PS/nVision enables you to retrieve information from your PeopleSoft
database into a Microsoft Excel spreadseet!not merely as "ra#" data$ but as

report instance or a report layout& report instance contains data tat PS/nVision
as retrieved from your PeopleSoft database& *t is te end result of using
PS/nVision& Every report you can create is based on a report layout& -en you run
a report$ PS/nVision uses te specified layout to determine #at data to retrieve forte report and o# to display it& erefore$ creating a PS/nVision report is a tree!
step process1& 3irst$ someone must define a report layout tat specifies #at 4uery to use for
te report and o# to format te report& e report layout is really ,ust an
Excel spreadseet& 5o#ever$ it doesn+t include any actual PeopleSoft data6 it+s
,ust te structure of te report!4uery information$ criteria$ text$ formulas$
grapics$ formatting$ or oter information you #ant to include& is step is only
re4uired te first time you create te report!once te layout as been saved$
you can use te same layout repeatedly&
2& Someone must also create a report re4uest specifying te layout and options for
te report&
7& fter defining a report layout and re4uest$ you run te report re4uest$ using te
nVision menu in Microsoft Excel$ te un button on te re4uest dialog box$ or a
button/macro tat calls PS/nVision to run te report& 'ou can produce multipleinstances of te report as needed& 3or example$ you migt provide an income
statement report for eac department #itin your organi(ation& Eac instance
is an individual report #it up!to!te!minute data from your database$ selected
and formatted according to te instructions in te report layout&
e layout and re4uest are all you need to run your report!creating a spreadseet
ric #it data& s te report runs$ a copy of te layout$ called an instance$ is

te basis for all reports produced from it$ you can format and enance te report

using ledgers #it PS/nVision and ta%ing advantage of te imeSpan feature to
define reports tat "roll" from period to period #itout any canges to te layout&
.sing imeSpans$ te same layout can retrieve year!to!date data based on te "as

Tabular and 6atri/ 5ayouts
PS/nVision offers t#o %inds of report layouts!tabular layouts and matrix
layouts& e ma,or difference bet#een tem is o# tey specify #at data to
retrieve from te database& *n general$ tabular layouts lend temselves to detailed
reporting$ #ile matrix layouts are more appropriate for summari(ed reporting& *n
tis capter$ #e+ll provide a brief discussion ere of bot layout types&
Tabular layouts are te simpler of te t#o layout types& ey use a 4uery defined
in PeopleSoft :uery to retrieve data& e columns in te report correspond to te
fields returned by te 4uery6 te ro#s in te report correspond to te ro#s in te
4uery result set&
6atri/ layouts ave data selection criteria associated #it columns and ro#s in
te spreadseet$ creating a criteria matrix& e data retrieved for an individual cellis determined by a combination of te criteria for its column and its ro#& ;i%e
tabular layouts$ a matrix layout can use a 4uery defined in PeopleSoft :uery to
