited to participate.

Fifth Annual Innovative

Youth Corn Challenge

Nebraska Extension and the

Nebraska Corn Board are

offering the fifth Innovative

Youth Corn Challenge contest,

open to 4-H members (age 10 & older as of Jan. 1)

or FFA members (in-school members).

As a team, youth will implement a production

practice different than normal to determine if they

increased their yield. Economics and sustainability

of the practice will be considered, as well as yields,

cropping history, and production information.

Cash prizes and plaques will be given to the first,

second, and third place teams. First place will

receive $1,000, second place $500, and third place

$250. Sustainability, crop scouting and “extra mile”

awards will also be given, each worth $200.

To participate in 2016, youth must complete and

return an entry form by March 15 to the Fillmore

County Extension Office in Geneva, NE. Forms

4-H Culinary Challenge 2016

Demonstrate healthy decisions making through

nutrition, menu planning, food preparation, and

food safety! Teams of two are challenged with

the ingredient SQUASH, including summer or

winter squash, pumpkin, and zucchini.

Youth ages 10 to 18 are encouraged to think

ahead to participate in the 4-H Culinary

Challenge Contest on

August 27, 2016. Madison

County would love to be

represented at this year’s

Beef Weigh In

Beef weigh-in is set for Monday, February 15 at

the Madison County Fairgrounds from 5 p.m. to

7 p.m. Please call Sarah at 402-370-4040 to let

her know how many cattle you will be bringing.

Weigh-in includes all market beef to be exhibited at

the Nebraska State Fair and Ak-Sar-Ben. County

Fair Ear tags will cost $1.00, EID Tags for State

Fair and Ak-Sar-Ben will cost $3.00 and DNA

samples will be $6.00. Payment will be expected

during weigh-in. Market beef ID sheets and DNA

samples are due to the office April 1.

Horse Level Testing

To show your horse at the Madison

County Fair, you must pass your Level I

advancement test. This can be done at

any time of year.

Now is a great time to start working on

that first level or the next level before

this year's show season. Contact the

office to set up a time.

TO COMPETE AT DISTRICTS, YOU MUST

COMPLETE LEVEL II ADVANCEMENT TEST,

INCLUDING SKILLS AND WRITTEN TEST!

4-H District Horse Shows...

Note: All level testing must be completed by April

28 for State and District entries. ID forms and entries

are due to the Extension Office by May 13. District

packet will be sent to all age eligible 4-H members in

early April.

4-H Horse Stampede

Mark your calendars!! The 4-H Horse Stampede has

been scheduled for Saturday, March 12. Entries are

due to the county office by February 12.
