Message from Potentate Ill. Sir Alvin Billings >>Hi Nobles and Families!
I hope all of our nobility, family, and friends are free and safe from the COVID-19 that has been rampant in our lives.
What a year so far! We roared into January with a great installation and ball. We had close to three hundred in attendance, with great guests, a great band, great food in our great Temple. A few surprises from my family that is very close to my heart. Thank you to all that attended and supported this installation. A special moment was dancing with Ellie Long, one of our Shriner kids and 2017 Shrine Bowl Queen. Our January meeting featured Paul Finelli, Development Director for Shriners Hospital in Greenville, who gave a very informative presentation. February featured Illustrious Sir Donald Slaughter and Lady Lisa presenting the 2019 Amran awards. Congratulations to all who were honored. I was very honored to receive the Shrine-Mason of the year award. Thank you Illustrious Sir Donald.
In March we were thrust into the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. Meeting and event cancellations, postponements, our lives disrupted. The caregivers, first responders, truck drivers, and other essential support personnel were called upon to go beyond their normal

January started out with a boom. We had a very nice and successful installation with about 300 Ladies and Nobles along with dignitaries from about North Carolina. We are busy getting down to business and your Divan is hard at work. The Temple is running good.
Now we have this Corona Virus is giving us set back and deaths within the United States. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families who have lost loved ones and also to those who are sick. Just remember together we can get through this and please be safe and listen to our leaders in how we all can stay safe. Your Divan and members are working hard and we look forward to getting together soon.

(“He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak." ~ Isaiah 40:29) Our daily routines are now built around each other instead of what has beckoned us in the past. Our families are what will keep us together to defeat this pandemic. Social distancing is the new normal. Practice it faith fully and wash your hands.
I had a conversation with Lady Laura Teague, who gave me a history lesson. Back in 1918, the Spanish flu (H1N1) was raging all over the world. The United States was engaged in World War I (in which my grandfather fought) and the world itself I imagine was like what we are facing now. The numbers were staggering. Much more than we are facing present day. With all our communication outlets, can you imagine the fear and confusion without them? Think about what communication was back in 1918. The Pandemic lasted two years and led right into the 1920’s. One hundred years ago! And yet…look at what came during the aftermath. How many people at the time would have predicted during the war/pandemic/recession/depression years that the 1920s would be one of the most innovative, prosperous periods our country had ever seen? The 1920s ushered in the automobile, the airplane, the radio, the assembly line, the refrigerator, electric razor, washing machine, jukebox, television, flappers, and more. We all pray that great times get back very soon.
The Divan and I meet via video conference every week to take care of temple business. While we are physically closed, the operations of the temple continue. We all are concerned with the well-being of all our Amran family. We are here to help, support, pray, and share a laugh. We have had one informal video temple meeting and we are scheduling another very soon. Please join us. We are putting out the email blast every Sunday and doing a phone tree often. Let us know if you are not receiving either of these. Communication is our key ingredient.
I was asked the other day about the year so far. It must be tough to be Potentate in 2020. It’s actually very gratifying to have the support of this great nobility with whom I serve, care for, and love. The Divan and I
are very honored to work for you. Cancelling a meeting, postponing an event, is all part of our lives today. We will meet again, share a laugh, a meal, and have a drink or three. Practicing those three great tenets of Masonry in which all of us as Shriners have been taught; Brotherly love, relief, and truth, and in conjunction with those three great virtues; faith, hope, and charity will enable us all to live in harmony. . We will meet again soon! And when we do, we will have a hootenanny of epic proportions! Remember to always call on us if you need assistance. God bless and keep you. 143 Alvin
