Introduction
Hello and welcome to the 5-a-day School Games, the world’s largest primary school fitness competition. Following the success of the London 2012 Olympics and Government initiatives to raise levels of individual fitness and increase participation in team competition within primary schools, we’ve launched the all-new 5-a-day Pentathlon. By following our easy-to-use guide your pupils will be able to track their personal fitness progress throughout the year, and within their class, compete as a team against other classes in schools locally, nationally and internationally.
The activities included in the 5-a-day Pentathlon are multi-skill based, and if practiced regularly will help improve various components of fitness such as balance, coordination, speed, and agility. There is a minimum amount of equipment required, and one class in a school hall or outdoors can easily complete all the activities within a 50-minute lesson. The competition has three rounds - Bronze, Silver and Gold - which can be spread throughout the school year (i.e. once a term). The events in each round are identical, enabling each pupil accurately to track their individual progress and improvement.
Competition and fitness are key Government priorities for 2012/2013 with a drive for all young people to take part in inclusive competitive team sport with a focus on personal achievement rather than simply being ”the best”.
Use the 5-a-day School Games to make 2012 a year when your class can achieve their potential.
Participation in the 5-a-day School Games will:
Encourage healthy competition Encourage peer group support and teamwork Encourage pupils to celebrate the success of others Improve individual pupil fitness Track team and individual pupil progress throughout the school year Provide opportunities for AfL Provide cross-curricular links between physical activity, ICT and Maths Compare your school’s overall results with those of schools around the world

Health and Safety
It is important that your class understands each event and can perform it safely. When taking part in the 5-a-day Pentathlon please ensure the activity space is suitable for each event. Carry out a risk assessment if required. Ensure each pupil has enough space to move freely without risking injury to themselves or others. Please ensure that clothing, especially footwear, is suitable for movement. Please also ecure any loose items and remove jewellery. If a pupil experiences any discomfort during physical activity it is recommended they stop immediately. Any pupils with medical conditions are advised to seek medical advice from their doctor before participating in physical activity. NB: Please ensure pupils have access to drinking water before and after physical activity.
Preparation
The 5-a-day Pentathlon is designed to be run in a ‘circuit’ style lesson with pupils divided evenly between five Event Stations, rotating around the events after when all pupils at each station have completed the task. It is advised that all equipment be set up as described before the start of the session. Please ensure there is enough space for each activity to take place without interfering with other events.Print the five Event Posters from this guide and display them clearly at each corresponding station (you may wish to enlarge to A3 size). Explain each event clearly to the whole class before starting the session, giving a brief demonstration of each event in turn. Divide the class evenly between each station, and instruct pupils to line up next to the Event Poster and await their turn. Each pupil performs each event in turn for 60 seconds exactly. Signal the start and end of each one-minute period with the blowing of a whistle (use stopwatch for accurate timing). When pupils are waiting for their turn they should assist in keeping score for the other members of their group and observe good sporting practice, encouraging and supporting their peers. On completion of each event pupils should record their score on their individual My Results score sheet. (Photocopy the My Results sheet, page 19 of this document, enough for one per pupil.) Once all pupils at each station have completed the event, signal for the groups to move on to the next station. At each station allow pupils approximately two minutes to read the instruction posters and familiarise themselves with the event before commencing the activity. Repeat this process until all pupils have participated in all five events.
If space permits you may wish to run two events simultaneously at each Event Station. This will reduce the total event time by half but do ensure you have access to double the amount of equipment (40 beanbags, 40 tennis balls, 10 cones/markers etc.) before attempting this.

Warm Up
Before physical activity it is important to warm up and prepare the body for exercise to reduce the risk of injury. We recommend the whole class perform the All sports routine from the 5-a-day Fitness Channel of 5-a-day TV. An alternative routine may be substituted if preferred. This can be done in the classroom if screen facilities are not available in the hall. Every pupil that takes part in the 5-a-day warm up receives 50 points, which they should enter onto their My Results sheet.

Event 1: Throw it!
Equipment:
1 hoop1 bucket or boxAs many beanbags as possible, but at least 20Sticky tape or rubber markerTape measure (for setup only)
Setup Instructions:
Place a line of sticky tape or a rubber marker on the floor as a start line, and place a hoop exactly 3 meters in front (measure from nearest edge of hoop). Then place the bucket exactly 3 metres behind the start line. Place all beanbags into bucket (as shown below and on Event Poster 1).
Event Instructions:
The pupil stands on the start line, runs to the bucket, takes one beanbag only and returns with it to start line. The pupil then attempts to throw the beanbag into the hoop before returning to the bucket to collect another beanbag. This is then repeated. Score 1 point for each beanbag that lands inside the hoop within the 60 seconds. Pupils waiting their turn should encourage their teammates to achieve their best, and may assist in counting the number of successful throws. Pupils should record their own score on their My Results sheet.

Setup Instructions:
Place a sticky-tape line or rubber marker on the floor as a start line. Place one bucket at the start line and the other exactly 4 metres away from it. Place the cones at one metre intervals between the buckets. Place all items in the bucket furthest from the start line (as shown below and on Event Poster 2).
Event Instructions:
The pupil should start at the start line marker, next to empty bucket. They will then run to the opposite bucket, weaving between cones, and pick up one item only. They should then return to start line, again weaving between cones, and place the object into the bucket next to the start line. This is then repeated. Score one point for each object in the start line bucket at the end of the 60 seconds. Other pupils in the group waiting their turn should encourage their teammates to achieve their best, and may assist in counting the number of collected items whilst waiting their turn. Pupils should record their own score on their My Results sheet.

