Rutgers Food Innovation Center – First Food Business Incubation Facilityto Use AiroCide PPT Air Sanitation Technology

KES Science and Technology, Inc. announces that the RutgersFood Innovation Center (FIC) w ill be the f irst food businessincubator program in the country to include the NASA-developed AiroCide PPT air sanitation technology for use in itsfacility. The center w ill celebrate the grand opening of its23,000 sq. f t. food business incubator facility on October 17,2008, w hich is located in Bridgeton, NJ in the midst of the state’s food processing andagricultural industry.

The mission of the FIC is to show case food-processing innovation and to provide opportunitiesfor processors to benefit f rom the full spectrum of capabilities that exist at its USDA and FDAinspected food incubator. Because airborne cross-contamination poses a threat to food safety,the chemical-free AiroCide system, w hich kills airborne mold, fungi, bacteria and viruses, asw ell as removes volatile organic compounds (VOC’s), provides added protection to enhancequality assurance in the food processing environment.

Lou Cooperhouse, Director of the Rutgers Food Innovation Center, said, “As w e developedplans for our new food business incubation facility, w e w anted to implement best practices inall aspects of our operation. It is w ell-recognized in industry that minimizing the potential forairborne contamination is an important component of an effective food safety program, as thiscan minimize the potential incidence of product contamination by pathogens. Furthermore, theminimization of airborne microorganisms w ill generally result in an extension of raw materialshelf life, and result in improvements in quality and a reduction in food w aste. We are extremelypleased to partner w ith KES, and grateful for the generous donation of this equipment, w hichw e w ill be pleased to demonstrate to our clients.” The AiroCide system is installed in themicrobiology and chemistry labs, the test kitchen, food-processing rooms, and in the perishablefood storage areas of the Rutgers FIC facility. The AiroCide technology is not a f ilter and compliments results of f iltration systems likeHEPA/MERV. The patented technology, integrated w ith Photocatalytic Oxidation (PCO), w ork inunison to destroy harmful airborne microbes and dismantle volatile organic compounds (VOC).Clinical studies show a six-log kill rate for microbials and up to 99% removal for VOC’s.

The AiroCide PPT system is used in the perishable foods and beverages industries that includeretail (grocery and f loral), distribution (produce and floral), food and beverage and analyticallaboratories (tissue culture and food processing).