Event 3: Balance it!
Equipment:
1 beanbag
Setup Instructions:
1 beanbag to be placed in event area away from any obstructions. (As shown below and in Event Poster 3).
Event Instruction:
The pupil should balance one beanbag on their head. They should aim to squat down to touch the floor with both hands and then return to a fully upright position, with their hands above their head, as many times as possible within 60 seconds, without the beanbag falling. Pupils must not hold the beanbag with their hands.Pupils waiting their turn should encourage their teammates to achieve their best, and may assist in counting how many times they touch the floor. If the beanbag falls, the pupil can pick it up, replace it on their head and carry on. It is not necessary to start counting again from zero if the beanbag falls, simply replace and carry on. One point is scored every time the floor is touched with the beanbag balanced on the head within the 60 seconds. Pupils should record their own score on their My Results sheet.

Entering the data to our online Database
Now you have completed all the events, it’s time to return to the classroom and enter the results into our online database. Before pupils can enter their personal event scores into the database you will need to add your class name to your school’s data page and enter some initial pupil data, i.e. name, year group, and sex of each pupil.
Adding your class
Step 1: Go to www.5-a-day.tv and log in in using your usual school username and password.Step 2: Click on the School Games Channel. This will display your school’s current ranking in the 5-a-day Pentathlon. (Don’t worry if no data is showing just yet, you’ll need to enter your results first.)Step 3: Click the yellow Enter Class Data tab on the right of the screen.Step 4: Click on the Select Class drop-down button and click Add A New Class. (If you have previously entered class data then your class name will appear in this drop-down menu. Simply select your class name on subsequent visits to access your class data; there is no need to re-enter your class name.)Step 5: Enter class name and number of pupils, then click Add Class.
Entering Initial Pupil Data
You will now see an empty table into which you can enter the name, sex, and year group of each pupil in your class. International users should refer to the year group chart below to ensure consistency of data between countries.
You can either use your mouse or the TAB key on your computer keyboard to move between columns. The up and down arrows on your keyboard can also be used to make selections in the sex and year group columns. Don’t worry if you make a mistake, all the data can be edited and corrected later if need be. Should you wish to add another pupil at any time simply click Add Another Pupil at the bottom of the page. Should you wish to delete a pupil simply click Delete in the actions column. Once you have completed the table click Save. You will see a message confirming that you have created a new class data sheet. Click on the word Page to begin entering your pupils’ scores.
Page 105-a-day Pentathlon – Teacher Guide © 5-a-day Fitness Ltd 2012
Entering Pupils’ Results
You will now see a table listing your pupil names and year group, and showing the titles of each event. If this is the first round your class have completed, click on the word Bronze to make sure it is highlighted in a light blue colour. Invite pupils one at a time to enter their scores from their My Score Sheet into the appropriate event boxes next to their names. Remember, all pupils score 50 points for successfully completing a 5-a-day routine for the warm up. Make sure the Enter key or TAB key is pressed after each number is entered. This will auto save the entry. Pressing the TAB key will automatically move the cursor to the next box. If data is entered incorrectly simply click on the relevant box and re-enter the correct data. All data is automatically saved when Enter or TAB is pressed. It is not necessary to complete data entry in one single session; data will be saved automatically enabling you to return at a later time to complete it. Should you need to edit pupil names or add additional pupils simply click Edit Class. Then click Edit next to the pupil you wish to amend. Once the pupil’s details have been amended click Save and then Done. Clicking View Class will return you to the data entry page.
Viewing your class results
Once every pupil in your class has entered their results, click View As A Graph. This will display the Pupil vs. Pupil graph. Your school name will be displayed at the top of the screen and your class name will appear in the Select Class drop-down button. This graph shows the pupil’s total score (scores from each individual event added together) alongside the results of the rest of the rest of their class. Use the scroll bar at the bottom of the graph to view all pupil data. If this is the first round (i.e. Bronze) only Bronze bars will show. Once data has been entered for subsequent rounds Silver and Gold bars will also be displayed next to the Bronze to allow pupils to clearly track their progress throughout the year. You can also view the results of other classes in your school by selecting them fromthe Select Class drop-down button. NB: Some internet browsers may require you topress the Refresh Key when changing between class/graph views.
Page 115-a-day Pentathlon – Teacher Guide © 5-a-day Fitness Ltd 2012
Viewing your Inter-Class results
Click the Class vs. Class tab next to the Pupil vs. Pupil tab to view how your class’s results compare with the results of other competing classes in your school. This graph shows the average score of each class. This average is the total score of each pupil in the class divided by the number of pupils in that class.
Viewing Inter-School results
Clicking the School vs. School tab will show each year group in your school compared with the international average score for that year group. It will also show the international ranking of each year group in your school. Please note, due to the number of schools taking part in this competition this table is only updated at 8am, midday and 8pm each day (GMT).
Silver and Gold Rounds
We recommend that the three rounds of the 5-a-day Pentathlon be spread evenly throughout the school year (one round per term). To complete the Silver and Gold rounds simply repeat all the events as before, with pupils filling in their scores once again into their My Results sheets (you may like to keep these in a safe place in the classroom between rounds), and then entering their data online. There is no need to re-enter any initial class or pupil data, simply click on the yellow Enter Class Data tab and select your class from the Select Class drop down button. Then select the appropriate round (ensuring it is highlighted in light blue) before entering the data into the table.
Enjoy It!
Your school is now part of the biggest primary inter-school fitness competition in the world. We do hope you enjoy taking part in the 5-a-day Pentathlon.
Have fun and get fit!
